X-tension in WinXP Pro

Post by falstar »

I am unable to run X-tension Gold on my WinXP Pro system even after the 1.4-2.1 update patch. The whole system freezes after the movie. While the movie is playing, the audio frequently skips. What do I do? I haven't played in years, but wanted to prepare for X2 when it ships.

X2 runs on Xp fine. XT is best run in "compatability" mode. Right click the icon and select.

This should be better :-)

If it doesn't work, post again.

I found I didn't need the compatibility mode on. Which begs the question:

I presume that X2 won't have any issues with XP Pro/Home?

I have XP Pro sp1 on a 1.8 GHz P4, 512 Meg, 64Meg GForce4 MX440, SBLive. X-T still just locks up after the movie. Any suggestions to get X-Gold working?

I assume you've patched it up to version 2.1a?

I've re-installed winXP sp1 and X-T to 2.1a and now even the movie locks up when the voice starts. My understanding is that all the directx drivers and such are included in sp1 so they are not to be installed, am I correct? What am I missing?

Hi,

I've heard of this before and IIRC its to do with Windows media player. I am afraid I don't know the answer, but maybe someone else will read this and remember. Any 3rd party media players installed? Just a thought.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

If you have any other media players installed apart from MS then try checking the file associations to make sure that ALL media files are associated with the MS player. Is this problem unique to XT or are other games suffering as well?

Possible fix

Post by -Skylark- »

Hi. What is probably going on is that the version of Windows Media Player in WinXP (7.1 I think) is unable to perform certain actions required by X-Gold. For speech, the game uses .mp3 format, but WMP 7.1 and greater can't break into the files at different points. When the game asks for speech, WMP 7.1 must process the entire file, which causes the game to perform crazily.

There is only one fix:

1. Find where X-BTF or X-T is installed.

2. Go into the subdirectory "mov" and find the files "00144.dat" and "00244.dat".

3. Rename them "00144.mp3" and "00244.mp3" respectively.

4. Use a program capable of audio conversion (I prefer CDex, it's freeware) to convert them into .wav format (Warning! "00144.mp3" will inflate to nearly 1 GB!)

5. Now rename them back to their ".dat" extension.

See if this fixes your problem.

The .wav conversion thingy definitly works, but I thought that the 2.1a patch took care of the sound problem.

I'm not using the .wav format anymore anyway.

That didn't work. It took DEex a long time to convert the first file. I wonder if I had the wrong settings.

Hmmm...

flastar, the 00144.dat file does indeed take a while to convert, since the file becomes so big. You should at least get speech after you did it... if you did it right.

Scarecrow, I don't think that patch would fix it, both because others have reported the same problems with or without the 2.1a patch, and because the problem is not in the game, but in WMP itself (and by extension, the WinXP OS).
