Filesize problems and the net (need advice)

Post by Winter Dragon »

Hi everyone,

Well my year has come to an end and my final short film 'thing'.. has finished. So, I want to share this with anyone who is interested but how!!

I'm really stuck for ideas...

The filesize is about 200mb compressed with audio, and I don't think the net is possible for this filesize..

I've tried quicktime, mpeg1 and div-x and they all end up ~150-200mb..

What can I do? Post it out to everyone? It'll cost me a fortune :(

This is a REAL pain. I wish there were a way to solve this frustration:

Clip length: ~4-5 minutes
Audio: .wav 48KHz uncompressed
Video: 720x405

That's the original settings, but I've tried compressing to:

400x300 Quicktime and that ends up at 285Mb
400x300 Div-x (5.02 codec) ... it looks crap!! lights are all fuzzy and text is terrible)

200Mb for 5 minutes of video? No way is that getting compressed properly. For example, 5 minutes of typical size MPEG-1 would weigh in at around 44Mb (this would be resolution 384x288, admittedly). I've also seen extremely good results from the Sorensen codec supplied with QuickTime 3 and later, but I think you have to buy the "full" codec in order to compress video--the one which ships with QuickTime will only decompress.

Frankly, you may be setting your sights too high in terms of quality--there's always a tradeoff between file size and quality, and I think you're probably erring too much on the quality side of the equation.

use a prog called TMPGENC and encode it as a SVCD mpg or VCD mpg, the filesie should be pretty much as paul sais, I estimate around 10 meg per minute.

Yeah the thing is anything less than 400x300 simply doesn't do my clip justice. Even 400x300 is questionable because there's a lot of detail.

I have the Sorenson codec but I don't think it's the full version. 385mb for a 400x300 (with audio) seems too big.

I'll try this mpeg stuff again and see what I get. I use TMPEG :)

I know there's a tradeoff to filesize vs quality, but I didn't think it'd be this high. Thanks anyway for your ideaz ;)

Try lowering the audio quality to around 22,050.

try a program called IUVRC
its a very very comfy thing
it supports almost everything that has to do with compressing and codecs
i got very good quality divx5.02 slef made clips and movies with about 12-15 MB/min
