My system cost just over £1400
Its a custom build and it was a Xmas present to myself
I did have a single BFG 7800GTX OC 512meg but it was faulty and couldnt get a replacement for 14 days so went with 2 256meg.
I have bought shop machines and specials from factories(not mentioning any names(rhymes with Bell and also one the came in a box that looked like a cow))
And all those systems cost the same or more than my custom build.
Few teething problems but most where to do with the graphics card being faulty.
Other than that would recommend building your own sytem(as long as you do your homework and review all the specs for the things you want. I.E.The A8N SLI Premium that I bought only accepts certain memory)

Ati drivers are 5.12
First minimum settings, driver set to max performance.
And then maxed settings, driver set to max quality.

Ok this sucks...
I just ordered the game a few days ago over the internet (still waiting for it to arrive) and I just noticed this demo thing.
I just did it and... well... my FPS is really unacceptable for playing - I must really have to love this game a lot to have to put up with playing it this low.
I have a Geforce FX 5600, and I heard some of you in this thread already said that it's crap, but I don't have any other choice. I can't go get a new graphics card because they're not exactly something you can just get like that cheaply for a single game. I don't have any problems with other games.
Here's my results:
I've already put Rivatuner to 1.1 on the pixel and vertex shaders. I already closed all my programs. My hard drive is defragged. There isn't any viruses or spyware or any other crap like that. My drivers are fine.
Is there any way I'm going to play this game at a better FPS than that?
Thanks for the assistance. I won't be happy if I'm going to get stuck playing the game like this. I wouldn't have ordered it if this demo was brought to my attention (thanks Egosoft

Not to bad for the PC, and this isn't the settings I play it on in-game.
I'm overall happy with these results. (I dunno if this is version 1.2... although me thinks it has to be v1.3!?)
____________
The more detailed stuff about my PC:
AMD Sempron(tm) 2800+
MSI Nforce2 Motherboard (don't know much more than that)
512Mb RAM (want more)
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (overclocked slightly with ATItool)

Your getting a great framerate for that outdated x700 but i bet you your X3 cant compete (in overall lovieliness) with a machine running next to it using pixel shader 3.0. (if your card supported it).giskard wrote:Graphic card name and driver used: HIGHTECH RADEON X700 Version [6.14.10.6587]

There's really no reason to complain here. Everyone agrees that while X3 may not be the best optimized game out there, it still offers the best eye candy out of nearly every game on the market today.Vannus wrote:I have a Geforce FX 5600, and I heard some of you in this thread already said that it's crap, but I don't have any other choice. And if you want to play a next gen game, DO expect terrible performance on 4 year old hardware.
You said that all other game run fine for you.
I can't believe that's true. What do you get in FEAR benchmark? 10fps also?

1) Try dropping the resolution. IIRC I play at 1024 x 768. Although this may actually prove worse if your monitor's native resolution is 1280x1024.Vannus wrote:Ok this sucks...

2) It looks very much like the Graphics Card is the bottleneck on your rig (though you don't say how much RAM you have) so you COULD try overclocking it. I used to have a 5700LE which overclocked enormously. Be warned, though, as this could fry your graphics card or worse. If you want to overclock, you need to download the coolbits utility/registry update for nvidia cards. Ask for advice from other 5600 owners and oc by small steps.
3) Look on ebay / t'interweb. A 6200/6600 can be had for surprisingly little these days (though obviously they are now fairly out of date).
TBH, I suspect the only way you are going to get a playable game is by option 3 with a 6600 or 6600GT, and even then your RAM might make it unplayable.

The reason that some portraits don't look true to life is that some people make no effort to resemble their pictures

I don't have the game yet - It's released here in Poland around Ferbruary (grrr...) and I won't buy it on like amazon.co.uk because the official release here wil cost less than 18 bucks. Compared to 35$ + shipping gives quite a difference. To all of you who have the game - Does the performance in-game is similar to the demo? How much FPS will I get in game on average situations and on "low FPS situations" like lots of ships flying around and fighting, whatever.

ive downloaded the rolling demo for x3, and after running it im left scratching me head
the reason for this, well after running the demo as a benchmark it gave me an average framerate of - 8.4, i ran the demo with the same settings as i normally run the game, shaders at 1.3, no aa etc etc and i got 8.4, now i get a good frame rate when running the game, gets a little choppy in orebelt (i have a roid issue) but when i run the game and have fraps running i get an average frame rate of 23.81 ?
strange but true, doesnt matter really as i get a playable game, i just wondered why there was such a difference between the demo benchmark and what i normally get ? i made sure i had the settings on what i would have them for playing the game ?
still like i said doesnt really matter, but i did like the demo, and i do love the graphics in x3, i liked them in x2, but x3 looks so much better.

Vannus - It's quite strange for me that you have such low framerates. I don't have much better PC but mine 22.3 with everything High (No AA nor AF though) shows that your rig really should be getting better framerates. At least 20FPS average on low! Update drivers, Disable antivirus software (disconnect from the internet first). How much RAM do you have? From what I can see 1Gig is a must.
EDIT: Just run the benchmark at same settings as you did (except for the resolution, my monitor is 1024 native) and got 40FPS. I just don't elieve that you get 4 times less!!! Well, unless you have 512MB ram only, that would solve the mistery.

Benchmarks are designed to put strain on the best of systems. The X3 benchmark has a lot of things on screen most of the time. Especially in scene 2, you will probably never have that many capital ships on screen within such proximity while playing your normal game. Even though the benchmark doesnt have the added burdon of managing the processes of 150+ sectors in the background at the same time. Its quite stressful, it may even be the equivilent of giving birth.Pickle-snr wrote:ive downloaded the rolling demo for x3, and after running it im left scratching me headthe reason for this, well after running the demo as a benchmark it gave me an average framerate of - 8.4, i ran the demo with the same settings as i normally run the game, shaders at 1.3, no aa etc etc and i got 8.4, now i get a good frame rate when running the game, gets a little choppy in orebelt (i have a roid issue) but when i run the game and have fraps running i get an average frame rate of 23.81 ?

Thanks for the recommendations Tea Boy and LLothar.
I'm not entirely sure of the reason either, I would have expected at least a bit more than that as well.
I've got 1GB of RAM, so there shouldn't be any problems there either? I just checked Task Manager and the demo didn't seem to go over 300mb, and with what little else is running, that doesn't go near the limit.
Tea Boy, I'd like to be able to overclock my stuff, but with my luck I'm practically guaranteed to blow it up. I'd rather play like it is than risk it, but thanks for the suggestion.
There's only two other things that may possibly be doing it. I've noticed a lot of people say that onboard sound will make it a lot worse, but I've also heard people with onboard sound who have no problems. I've got nForce 2, but surely that wouldn't make it this bad, would it? Maybe there's a way of disabling my sound and see the difference?
The other thing I can think of is the codecs issue. Because it's the demo, I obviously can't try this one out (at least I don't think I can?). I have hell of a lot of codec installations to get everything I want running, so it's VERY likely it's using the wrong ones. I'm just not sure if the codecs themselves cause lower performance, or just the crashes. Maybe both?
Thanks! Hope to hear of your opinion. I really hope it's not my onboard sound that is making it this bad - I quite doubt it.
