I printed my copy today and it looks great without using an entire toner cartridge (I don't agree that whomever designed the updated docs with a colored background should be sacked, but I do question their forethought).

It looks to me like the updated manual is publically available (you don't have to be logged in/registered to get it). Is it okay for me to make this printer-friendly updated manual available for download?
Well, I got an answer from Terrabyte by way of The_Abyss... Sadly, the answer was no:

The updated manual is only available to users who have registered a copy of X³, so it is not publicly available and it is not acceptable for anyone else to host any version of it

Ah well! At least it's not too difficult to make your own copy printer-friendly.

I think the point that is being missed is that we sould NOT have to print our own copy of a manual we should of had to begin with.

So, they have to individuall send us all out a new printed version each time they poke about a bit? A little out of anyone's costs. And if you have followed what has been going on behind the scenes, mebbe you'll understand.

I agree that it's inconvenient to have to print our own manuals, but having a 'printer-friendly' replacement manual is a nice step in the right direction. I wish they'd distribute it instead of each person having to do it themselves, but ah well.

I'm not sure what you're hinting at 'behing the scenes', nNemethon. Can you explain?

Hi, Peter -

Check here for information..

http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=13767

Good luck!

** BTW - the key-count so far has reached 108 commands - with five on the "t" alone... this could rise to 110 depending on the validity of the two oddities mentioned above..

Hi,
I am quite frustrated with the pdf manual myself, and feel that one shouldn't have to go to the trouble to fix it. It should be simple enough for egosoft to edit the source document and re-post a printable manual.

I sent a note to egosoft on January 3 about this and have yet to receive a reply. I have a question:

a) Am I dreaming to expect a reply from Egosoft support?

Hi Rianur, don't expect much of anything in the way of getting a printed manual. I too wrote Enlight, before the PDF was released. Heres the response:

Dear Customer,

Thank you for your email, and sorry for the problem casued. With regards to your question, regret to say, the manual is incorrect. This is because there are lots of changes as the coding progresses. Sorry for the inconvenience caused.

The developer Egosoft is now aware of this issue. And they are taking steps to resolve it. For more and other information regarding this, please visit: http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=106885 etc.

Kind Regards,

Enlight Tech Team

Subject:S Question:X3 manual

My manual has a lot of misinformation in it. According to the Egosoft forums, all US manuals are this way. They are putting together a PDF version for download. My concern is that I paid for a hard copy and received an invalid one. Are you planning on releasing a hard copy of the manual for people who have paid for one? The PDF is unacceptable since I would have to print it myself using my printer, my paper and my ink. Egosoft claims you printed the wrong copy. Just wondering how this issue will be resolved.

Sounded like a form letter response to me.

Ya, I stopped holding my breath, waiting for the simplest of replys from the company.

I'm not really expecting a new manual to be shipped out, though that would be nice. What I don't understand is that the company seems so reticent just to re-post a pdf version without that awful, ink-depleting background image. The folks who already paid for the manual will be out of pocket to print their own from the pdf, but it will be much less painful if the pdf was printable. _sigh_

Well I pm'd a member and unfortunately couldn't get a copy sent to me. Took the plunge and downloaded a PDF editor trial (30 days). Can't remember which one but link is in the thread somewhere.

2 hours later I now have a full manual with no background. Very easy if you follow steps in this thread. Basically two step process, select all text and change to black (have to do this a few times on a lot of the pages as the text is broken into multiple segments) and lastly select background and delete. Make sure ALL text has been changed before you delete background.

The program was a little buggy and kept bombing out a number of times so make sure you save as new document often.

Happy chappy and I also now have the ability to modify document for any missing information (add, modify & delete).

cheers

How about you give us some examples so that we can tell you whether there is still an error or whether you have, for example, simply not go the relevant equipment installed?

The download is available and the link is working fine. Perhaps you tried before you had registered your game, or maybe you just forgot to enable cookies for this site.

Nope thought of that so tried again today still get the "this page is unavailble" Don't have this problem on any other site and my cookies are set so that they are all allowed.

Any chance of someone e-mailing to me I am on broadband so there would be no problem with the size of the message :)

I just checked it yet again and it works fine. Are you sure your security settings are not set too high and, for example, blocking PDF file downloads? Have you tried right clicking on the final Download button and choosing Save?
