Changing weapon particle effects?

Greetings all,

How do you change visual particle effects of energy and projectile weapons for X2? Are these effects stored in a 'standalone' file by themselves or are they 'embedded' into a 3d object or part of a ship?

To be more specific, I want to replace the slow blue spheres of the mass driver gun with my own graphics. I'm very familiar with 2d and 3d art and formats, but scripting and programming do my head in. Regardless, any shove in the right direction would be appreciated.

Well, actually they are a 'body', i.e. a model. But the effects are control by the file TEffects.pck. For futher information on this file, get the GFX Modding Docu from ES home page.
