X2 Sound Files

Post by bobthemanofsteel »

Hey, I was just wondering if its possible to find the sound files for X2... That is, gun noises, Computer chick messages. I assume there is as some of the mods (ie Topgun) seem to have modified sounds. Any help?

Well in the Option menu, I believe you can stop the onboard computer to speak!

I didn't do it, because it's like a candy shop without candy!!!

Yep the sounds are changeable and they are in the 01.cat&dat files in the X2 game directory. You have to extract the files from those cat&dat and note the file names of the sounds you want to change and then make some replacement sounds with the same file names and pack them into a mod correctly. My first mod was a sound replacement mod, all sounds are measured by the game engine down to the millisecond so your replacements have to be the exact same length in milliseconds for most sounds and especially gunfire sounds. If the length is not right, the gunfire sounds won't be synchronized with the fire rate of the guns and it won't sound right.

I used nero wave editor and nero soundtraxx to make my replacements since they support millisecond measurements.
