[X3] Headquarter location [Bala Gi]
Just completed the bala gi missions and got the headquarter kit and got a couple of questions before i place it.
1) Are there any special considerations I should take into account when deciding where to put it? really have no idea atm where to put it.
2) can other factories be connected to the headquarter? i.e factories etc so the production is directly added to the headquarter.

Whatever you do you need to remember you have to supply jumpdrives and all software from external sources, you can't re-engineer those.
If you're not going to build a supply complex to stock it then for you need to find an area with the supplies at hand, if you are going to build a supply complex then you'll only need to find a sector with silicon and ore, but will still need to get the jumpdrives, fight software.
I put mine in the Unknown sector east of Patriarch's Retreat with the supply complex next door, I'm using the CAG software to train its pilots on the HQ > supply complex run so I can swap them onto other station/factories to sell goods, the plot ore mine makes max profit with a jumpdrive equipped CAG.

And an EQ dock for the software upgrades. You cannot fit them yourself.Only thing i can think of is proximity to jumpdrives.
Personally I like to keep my unique and irreplacable station safe - so I also try to find a sector at the end of the line (one gate, so no through traffic of pirates or Xenon) and full of heavily armed ships belonging to a race that like me.

Does a commodity logistics trader use a jumpdrive to get around?
Also, has anyone ever actually lost a PHQ? I'd guess they have at least as much shields as a shipyard, they those are nearly indestructible. So I'm thinking the thread issue is probably moot, unless you go sticking it in a Xenon or Kha'ak sector or something.

Kha'ak invasion could be bad, I don't know. They invaded Company Pride early in my game and have been there ever since, yet there's still stations there that the Kha'ak apparently don't feel like destroying. Maybe they would always destroy player stations, not sure. No experience with that yet. Supplying ships would definately be a different matter, though.

I was wondering about this too. I'm doing the Kha'ak Invader start position, so I was thinking of finding a Kha'ak sector and putting it down there. They seem to like me and seem to have the firepower to murder anything in the known universe. Of course, being the Kha'ak invader I have a lot of work to do before I can even get the Bala Gi missions

Put it in Trantor like I did
next to jump drives, got silicon and a little ore, but khaak and pirates are always welcome (at least in my game). It will prove to be fun I believe, fending off attacks, hopefully I can get some carriers and destroyers before I get a Khaak invasion spawn with M1s and M2s on my face, the GOD engine still has its little suprises

Is Elysium of Light just too obvious?
JD's are just too easy with the goner "Argon station" in sector. There's only 1 gate. There's PLENTY of space.. Omicron Lyrae is just around the corner; So is PTNI and Grand Exchange, Interworlds and Cardinals Domain. Yeah, you get some Xenon through Omicron that take out a couple of Transporters on the rare occasion. On my game I have a Khaak destroyer flitting about in Grand Exchange that I cant be bothered to get rid of ... I like my enemies where I can find them.

I've just gotten to this point in the game, too. A couple of locations I'm thinking about:
- Rhy's Desire. There's high-yield Silicon and Ore asteroids close to each other, and everyone but the Argon has a shipyard & equipment dock within 3 jumps. There's lots of through-traffic though.
- Avarice. Not the best choice objectively (close to pirates, lots of through-traffic, no resources in the sector), but it's the only sector I own. Subjectively, I want to put my HQ on my own land (vacuum?) It does have good access to shipyards/equipment docks, though.
- Ore Belt. Plenty of Ore/Silicon here, obviously. Also easy access to Terracorp, Goner temple and Argon/Paranid shipyards. Downsides are that the in-sector Pirate base might be a problem (or not), it's pretty busy traffic-wise, and the location is a little far from the frontier.
- Unknown sector (20,5) next to Z'rt's Domination. No Silicon, but lots of Ore here, and Z'rt's Domination has you covered for cheap energy cells. The location is a little remote, and close to the Xenon. There's only one gate though, so it's easier to defend.

- Unknown sector (16,0) next to Xenon Sector 534. Good Ore and Silicon asteroids, and only one gate. Unfortunately, that one gate leads through a Xenon sector. They will work as effective door-men against the non-jumpdrive equipped riff-raff, though. With jumpdrives, you've also got easy access to equipment docks from all four races in Getsu Fune. I spoiler tagged this one because it's the only one on my list that you can't just trip across. Without a map, you'll have to work to find it.

I also placed mine in the sector by patriarch's keep.
Close enough to get resources, except jumpdrives. Elysium of Light is a clever one for that, as would anywhere near CBSW.
However, for me I also like to do things in X3 with an element of 'roleplaying' in mind. IE, I don't want MY HQ in someone else's sector.
I also like the split and their ships/highland clan type ways, and I have complexes in cho's defeat.
This fits with an overall plan I have to strengthen the split by placing all my fleet equipping factories around this area, whilst having my 'own' sector, which will also feature a bliss place (got) and a space fuel distillery to supply my pilots/employees (and me!)
I don't care if these are the best locations (eg I struggle to sell the wares from my 25mj shield complex, wheras the 1mj complex has never built up more than 20 in stock, even though it has 2 1mj facories in it), but they are perfect for the 'story' I want to build.
I find this helps me an awful lot, as making your own story keeps you motivated and on track, where this game is so massive that sometimes you can lose focus for ages.
Really got to try and get the hang of using commercial agents though...they sound great but mine never do anything. I like the idea of using my HQ to train them though. I've just been using the station manager command.
PS, I know in my heart there isn't one, but can I buy a Jumpdrive producing factory anywhere in the game? Its so annoying you can't keep a stock of upgrades, the thought of having to ship them all indiviually is bringing me out in a sweat!

Buy an Elephant (or if you are really rich a Raptor!) and fill it with Discoverers or some other cheapy ship. Get each a jump drive and then load them into the carrier. You can then transfer the drive from them to the other ship (dock ship with carrier, give it the carrier's JD, then transfer a JD from a docked ship to the carrier and undock the other ship - stop when you only have one ship with JD left!). You can then jump the Carrier with all its now JD-less ships back to the Temple to pick up a new load! Elephant holds 14 at a time, the Raptor 62. Not the best solution but saves quite so much flying about! Its so annoying you can't keep a stock of upgrades, the thought of having to ship them all indiviually is bringing me out in a sweat!

Cheers. I didn't know you could fit m5's with jumpdrives, are Disco's the exception or could I use any m5?
I guess I will do that in the future, but at the moment my HQ is simply eating all my profitssss, so it may take me a while to save up for one to use just for that!
Still, that said, If I have an effectively 'dead' resupply elephant, then I could stock those discos and the ship itself with ALL the relevant kit for equipping a fleet.
I may get an Orca for that purpose instead, 10 fighters is still plenty for equipping other ships, plus a bigger hold to use it as an oos station builder too.
Hmm.
Actually, other than money there would be no reason to limit myself to disco's either...A capship fleet doesn't need JD's anyway.
Thanks man, my sweat problem is greatly reduced.
Gotta love these forums...it was them what convinced me to actually buy this game, one of the best £10 I have ever spent.
EDIT:
Although it just occured that your solution won't work so well for TS's, which is more what I had in mind, although I have these ST's training near CBSW and EofL for just that reason...
Is it possible to transfer freight between to remote ships OOS? the transporter command won't let you transfer jumpdrives, but if you can do it at a station, which I haven't worked out how to do, that would actually solve my problem.
Advice appreciated,
thanking you in advance.
