Request for Galaxy Map Modification

Post by Pogi »

I have a request...Could it be possible that one of you mod gurus could make a Galaxy Map Mod. :?: ..A 06.dat and 06.cat that would include a very large rectangular area that would show up on the in-game galaxy map. This would help map makers like myself a great deal when making their new maps to have the ability to have their new sectors show up in-game. It is easy enough to write the t file up and descriptions, but it is no fun doing so if the effort ends up in "hidden sectors" on the galaxy map. I really think this is needed and applaud those that have "included" galaxy map modifications in their released mods. It also needs to be for the "main" folder, not the "mods" folder, so other mods can be used...Thanks

P.S..It does not have to include gates, just the blank galaxy

galaxy

Post by Harlock776 »

I think it was galaxy613 and deadlyda that did a lot of work modding the x2 universe. It is possible but I still haven't gotten around to learning how to do it yet lol. I tried importing the universe bod file into 3dsmax after I decompressed it with doubleshadow's converter but it failed to import at the last few seconds.

If I'm not wrong Pogi is just talking about the old new systems not showing up in the in game map problem.

If so you need cut\ 00749.txt like in my ERH_MWM_Redux, note that I removed all system names from my mod map, so if you want to see the names in the map you will need to get the original.

Problem: I don't remember where I got the original from :o

Yes..The new systems not showing up on the map is the problem..DeadlyDa made a galaxy map for his mod that showed all his new sectors on the map (don't know what the work load on that was though)..What I am looking for is a .cat .dat that works the same way as the "No Modified Tag" .cat .dat from the "main" directory (not the mod directory). This would allow the use of other mods in the game. Large rectangle area..Blank sector names in non-Egosoft original sectors..No gates..This would allow map makers to put in their own gates and name their sectors via a "t" file to what they wanted....Just a wish list.

ok just 2 try and help abit

i am currently investigating, (meaning trying 2 get time 2 do it) making the full 300 sectors for x2 but have them all empty so that i can add stuff in with the ingame map eitor which i find for some reason the only way i can edit the maps. but i cant get the program i have to make the sectors apear in the universe map to work. so if someone can get me a program that does that and works, then i can make 300 sectors with nothing in them, so then map makers can make maps to their little hearts conent. Heck maybe ill try to get a map 2 work 4 once (im only a lowly scripter, not a ship builder or map maker)

I hope i can/could be of service to you,
thank you and................... good night

@E.R.Hyland..Did you use the Massive War Mod map in your mod?..If so you probably got that text file from it..I can get the files out of those mods with StoneD, but have never been able to get something put back into a .dat and .cat format that will work in the game (I'm no modder)..The Massive War Mod had "hidden sectors" too..That is what I am trying to avoid. I have no problem with the original Egosoft sectors showing up on the map..I just want the rest of the available sectors to show as blank so I can "t" file them a name and gate them on a map. I PM'ed Deadly for some help on this..His workload is pretty heavy into X3 now though, so I don't know if he would have time for something like this..Frankly, if it was easy, it probably already would have been done.

@Blazer..if you can get the job done it would be a great help to us map maker.. :)

@Pogi. I use DoubleShadow's X2 ModManager to deal with .cat files. The program sets itself up as the default for opening them so it winds up being as simple as double-clicking a .cat file, and dragging files in and out. Works like a charm every time. It even deals with compressing/decompressing .pck files.

@blazer1121. The two programs I know of off the top of my head for external editing/creation of the universe, other than notepad  , are DoubleShadows Galaxy Editor, and XeHonk's Galaxy Editor. DoubleShadows is much newer, but I haven't used it much so I can't really comment on how well/easy it works. XeHonk's is pretty old, but I can say I recently used it to edit the nebulae before I started a new game recently, and it seemed to do the trick.

Edit: posted the wrong link to XeHonk's Editor

@baubsmyth..Thanks..I have all those programs and I use DoubleShadow all the time in making maps..I also use the X2 mod manager along with StoneD to rip files out of mods..The problem is the Galaxy Map..You can not edit the Galaxy Map (that I know of) with Double Shadows tools. Heck I don't even know which file the in game galaxy map is located in.

So you are using DoubleShadows ModManager, and you are having troubles putting files back into the .cat files? Or are you saying you can get the files back into the .cat, but can't get them to actually work in the game? I thought you were saying you couldn't get the files into the .cat in the first place. As far as the galaxy map goes, it's the last file listed in the "02.cat" file. I haven't been able to edit it with DoubleShadow's editor and got it to work either, though I admittedly haven't tried very hard. I can say I edited that exact file with XeHonk's editor to remove the hull eating nebulae from the game, tossed it back into the .cat, and it worked beautifully. Sorry for the confusion.

Oh I can get the files back in alright..but, when I try and load the game after re-packing..It goes right back to desktop..lol I'm doing something very wrong I know, just can't figure out what it is. I have a ton of mods on my computer that I would love to rip certain pieces out of each and compile into my own mod....Down-loaded Gmax the other day, determined I was going to learn to make my own ship of some kind...Opened the program and for hours I felt like a 1st grader in an Algebra or Trig class..lol..So that is out. :) If I could just figure out how to put bits and pieces of different mods into one package I would be happy with that; there is tons of ship graphics etc. out there all-ready made by some great graphic designers. I've got the map making and t file figured out and have made about 20 different maps over the last few weeks..I'm ready for learning the next step..Making my own mod using existing ship graphics etc...I think..lol

Ok, we're on the same page now. I've had the same luck with DoubleShadow's Editor. Whenever I use it, the repack the x2_universe file, I CTD when loading the game. Haven't had a minute to search for a reason/fix. Like I said before, I was able to edit/repack the x2_universe file using XeHonks Editor, and it worked fine for me. I'd give XeHonk's a whirl Pogi, I linked it a couple posts back.

Ok I think the 00749.txt in my mod came from Galaxy613 it is just a flat 300 sectors. think it is the BOD Map link.

And no it's not part of the MWM.

As for packing, and unpacking cat./dat.'s I like the X2archiverv1.02 by mzach I got it from BabyFace's sight which is down.

http://members.shaw.ca/BabyFaceX2/default.htm Not working.

You need the X2 ModManager for some mods, but I don't trust it.

btw..I still can not get to your mod file at shadowtech site..have never been able to get there with Opera or Explorer

sites

Technically it's www.*** so try that and see if it helps and you can get X2Archiver from doubleshadow's site in the downloads section. I use X2Archiver exclusively since it has always worked for me and I could never get mod manager to work out.

@baubsmyth..Thanks that will help too..I think I'm going to start with a map though that already has some gates in it..Makes the work load a lot easier :) ..Has anyone ever done a full 300 gated universe yet? I'm thinking of spending some time doing one..Mostly just astroid filled uknown sectors for the explorers and miners out there. (with maybe a few suprises here and there.

Ahhhh, adding hundreds of gates to a full 300 sector universe is the perfect activity when your sipping caffeine, letting the gears of your brain slowly grind into place in the morning! :D

Anyway, here they are:

Full blank universe without gates

Full blank universe with gates
