The convoy - 20

Captain’s log;
Earth Stardate 2938 - 4th October
USC Independence

--
That was one problem down the drain. Next up was Ryuk. I might have been too hard on the guy but he did have it coming. Blowing up surrendering ships wasn’t my idea of showing good faith. I might had been able to board the ‘Magnetar’, adding another ship to our fleet. That would have been a wonderful ship for that Cpt. Forrester and his crew. For now I’d have to worry about settling the little communications error between me and Ryuk.

The ‘Independence’ once again undocked from the trading station and flew back to the NNMC Headquarters whence she came. I reckoned it wasn’t going to be easy. I’ve already asked much of Haris and his crew, and I was about to ask them to endure even more of my secrets and commands. It’s true that I had been more honest with them about my plans regarding the Nividium, however I didn’t really have the feeling I fooled Ryuk completely. Time to ask some questions, yet again.

“Haris? Can I come in?”

“What do you want?”

“We need to talk. I’ve been a bit harsh on you.”

“Fine, come in, but keep it short. I’ve got things to do.”

“No offense or anything, but what could -you- be doing? Last time I checked you were waiting for the transport ship for an escort back.”

“I’m the captain of this ship. I need to keep the crew happy and informed. Make sure the ship runs fine. You know..”

“That’s what first officers are for. Just relax for a bit.”

“Prefer to do things myself, really. It’s not that I don’t trust others with those tasks though, but I guess I just want to be in control.”

“Understandable, though you really can’t do everything yourself. It’s good to take a little break once in a while. Though I’m not here to lecture you on that right now.”

“What –are- you going to lecture me on then?”

“I wasn’t planning to lecture you on anything. I do want to tell you that I was hoping to show some good faith to the Argon military by letting those ships go back to their base of operations. Sure there are risks with that option. They could rat us out, get a bigger fleet, tell them of our tactical manoeuvres. Though I don’t think they’d dare to attack again unless they had a major fleet. They know we’d be backed up by the Terran main fleets which happen to be quite close to Omicron Lyrae. That place could fall into our hands within a day should they make a move that bold.”

“You’ve seen what they are capable of! They already tried to block our paths. They opened fire on us. They… they had to pay for what they did!”

“Easy, easy. I’m not here to judge you for that decision. It was made a bit hasty perhaps, but I won’t hold you accountable for it.”

“Y..you won’t?”

“No, I won’t. We need to get on good terms with each other if we’re going to want to get through this all. As soon as our supplies are through and our Nividium research lab has been set up I’m going to work on getting our relations on good terms again with the Argon. We can’t trade close to their space with them on bad terms, plus they are not our real enemies.”

“They are -my- enemies! They exiled me and wanted to scrap the ship, and what for? Just because we failed our mission!”

“I completely understand that you think they are the enemy, however we have a more pressing concern. That of the Xenon to be more precise.”

“Xenon, sir? What are they up to now?”

“Oh, just as you know they have stepped up the rate of their incursions into populated space. They have recently even invaded our Solar System. We found out that some Split faction was manufacturing A.G.I. ships as well, which are essentially Xenon too. All in all, that threat is one we can’t ignore, and can’t let grow.”

“And what does that have to do with us, sir?”

“Nothing at all. I just wanted you to know that the Argon are not our enemies, and we need to keep them friendly. We can’t risk all out war between the Terran and Argon people. The Xenon would see seize that chance and stage an invasion.”

“I guess you are right there. I’ll have to suppress the urge to pull the trigger.”

“You will get a chance to put your life on the line soon enough, Haris, don’t you worry about that. We do still have to get back through Argon territory with the Teladi freighter. The NNMC did promise us some escorts from their fleet as well, so I don’t expect the Argon being bold enough to attack us. However we must be prepared for the worst.”

“We will be ready, sir. Was there anything else?”

“Actually, yes. Last we talked I didn’t quite get the impression you believed my explanation of our research project?”

“To be honest, sir, an advanced mining ship being stranded doesn’t sound very realistic.”

“What if I showed you it? Would that take away your suspicion?”

“It depends on what I get to see. If it’s just some battered up old mining ship I ain’t buying it.”

“It’s far from that, trust me. We will discuss the details once we get back. There’s one thing I have to ask before I leave.”

“What would that be?”

“Have you any idea where or how to acquire a military transport ship? Or possibly another corvette? I might have found us a crew willing to man such a ship, if we can find one.”

“I’d have to think on that one. Nothing I can say from the top of my head.”

“We still have some time before I expect an answer back from them. I’d just like to know our options, rather than spending the credits we earn on an expensive ship for a crew I do not know.”

“Sounds tricky indeed. I’ll see if I can find or salvage a rickety old ship for them somewhere.”

“You do that, Captain. I will leave you to your work for now and contact you if we’re ready to depart.”

“Very well, Commander. I’ll ask around.”

If I ever don’t see myself leading battles anymore I might just get a post as councillor aboard a ship somewhere. Seems I can talk to people better than I expected. Most of the times I get to hear that I am very blunt, but so far most talks have gone very smooth. I guess these times ask for special measures. All that was left for now was to wait for the transport ship from the NNMC and the journey back.

5th October - 1130 hours

--
The ‘Albatross’ large transport ship arrived a little early, though it wasn’t such a big problem. Ryuk and Branski were ready not much later allowing us to leave the relatively safe Teladi space. We would soon see what our squeaky clean so called Argon friends were up to this time. I really hoped for their sake that they would not try to mess with us this time, seeing as the Teladi were particularly picky about this shipment. They send three ‘Shrike’ class frigates along to accompany us, together with five new ‘Osprey’ corvettes and some ‘Falcon’ fighters to close some defensive gaps. I guess they took our reports on the Argon rather serious after all.

It wasn’t before 1300 hours that we were all underway. One of the ‘Ospreys’ was having some engine trouble. A quick reboot of it’s computers was all it took to get it underway again, making haste to catch up on the time we had already lost. The gate was in sight, it was going to be a matter of minutes now before we’d be able to spot any possible Argon forces awaiting our return.

Turns out it was false hope. Nothing showed on our gravidar. ‘Nyana’s Hideout’ was as empty as the first time we passed through. A few freelance traders was all we encountered on our way to Omicron Lyrae, where the real trouble would be most likely.

Two of the ‘Osprey’ corvettes went on ahead to scout out any possible blockades, but they reported nothing of the kind. The way was clear for us to pass through. Had they given up? That was rather hard to believe, especially after the trouble they had given us before. However we couldn’t stop looking out for signs of trouble. An ambush could be anywhere, however it was quite possible that the sight of our NNMC escort kept the Argon at bay.

Our delay was quickly diminished and the journey went on without any opposition. Grand Exchange was in sight about three hours later. There was still no sign of any Argon military ships. I must admit it was getting on my nerves. What if they had mustered a fleet and made their way to the sector the Narada was located in? There was always a chance that they had overwhelmed the Terran fleet that was guarding the ship. Nonsense I told myself. My first officer would have tried to contact me at the first signs of trouble. Unless they had somehow blocked our communications. No, impossible! The transmitters on the Narada were much more advanced, and the Independence was equipped with a transmitter of the same kind. There would be no way they could block the signals they send.

Again it turns out that also those fears were ungrounded. The Terran ‘Yokohama’ fleet was still in position upon reaching US 19,9. As part of the deal the Teladi crew aboard the ‘Albatross’ was transported to one of their escort ships while some of the Terran pilots and crewmen boarded the transporter. The Teladi weren’t allowed in this now Terran Military sector. No one was, aside of the Terrans themselves. We had gotten surprisingly much support from the Terran government regarding the establishing of a defensive perimeter and a plausible cover-up story. Something we all were very grateful for.
As promised I took Ryuk with me as well. He would be able to catch a glimpse of the Narada from the bridge of the transporter. If that won’t take away his suspicions I’m out of options. I can’t let him board the ship, obviously. A look at the outer structure would have to do, for now.

The plan was to get in a reasonable range of the Narada and deploy the empty husk there. It would give Haris the chance he’d need to see the ship plus it would shorten the supply runs we’d have to make between the ship and the station later on. Chief Saxton had already found a nice location, below the ecliptic plane, under and slightly behind the asteroids we were hiding in. This would prevent people from seeing the facility upon entering the system through the gate but would still place it close to the Narada. A win-win situation you’d think.

Getting the station in the right position however was a nightmare. The asteroids were packed too tight to manoeuvre the bulky ‘Albatross’ through directly, and ejecting the station kit from the cargo bay could make it crash into one of the ‘roids just as easy. After some quality piloting from Harmon Rabb we got the transport ship in position to deploy the station. All went fine until one of the pipes had a small collision with the surface of an asteroid. Apparently the pressure we used to push the construction kit out of the cargo hold was a bit too much. No serious damage was sustained as the impact was at minimal velocity. The thrusters on the station had done their job to properly bring the station to a halt, aside of that minor scratch on the paint.

During this tense hour, all Captain Ryuk did was look out of the windows, observing what fractions of the Narada he could see in between the Asteroids. If I didn’t know any better I’d say he was buying it, however I did know Haris, and he always had to ask questions.

“So, that’s the ship huh? Can we get a better view? I can only see some glimpses from up here.”

“Yes, that is the ship. We will fly the ship to the front of the asteroid field again once the station is deployed. Be patient! We’re already doing you a great favour by even letting you into this sector.”

“Fine, if you say so. What’s so special about this ship anyway?”

“Like I said, it uses advanced sensors and has a special hull plating that is more resistant to impacts with rocks that get blown away by a mining laser.”

“Is that it? Hardly worth hiding if you ask me.”

“That hull plating can easily be adapted to be almost immune to missiles and ammo-based weaponry. We even had a few tests in our labs where we polarised small parts of that material, it completely reflected any energy weapon fired at it. Though there is no way you could fit a generator aboard a ship that would be powerful enough to polarise the entire hull at the same time. That is why we’re keeping this a secret, and I trust you do -too-, Haris.”

“I.. had no idea the Terran people were so advanced, Ryker. Not even the Argon military knows this.”

“We’re good at hiding secrets, plus we’ve been separated for many, many years. I am afraid I cannot tell you more regarding all the facilities we have set up in our solar system. I do hope you understand the importance of keeping your mouth shut though.”

“You will hear nothing from me, sir. This does give me a reason to protect your assets. I must say that I find it hard to believe that the Terran military uses this technology for a mining ship rather than a war fleet, as the Argon military would do should they get their hands on it.”

“Firstly, it’s extremely costly. Secondly, the material is hard to come by and we have no way to create enough to build a second ship. Thirdly, the experiments in the lab were conditioned and on small pieces. As I said before, to make it resistant to weapons fire we’d need one hell of a power source, which on it’s turn would increase the size of the ship, which would require a bigger power generator, which would increase the size of the ship again. You get my point.”

“I think I do understand. Though it begs the question why you’d use what little you have of the material to make such a huge mining ship out of it, instead of a powerful flagship..”

“Like I said, the material itself is harder than any material we use for our hulls on regular ships. This makes it good for absorbing minor asteroid impacts, however it’s not suited to absorb the energy from weapons, plus that we haven’t found an effective way to raise a powerful shield around the ship. The material is interfering with our generators. However I am exposing way to much classified information. No more questions!”

“Fine.. I get the point. Thanks for willing to share that information though. You have convinced me.”

“Already? There I was thinking it was going to be hard to get you to make up your mind about this all. I’m glad nevertheless that this issue is solved. As promised though, we’re coming close to the front of the asteroid field. Go get a few more sights before we leave again.”

“Will do, sir!”

The station was set up and all the required materials have been transported onboard. The engineering crews would soon be able to start installing the equipment so we can get ready to refine Nividium. Haris was convinced that we really were going to mine Nividium for research and the Argon military had been surprisingly quiet. All in all a good way to end this log.

It took a while, but here it is, chapter 20! 10k views before even 20 chapters being written (however there is a large amount of spam in this topic too ^^) is really nice ! :)

Next should be up in 2 or 3 days. Writing this wasn't easy, since I had lost track of the story for a bit. Took me a while to get back into the setting and style of writing, however I hope you enjoyed it.

All DiDs have been moved from the X-Universe to this forum. There was a threat in the X-Universe about why.

Has something to do with these 'Creative Universe' sub-fora being nearly dead. LV in particular found it a very good idea to move the stories/DiD's to this forum to bring it back to life. However quite a big concern is that this forum is not visited by people regularly so the stream of fresh people discovering your stories will be significantly smaller.

New people just see the 'X Universe' and they go and read things there. They might see the stories and find them interesting, however they'd never go and look at the 'Creative Universe' to search for things. Might even be thought of as lame :p everything has to be found in it's right context though so.. let's make the best of it. Let's not disappoint LV and resuscitate these boards back to their former glory!

Huzzah!

and now without further delay, no new update. Silly trains once again decided it was funny to stand still instead of moving, I only just got home. Barely in time to just get some dinner and go to bed xD (figuratively speaking of course).

However, the weekend should give me a considerable amount of time to write up a chapter or 3 :) Stay tuned!

I am a little behind with this thread.
Hopefully I will have the time to catch up on Sunday.
Been so busy lately and yesterday had to spend time as Dad for my near grown-up kids.

But keep the story coming.

ATM I only read this one and the Yaki Prince thread. And that one was quiet for a while too,so I need to catch up to that now too.

Mine is developing now.Day 28 report coming soon.

"Sir, may I come in?"
"Sure."
Navigation officer entered captain's quarters and closed the door behind him. Captain Ryuk was eating.
"What is that they brought us here?" He pointed at his plate. "These Terrans should taste some of that BoFu stuff. I bet they'll like it. I'd kill now for a Meatsteak."
"Well, I guess we're not in a position to complain, sir."
"You bet."
"If I may, sir, what have you seen back there?"
"Nothing special. A big... mining ship... of some sort. And if you ask me, it's all a big bag of crap they feed us here. I've seen enough in my life and for me, the least it looks like is a mining ship. I'm not an expert but I got a feeling they think we're complete idiots. Anyhow, I must not discuss it with anyone, if you get me."
"I understand, sir. It was just a mining ship... A big one. In any case, I have been listening to our secure channels and got a message intercepted. It looks like the 3rd Strike Fleet received orders to stand down for one reason or another."
"That's good. We can have some rest now at least, knowing they won't pop out from nowhere, blasting plasma into our tailpipes."
"Anything you need captain?"
"No. I'm good... Wait! Contact this Ryker, tell him we need to restock our food supplies. Tell him we'd like some BoFu... Damn..."

Whatever...

[Audio Log]
Hours come, hours go. I tried to fix the navigational system, but all I could achieve was to determine my relative position in the galaxy with the help of a star chart an my eyes, like sailors did in the early centuries of earth. It's funny, I don't remember who I am, but I remember what navigational techniques they had back then. Would be worse the other way around though.
I now know where I am, give or take some thousand light years. The map indicates, that theres only one known gate around this area, connected to Zyarth's dominion. That said, I'm still not able to find it and with mere 14m/s it'd take a while even if i knew. I'm sending distress calls on all frequencies and tried to get the gravidar range up to localize the gate. It's huge and the spacial distortion caused should be easy to find once I get in range. The downside is, I won't see anything smaller then a M1 on the scanner, even if it directly in front of me. but with 20m/s I've plenty of time to "dodge" on sight...

Argon economy - 21

Captain’s log;
Earth Stardate 2938 - 6th October
USC Independence

--
I am more and more starting to have the feeling Ryuk is a man with two faces. He is acting all sincere when in my presence, nodding and accepting what I say. Though I do not quite believe his sincerity all the time. I am letting him in on big secrets, albeit with a bit of a twisted background to it all. He should be grateful and accept it. It will probably best if we are not going to give Cpt. Ryuk much more privileges such as this for the oncoming weeks. He will still be our main defence once the Terran fleets fully retreat, though I must be completely certain he will actually defend us and not just turn around his ship and attack together with the Argon fleet. What if this has been one big charade? He was attacked by those pursuing Argon ships but it could have been a show. Thinking back to it, it didn’t seem like those Argon corvettes had the intention to actually destroy Ryuk. They fired but hit only non-critical parts of the ‘Star Glider’.

It is probably best to start working on restoring engine power to the Narada. Once that is established we will have to start worrying about new shields. Chief Saxton had informed me that he had already figured out a possible way to integrate Commonwealth shields with our generators. We’d be more susceptible to enemy fire, though it’s better than flying without shields. The next issue would be armaments. The weapon systems are completely fried with little chance of any repairs. I’m wondering if it is still worth keeping the ship intact as she is. We will most likely only have limited propulsion and limited shields. Most likely no weapons at all to defend ourselves. Not really the way a warship should be. Perhaps we can put our home to some other use. Food for thought for sure.

The original shields of the Narada were successfully uninstalled and shipped to our new station. Here they would be used to create many powerful miniature force fields to keep the matter and anti-matter separated. Those two extremes could then be fitted in improvised energy cells and transported back to the ship to reenergise the main reactor. The estimated time until we’d reach maximum power again was two weeks, if everything went according to plan of course. That time we’d use to set up some factories that would take care of our funds. We still had a dept to repay to the Teladi. It could cause us a lot of trouble if we didn’t repay them in time.

Meanwhile my officers and I have decided to show our good faith and start stimulating the Argon economy in the local sectors. Together with Dara I have scoured the maps for possible trade options. Upon closer inspection of the ‘Midnight Star’ sector Dara discovered there was an abundance of Energy Cells. We could utilize those E.Cells and use them to power an ‘Argon Wheat Farm’. The ‘Delaxian Wheat’ it would produce could be used to turn the raw meat from the cattle ranch into ‘Meatsteak Cahoonas’ at the local factory. This meant we could increase their food productivity and even use some of the food for our second station. We came up with setting up a trade in small shield modules. These One-Mega-Joule modules are being used in almost all scout ships and most civilian ships. Needless to say that there is always a huge demand for those modules. We can sell them to random passerby’s and any excess shields can be sold to the nearby Equipment dock in ‘Interworlds’. The only resource we’d lack was raw Ore, however there was a lot of that to be found in the nearby sectors. At least enough to maintain a good supply of the materials to create shields. This all would provide us with a steady income. The first earnings would of course be used to repay the NNMC, after which we can start earning credits for ourselves.

The only problem now was that we’d not yet established a name for ourselves, so the shipyards would be very wary to sell us factories. A kind message to the NNMC not much later got us the -Argon- factories we needed. They had purchased it for us and we had repaid the NNMC with a little interest. They had even thrown in two small ‘Vulture’ freighters to help me transport goods from and to our new factory. Of course, we’d have to pay those greedy green scales back for those ships too in the end, but it was a cheaper alternative to buying two more freighters.

Now you might be wondering why we let the NNMC purchase two Argon stations for us. The reason is simple. Argon personnel would work on that station, and they want to eat Argon food. If we’d purchase a Teladi station they would want to munch Teladi food. Seeing as we would be stimulating the local Argon food industries, the choice to pick Argon stations was not a hard one.

After the stations were delivered by that ‘Albatross’ we had our two freighters shipped to ‘Midnight Star’ where they rendezvoused with the ‘Vultures’. They got some credits to start out with and to buy supplies after which they were sent on their way.

It would be a while before the stations would start to make money for us to repay to the NNMC, but it was a start. We’d probably be able to set up a third factory within a day. The only problem would be the freighters. We’d have to come up with a way to share the resources between the two factories I guess. That would solve some issues. Though that was an issue for later. Right now I had the issue of getting a ship for Cpt. Forrester. He had replied last night telling us he didn’t have a ship of his own right now, though he could offer training to my crew. I do think I’d prefer him on a ship as that would be another corvette to fight with.

I do think however that working with Mercenaries is going to be dangerous. We must make sure that we have the most powerful ships at all time, else we can be easy targets for our own defence force. I think it is important that we firstly get our hands on a frigate class ship. That way we will always have the upper hand against our defending corvettes. I’ll probably have Dara looking at the perfect model for our needs. After that we can start saving up for the ship and the other necessities for it. It’s going to take a while, but until then we can not trust anyone.

All in all the Argon seemed to appreciate the gesture. The patrols were scanning our transports quite frequently and kept a close eye on us, but we weren’t doing anything illegal and they knew it too. It wasn’t long before I was contacted by a representative from Omicron Lyrae. He reported that our previous ‘issues’ have been picked up by the highest officials and that they were ordered to stand down the fleet to not provoke further political problems. They would appreciate it if we didn’t abuse this temporary cease-fire. In all truth though, what was there to abuse? We didn’t start this whole thing, neither had we any intentions to continue these silly quarrels. I told the kind man that we just wanted to get some more trading permits and help rebuild the Argon economy in this area of the Commonwealth. Maybe if we had enough credits repay the damage that was done to the Trading Station in Argon Prime, even though we had nothing to do with that tragic incident. If I could see the mans face I’d probably see a smile, however communications with live images weren’t used on long-range communications due to the limited transponders these ships and stations had. Not an issue for us though, as long as the Argon kept to their end of the bargain, else they might very well end up fighting a war with the Terran people. I trusted these stations in Argon space were safe from any threats, though I did station Ryuk and Branski in the sector to keep an eye on our assets. Ryuk quite obviously objected because he would be stationed in the middle of Argon space. They’d be an easy target, according to him. I did agree with him there but most Terran warships were outfitted with a Jumpdrive after the Aldrin ‘invasion’ so we could provide backup reasonably fast. At least fast enough for Ryuk not to get himself blown up. He gave up the argument there because he knew it was true. However I did promise him extra payment for the risk I was getting him in to. On top of that I gave him a little funding to purchase the supplies they thought would be needed. He could keep the change as well.

It all came down to waiting now for the credits to start flowing in. In the mean time I’d return to the Narada to keep a close eye on the NAM refinery together with Saxton. Captain Gibson was in command of the ‘Independence’ with orders to map the surrounding sectors in more detail to search for possible factory placement. In the case things would go wrong he’d be close to the ‘Star Glider’ and able to defend themselves from a minor assault, though I did not expect one at all. Somehow I trusted the Argons for now, unlike Ryuk.

update 1 / 2 for today. Needing a small break before continuing. Two stations are up and four more freighters were bought second-hand. This means I am completely broke now (6 mil down the drain - salvaging rockets really is profitable o.O). In the story I didn't mention the purchasing of the second-hand ships because it somehow didn't quite fit.

As for the 'NAM Refinery' I just took a Teladi Complex Hub and set it up close to the Narada. Before you go saying this isn't possible, I will tell you it is with the 'Factory Complex Constructor' script :)

Hiring an Albatross and getting it to US19,10 was annoying as hell though. Way too many pirates loitering around there already. I think I might need to go in for some cleaning up.

DS1CSTFHR...

Thank you Commander Ryuk...

"Commander, you have received a second chance. Contact awaits you at Interworlds system trading station. I hope you will take advantage of the opportunity and act wisely. Note, that in case you will cooperate your crimes against Argon Federation will be erased from our databases and your rank restored to you."

End of message.

"Navigation here. Yes captain?"
"Patch me through to Branski."
"Right away."
"Branski here."
"It's captain Ryuk speaking. I'm going to ask you a favor. I need you to lend me your fighter for a tazura or so. Let me reassure you your ship will not come to harm. In exchange you can enjoy the hospitality of my ship and comfort of the captain's quarters until I return. Think this over, but I need your answer in next stazura."
"Let me think this over. It's all of a sudden... I'll let you know."
"Navigation here."
"Stev, come see me."
"On it!"
...
"Captain?"
Haris Ryuk was writing something on a piece of paper. His pen scratched out two final words of the message:"...trust nobody."
"Yes, come in. Stev, I want you to take command of the 'Star Glider'."
"What's going on, sir?"
"We're in trouble. I will explain everything once I return. If I don't, give Ryker this letter and tell him... No, he'll understand everything on his own. I just hope this Branski will remember he owes me one..."
"I feel like that's not the way fantasy space travel works in the real fantasy universe."

One episode of Band of Brothers became two, and 200.000 credits pumped into the two stations became 10 million credits over the past few hours..
