lastly if you are using an AGP card try looking in your bios under your "onboard devices tab" and make sure the AGP apature is set to 128 or more, a lot are set to 32 or 64, setting it to 128 can give gains in speed by simply allowing the agp more bandwith
Expected framerate increase:small 0-5fps
This isn't really true. You're not allowing more bandwidth, you're just changing the amount on physical memory that is shared with the card.

Have a look at this http://www.tweakguides.com/ATICAT_2.html I know it's about ATI drivers, but (there are general tweaking tips not specific to any drivers or games) have a look at the BIOS Settings section, then read the bit about AGP Aperture Size
This setting determines the allocation of physical RAM for use by your graphics card, should it become necessary.

i stand corrected, my bad, ive never has to use it myself (excuse :P )

for a more fuller explanation --

AGP Aperture Size: This setting determines the allocation of physical RAM for use by your graphics card, should it become necessary. A better description can be found in this AGP Aperture Size FAQ. To decide how big it should be keep in mind the following: (1) keep it above 32MB, as an Aperture Size below 32MB will disable AGP texturing - reducing your performance greatly in games; (2) the greater the amount of Video RAM on your graphics card, the smaller this setting should be; (3) Values between 64MB and 256MB show no real performance difference; and (4) Using larger values can result in more crashes such as General Protection Faults and potential texture corruption. So with all of these in mind, I recommend an Aperture Size of 128MB for most modern graphics cards. If you have an older 32MB graphics card, set the Aperture to 256MB. If you experience a large number of crashes or texture glitches, try lowering the Aperture to 64MB regardless of your Video RAM amount.

A tool that I have found very useful, but you use at your own peril, for those of us with ATi cards is AtiTool (Google it). I've managed to increase the clock speed of my Radeon 9550 by 44% and the memory by 10% with no problems. You have to install their unsigned version of the drivers to unlock the pipes but it effectively gives you a 9600. Unfortunately i bought the 256MB version which I now understand has slower memory than the 128MB version. Still the framerate seems to be better 1000% SETA is no longer so jerky so it must have improved. The overclocking can be assigned to a group of hotkeys so it can be switched on or off easily.

I went down this route because i kept failing in the

turrets mission on the planet

I have yet to go back to this as I have started the trader route and at the moment am not following the storyline, when I do I'll let you know if it's better.

There're two very good articles about video card driver tweaking here.

ATI Catalyst
nVidia Forceware

very good read. There're also a few other application related tweaking articles on that site. very interesting. Hope this helps.

You don't have to disable the sound completely, the following worked for me:

1: Using the Control Panel, use Add/Remove programs to uninstall Windows Media Player 10. You might have to check the show updates box at the top
2: Restart your computer
3: Again, go to the Add/Remove programs and uninstall the Windows Media Runtime files (I think this bit is right, can't check the official forums cos I'm at work)
4: Restart again, and hopefully this should cure *** choppy frame rate, and you can actually hear the dialogue.

The above worked a treat for me, I have an average machine Venice 3500, 1 GB RAM and a X800XL. The game is nice and smooth at 1280 x 1024.

Hope this helps
I copied this post from overclockers.co.uk forum. I shall try it to night and see if it solves the problem. I will be foooked if I am buying a sound card just for this game...!!!

If you have a dual core processor and a geforce card, upgrading to the 81.85 drivers will give you a massive boost in performance generally. If you don't have a dual core then you may not get any performance benefit over 77.72 drivers.

The biggest single thing to increase your frame rate is to turn off the post processing filter from the graphics options if you have a geforce 5xxx card.
I dont recall seeing this option, but Id like to find it.. in my case frame rate is not enough to have this game playable.. but Im anxiously waiting for a good tip like this and/or next patch.

Also, Id like to know if some of you think that a DDR (PC 2100) RAM may be a bottleneck instead of the fastest DDR (PC 3200).

Okay this is my final posting on the matter of fps, I have spent DAYS! configuring my system - often doing the same things several times over in different ways just to make sure I haven't missed anything. I have ironed the fps problems on MY computer to be down to two possible culprits : 1, Not enought ram on video card or 2, Need a faster CPU/front side bus speed.

I have tried all the different combinations of settings of my control panel and all the possible combinations of options in the graphic settings of the game. Firstly the most obvious pointer is that there is VERY little difference in game fps with the different graphic settings. A second indicator is that overclocking my video card also makes VERY little difference to fps. However the fps on the first menu screen when the program first loads up - DOES reflect, logically, higher fps when setting graphics options lower. However this change is not seen when playing the actual game. The fps shown on the first menu screen seems to me to be a good indication of how your video card is performing - without having any of the cpu pressures of when the game is running. So effectively - if the games use of my cpu was optimised - I would see higher frame rates by reducing the graphics settings - or overclocking my video card. Whats happening is that the frame rate is being limited by cpu processing, so increasing the speed of the graphics procesing with lower settings or overclocking the card only produces minor increases - it tends to effect the max fps when theres not much going on.

My system spec is in my sig. I have an ATI x700pro 128DDR3 overclocked to 450mhz core - 950mhz memory. I have found that I get the max fps for my system from the following settings:

Bios: AGP aperture 128mb, I've tried em all! On X2 it actually made the game have less and shorter stutters when I set this to 8mb!! But not so here: 128 and 256 seem very similar but on 256 I sometimes get some texture corruption. I would recommend having it on AT LEAST 128mb.
I also tweaked my memory timings. And slightly overclocked my cpu!

ATI Control Panel:
Catalyst Driver :6.14.10.6525 (as shown in display-adapter-properties-driver. Don't know what Catayst Version number this is - It says driver version: 8.12 on the installation disk) - I found this driver to be about 3/4 fps faster than the catalyst 5.10, or the 5.7 which I also tried)
Texture preference: ultra performance (although "quality" is almost identical)
MipMap preference: ultra performance
AA: Off
AF: Off
TRUFORM: Off
VSYNC: Off
Catalyst AI: Low
Geometry instancing: Off

X3 Graphics settings:
Textures: Low
SHaders: Low
AA: Off
AF: Off
AQC: ON
Post processing: Off

I also disable all external non-essential processes before running the game. Also it seemed to run slightly better installed on my C drive, probably because it has slightly faster access times! I also have my swap file (vritual memory) on another drive.

With these settings I get the following fps:

Argon Prime (at start of game): 10-22fps (10 when looking at all the stations and busy parts - up to 22 when looking at the gate or other non-busy scene)
Home of light - 15-26fps
First khak battle in Home of Light - about the same, but with occasional stuttering when it gets particularly hectic or when the first few explosions happen)

I never hit 30fps though - unless I deactivate the HUD - whoopie - up to 38fps! Quite often I deactivate just the monitor as that tends to give me a 4 or 5 fps boost.

So the game is just about playable for me after some serious tweaking and trouble shooting. There is definately something going on with the access of the videos of people your speaking to in the monitor in the top right, it doesnt change person on time and it is also very jerky. Also as has already been said the sector map seriously hits the fps.

ALthough the above settings give me the best fps on my system I actually run the game with shaders on medium and texture preference in the control panel on quality. I probably loose about 3fps but the whole game looks sooo much better. I LOVE the shader effect on medium - on low it makes the ships hard to see and you don't notice the detail so much. ALso the textures on "ultra performance" in the ATI control panel do look a bit ropey!

I hope this helps somebody, it will make me feel better for spending so much time just configuring a game!

8)
System SPEX: Athlon xp2400+ , 1 Gig DDR (333mhz), RADEON x700pro 128 DDR3 (clocked to 450mhz core, 950mhz mem with ATI tool) SIS K7S5A mobo (running at FSB 266), onboard AC97 sound (yuk!).

Hi folks, just wanted to post a quick, easy painless way of getting a little extra out of your system.

PCI Latency Tool 2
http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.ph ... 1#download

Right click on a device, choose change settings, then enter the Latency you wish to use. Use the guide below.

- Decrease the Host and PCI bridge (all of them) latencies to 0
- Set the sound card's latency to 0. You may also try increasing the latency (start with 64 and go all the way to 248).
- Decrease the latency for the video card. Start with 192 and go down until it gives the desired effect. (24 is ideal setting for Video Cards)
- set all other devices to 32 or 0.

Please note this will not work on PCI Express Video cards. So if you have one, you will be unable to set Latency on it. however, you still can adjust the Latency on other devices.

Also, be aware that the settings will take place when you click Settings > Apply

Make sure to do Settings > Save

And if you do not want to set the settings each time your system is restarted. Settings > Apply on Startup

I don't think anyone has mentioned this in the thread yet, so rather than post a new one like I was about to I'll just use this one.

I've done numerous tweaks, since my low memory (512MB) leaves my X3 performance to be desired. I've turned off explorer, shut off the internet, have no extraneous processes running in the background, and all of it has helped a little. Then I happened to set X3 to run in windowed mode while still connected to the internet because I wanted to check something in the bugs list without closing everything down.

What a difference! At the default resolution of 1024x768, which is what I run in fullscreen mode anyway, my FPS jumped considerably. I'd recommend anyone having problems tries running it in windowed mode. It may lose some of the immersion, but the performance gain was greater than anything else I've tried so far!

Who would have thought!

Yes, running in a window does help!!! :?

However, this only holds untill you do the following:

Open sector map.
Watch a battle involving 3 Pirate Busters, 8 Argon Buster and an Argon Titan.

But....at least it is playable for the most part! And that was with the HUD on!

Now, if they can just fix it so I can run it full screen...

Biggest gains: disabling onboard sound and turning HUD off

ranged from 16 (HUD on) to 31 (HUD off) FPS (with jerkiness) in Argon Prime with sound enabled in BIOS (AA 2X hardware setting, medium textures)

ranged from 22 (HUD on) to 46 (HUD off) FPS (much smoother) in Argon Prime with sound disabled in BIOS (AA 2X hardware setting, medium textures)

ACQ- on

Vidcard- fast writes and sideband addressing- on

Edit- Screen Res: 1280x1024

Also used a trick from X2.... starting the game with abovenormal priority.

Make a new txt document

type in: "start/ABOVENORMAL x3.exe"

edit (skipped a step) save the text file in the X3 installation directory. rename to [whatever].cmd and place a shortcut on the desktop. Click this shortcut to start the game.

Now this is damned peculiar....

I tried the same combinations of settings with the screen res at 1024x768 as I did at 1280x1024 and I get consistently better frame rates at the higher resolution.... everything else being equal, by 25-30% across the board.

Where the framerates were smooth at 1280x1024 they are jerky at 1024x768.

How odd :o

Not really, depending on the optimum resolution for your card.

That is odd, I always had the impression from Game tips that the higher the RES the harder the G.Card has to work.........huuuummmmm

Has it anything to do with screen refresh rate ..?

Been testing out settings on my wifes machine using different drivers, both Official and Non-Official, along with disabling some services as mentioned on this tread and shutting down explorer when playing the game, and the latency tweaks I posted in a previous post also on this thread.

I went by what actually felt smoother ingame and seemed to look and work best without as much screen lag.. I did not go by FPS. These settings worked best and smoother on her machine.

Her System:
AMD Athlon XP 1800+
1GB DDR PC-2100
eVGA nVidia GeForce 5900 SE 128MB
SB Live! 5.1 Gamer Series Sound Card

So far I have gotten best results using drivers from www.tweaksrus.com using the following settings.

With these Drivers:
Xtreme-G 78.03-HDv2
Xtreme-G 81.84.v2 (seemed a bit smoother than the 78.03)

BIOS
AGP Apterture: 256 (seems working better than 128)

X3 Settings:
EAX: Off
Screen Resolution: 1024x768x32
Texture Quality: High
Shader Quality: Medium
Window Mode: Yes, using Window Mode
Automatic Quality: On
Anisotropic Texture Filtering: Off

Video Card Hardware Control Panel and Monitor:
Refresh Rate: 85Hz (best look/clarity on her monitor)
AntiAliasing (AA): Uncheck Applications Controlled: Set to 4x
Anisotropic Filtering (AF): (Application Controlled) But in game settings off
Image Settings: Performance
Vertical Sync: Off (Uncheck Application Controlled)
Refresh Rate Override: 85Hz (Set to what works/looks best on her monitor)

Once Ingame:
Postprocessing Filter: Off

Drivers Download Page:
32bit Drivers
64bit Drivers

This might not help some people but since i upgraded my forceware drivers to 81.87(www.guru3d.com) the game has been a lot smoother to me. Also closing file sharing programs, antivirus, firewalls, and making the priority of x3.exe to High helped me. Im not saying im getting high fps, still around 15 in crowded areas, but its not stuttering all the time now.

Someone earlier in the thread mentioned setting your graphics card to Best Performance. This is certainly worth a try.

What is also worth a try is setting it to Optimal/Best Quality. You can usually do this by right-clicking your desktop, select Properties, click the Settings tab, click the Advanced button, and somewhere in there you should hopefully be able to change the 3D options.

After doing this and setting all X3's graphics options to high, it now runs smoothly on my system with only slight jerks every now and again when it loads something new into memory. And as you can see below, I have far from a brilliant system!

this may or may not help (depends on exact versions) but it's worth a try
A recent topic on cpu bottlenecks got me thinking, and yes indeed running in a window will help because recent drivers have been optimised for increasingly high DPI and Resoloution systems, therefore creating somewhat of a bottleneck..

Just try raising your desktop and game resoloution....

May soung like it would make things worse but for some people it might just beef up performance.

Unfortunatley changing the resolution to a higher resolution is only useful for those whose monitors can support higher resolutions. Mine can't! Since I have a nice TFT screen I don't intend spending another few hundred quid to buy another screen that can just to play this one game. I'd prefer it if I could try going the other way and run in 800x600 as I can in X2.

Speaking of which I wonder if you can force the game into a lower resolution? Any thoughts Egosoft?
