I don’t see suicide as a rational act - unfortunately I have experience - if Fay was feeling totally rational she wouldn‘t have done it.
I have seen Fay on the slippery slope for a long time right from the beginning. Her mind just never integrated properly she was constantly battling against herself doubting questioning - for a host of reasons! The confrontation with FAITH was in her head just another part of the confrontation inside herself with herself!
Fay had no where to hide from this - no real peace of mind - just the distraction of her work, the excuse of her duty, plus attachments to people like Febr, and Tebbin! Plugged in her head transferred into the passive store was the memories of somebody she came to consider to be a comparative innocent - the Pirate whose body was stolen - so Faith could cheat death that was a constant rub as well!
The feeling of being soulless was always there - that a person is more than just a stream of downloaded data. The loss of Febr was a massive blow again something she felt responsible for, she even felt guilty about putting some people on the Incentive with good reason, Tebbins almost defection was a subtle knock as even this stalwart was questioning her policies. The Devil coming into the fold made that whole vendetta seem pointless and her past choice of out and out confrontation - suspect - even if she didn't want to trust his intent that feeling itself became questionable!
The loss of the Fortress was bad, but the idea that she would have to watch other Legion die (tell them they would die was harder) - even if they were criminals - they were Her Legion, Her Command.
Fay would hardly have batted an eyelid if any LotD had been used up in a battle wisely but this was personal! The real jibe was the fact that because she refused to accept FAITH, and because FAITH was Fay that made her doubly responsible - as if she had actually done these deeds in person!
Further she believed FAITH would just disappear (job done) as she realised if put into the situation of committing that unforgivable crime this was the sort of thing she would do!
If Fay had been feeling more rational she might have wondered why FAITH would risk taking out The Fortress in the first place or in such an obvious manner? Fay just couldn't figure anybody else could have done it, only FAITH had all the inside info Fay didn't know about Turs emergent ability with the AI.
By killing herself Fay believed she was culling the real person responsible for the crime not just running away! Fay believed she was guilty of the whole stinking mess, her suicide was an act of utter despair and self loathing! If Fay was a copy of the original faith - FAITH was a copy of Fay. I saw it a bit like a Captain who navigated poorly choosing rightly or wrongly to go down with the sinking ship.
Sadly I think she believed all her choices had become suspect that if she carried on anything she did would only make matters worse.
On the Revenge Issue absolutely nobody knows about Tur Ryn’s ability to interface with the Corealien style chip AI. The cousins know BANE exists as an upload but that is all.
If it gets out Tur Ryn is sure to be history even given his limitations that ability is too lethal to be tolerated. That is why he went after FAITH, and took out The Fortress - no more personality Downloads - who might discover the same talent.
Fay taking it all too personal was a strange twist of fate, and in a way more than the Devil had hoped for! As much as he was planning to kill Fay anyway for the same reasons as FAITH he would have liked to have done that one - more hands on - he actually respected Fay even though he had reason to hate her with a passion.
You know Tur would have been content to play by the rules of the Federations game within reason, if he hadn't gained that talent, and Arke hadn't blown up The Lander, and Faith been truly willing to tolerate him. However FAITH was plainly plotting from the onset. Tur was caught between the two Faiths. I see it that Tur was pushed, and Power corrupts!
Can’t say much about The Devils fate one way or the other without giving the end of the story away lol! Just realised most of my characters are kind of voyeurs they haven’t really shaped events that much at all - just been shunted along by them - or is that just my perception!
I’m very happy you care enough about the story to have opinions, and wishes as to how it might end! As it is coming towards a close I would like to thank everyone that had read along - especially those that have commented it helps to make it seem worthwhile!
EDIT sorry far too long winded!
