Like a lot of people here, I grew up with Frontier and Elite. I liked those games a lot and X-2 showed promise as 'the best thing like it'. It may turn out to be better than the next Elite if they make a real botched job of it (if it ever gets off the ground too!).

I love Space Sims... simple as that.

Yeah I played Elite but it had nothing to do with why I bought X2. I bought X2 because I was so happy with the time I spent on X I didn't think it could go wrong. And except for a few minor disappointments with X2 (but that comes with any game these days) I pleased with my purcahse.

I was not aware of X-Tension though... which somewhat annoys me... so I am looking around Canada at the moment for X and XT heh.

The Star Wars space sims were fantastic... the only Star Wars genre that had any major success (apart from the latest KOTOR... but thats BioWare for you :))

Once again. . . . Sinilar stost , slightly different path.

Elite on the spectrum , took some time out until I got a PC.

Privateer 2 , I-War, I-War 2, Then I upgraded to Win XP ! Oh Shit ! Look Ma , None of my old games will work properly anymore !!!!
Tried many many demos of things, none caught me until FreeLancer !

In the beginning I thought FreeLancer was it, the dogs danglys, but a few weeks in and its the same thing over and over again.

Bored.

Enter X2 !

End of story.

Some friends stuck XBTF in front of me coupla years ago, and i cudnt put it down. And as soon as i saw X2 i had to have it. And WOW, was the first thing i said. I must have spent a few hours wandering around alone looking at the graphics.

My intro to the genre was Privateer 2. Fell in love straight away, and I had to get more. Played the Wing Commanders 3 - 5, then discovered Elite and Frontier. Loved Elite and Frontier was OK. I needed more. Found XBTF and XTension at a dodgy Asian flee-market, and bought both. Imagine my disappointment when I discovered they weren't originals and couldn't be patched. I then ordered them on-line, and haven't looked back since. X-Tension was an instant favourite. Played Tachyon the Fringe and Freelancer while the long, painful wait for X2 was on, and they did not come close to X-Tension. Finally got X2, and would you believe it, I started a new job with heavy hours, and STILL haven't played it. It's a discipline thing. When I played the X games, that was all I did. No other games, hardly a social life, and I thought about them day in and day out. I know I'll do that with X2 as well, so I'm waiting for things to settle down at work before I install, lock the door, and DIG IN. I already know it will drop all the rest. At least I'll start with version 1.4.

I first played Elite Plus on my old MJN computer. We only just ('bout a year or two ago) bought a new one. That computer was almost as old as me! Therefore, I havent had much contact with the genre except in Elite Plus. Started playing this when it said "21st Century Elite" on the box.

In terms of games, I intro'd myself in with Descent first, then Freespace, Starlancer. Never played Freelancer, WingCom and never liked Star Wars. If there's a ship I like? Pyro-GX 1133 from D1 and D2. Then give it a human soul. It didn't really die thanks to the Pyromania D3 mod. With that it'd be, like, M -1?! It can't die!! Wow... who'd have thought I'd garner a few friends. Speaking of which it would be nice to see a Vandread mod around here (w/o the lame robot thingy, we'd fly dreads and use machine cannons instead!!!)

Well..

As a SERIOUS Gamer, with a room in my house DEVOTED as my "Gaming Room" (even sound proffed the walls)

i better spill my life story as to how i became so obsessed.

It all started for me in 1986 when i was well young. first played ELITE on my New Stepdads Amstrad CPC 6128.
I Was Hooked...
Also played Starglider, Tau Ceti & Academy (if anyone remembers those)
Went through the "Sega Master system & Mega drive" Phase going into my teenage years..
Then i "Woke Up" and bought an Amiga A500+ then a 1200.
Played & Fell in love with "Wing Commander"
When i was 16, i sent off to this company for information about there "Top of the Line PC" Whitch at the time was an old Pentium 75 Mhz, 8 MB of Ram, 1 GB HDD.

They Screwed Up, Sent me the PC instead of the info.. Even sent me a RECIEPT!!!!!
Spent £65 On "Wing Commander 3 - Heart of the Tiger" (Glad PC game prices are more reasonable these days) Loved it.
Got "Wing Commander 4 - The Price of Freedom" for £45 when it came out. THAT kept me occupied for yonks & Yonks, deffinatly the best..
"Wing Commander - Prophecy" Was a bit lame compared to WC3 & 4..
I Moved on to greaner Pastures...

I Also LOVED Frontier & FFE. Both were Fantastic, but way too buggy, and i had V1.0 of both & no access to patches.
Dunno if anyone remembers but with V1.0 of FFE, 50% of the time ur save games wouldnt even work, (Hence Ensueing Lawsuit for realeasing game when it barely qualified as a Beta Test)

Bit of a long Gap now.. In this Gap i have However learned how to Build my OWN PC's and im no longer stupid enough to go into a shop & Buy a "Packard Bell" or a "Dell" with the sales pitch of "Fast Proccessor" but everythings else is crap.
{{ Also lost a great girlfriend coz i couldnt let it Drop that she was stupid enough to Go and buy a brand new PC from PC world for £1000 When one of my Self Built systems was Twice as fast and half the price... VERY silly of me.. but she should have trusted me.}}

Back to Topic...

Next "OMG !!!! I WANT TO HAVE YOUR BABY'S" Game for me was
Freespace & Freespace 2, (Picked Both of them up in a Bargain Bucket for £4.99 for both)
BEST FIVER I EVER SPENT!!! OMG Without a doubt, Best Balanced Multiplayer Space Combat game bar NONE!! Would have loved to be on PXO in there "HayDay". The Thought that must have went into Freespace 2
to Ballance all the ships & Weapons & even the caps having all there own weaknesses & Blind spots. all with there unique ups & downs is totally mind boggling & sooo well calculated.
Shame about the freespace Liscensing Disputes, As if there wasnt all the "politics" in positive there would have been a FS3.

Played many MANY other Space Sims over the years before & After this point (including many that have been mentioned already)
But not many realy "Held Me" a game has to have a Radical new approach to the same Genre to realy "Grab My Attention"

Then, One Day, a m8 Gave me his XBTF (He was an impatient Gamer & Didnt like the thought of ACTUALLY WORKING for his Rewards.)
OMG!!!!!!!! XBTF WAS MY SAVIOUR
I loved it so much.... ** i h8 Admiting this, but...I Actually D/L'd A Pirate Version of XT as i just couldnt wait to play it. First & Last time in my life i have EVER done that. DONT FLAME ME! am VERY VERY ashamed @ that!
(As Egosoft have never been great at distributing there products) But i eventually bought the origional XT on E-BAY
**PS. EGOSOFT.. TAKE NOTE!! DISTRIBUTE BETTER!!! I HAD TO OUTBID SOMEONE WHO WAS OBVIOUSLY AN X NUT AS I PAID JUST OVER £40 FOR MY SECOND HAND XT!!!!!! ** Was Worth every penny though...

Then.. One Day.. Heard about this "Freelancer" on my FS2 Clan Forums.
Bought it, Played it... Storyline Campeign was FANTASTIC!! Systems were HUGE & VARIED!! IM IN HEAVEN!!!!!
Then... a week or so later i compleated storyline & Realised there was nothing else to do in entire universe.
Tried Multiplayer, But once u get 2 million, u get an Eagle, Some Nomad Blasters/Cannons & a Couple of Tizona Del Cids.. Thats it!! Ur maximum...
How Sucky...

Thankfully, i Re-Installed Freelancer as this great bunch of guys @ "Starfyre Studios" made a Mod called "The Next Generation" or TNG.
(Am currently Beta Testing 1.8, and i must say.. its SUPERB!!! 10X Better than Freelancer 1.0 (and all the other mods ive tried) if FL came with TNG.. it would have done A LOT better for itself & perhaps not earned itself its crappy name.

X2 TBH Was something i never heard off, And when i "Discovered" this site and realised X2 Was soon to be realesed.. i creamed my Pants!! was soooo chuffed!!!
But.. Despite X2's MANY qualitys.. The "Downsides" Are MAJOR ones for me..
1:- Small Sectors & Universe "little bit of a dissapointment" After cruising through Freelancers Border Worlds.
2:- The "Dead Universe" Feel to X2. I mean.. X2 is basicly XT with a few more ships & pretty grafix thrown in.
3:- I mean.. You look at these forums.. people are constantly trying to justify to others "Why Buy a Carrier" or a "Destroyer" When you can RULE the universe with a Nemesis??
i cant overlook that... there should be a clear reason...
4:- One of the worst AI's ive EVER seen.

I have faith in 1.4 Sorting the bulk of these probs & others

I mean... i LOVE X2.. its my Favorite game.. The X series is just Pure Class!!! (barely beats Freelancer TNG Mod.)
But i cant help but Notice all the "Loose Ends", "Afterthoughts" and "Bad Planning" & "Poor Foresight" in X2, Plus its lack of anything grippingly new over XT.

Obviously, i play a lot of other Genres, RTS, FPS, TBS and all that, but my true love is open ended Space games.

Well Done to EGOSOFT for Creating a PURE MASTERPIECE!!!
Ergo.. a heavily flawed one, but there again... ALL the great Achievements in History Began with there share of Disasters.

Like so many other people the first space game i played was elite.
Used to play in a team. Me on the Joystick my best mate doing the Keyboard and recording trade prices, and my brother telling me what the ship were (had the poster out).

Then played wing comander and X-wing games.

I did not have a PC for about 5 years so got out of this type of game (sorry guys but was one of the Playstation Generation for a while).

When i returned to PC game went looking for a good space game. Tried Freelance (every time i went through one perticular warp tunnel it crashed), then i tried Eve online (BORING).

When i first tried X2 i did the Tutarial and thorght that i would never play this. Put after starting my own game and discovering this forum the game has opened up into a hole universe of oppertunaty.

Now all i have to do is make sure i dont play too long so as to upset the misses.

Thankyou Egosoft.

I personally saw it in a shop, and liked the look of it. I had had (don't you just love pluperfects) a blast with Freelancer, albeit a brief blast, and it looked like what I needed as a replacement with lasting appeal. I went home, read the Gamefaqs reviews (some pretty disparaging, mainly control system and depth based), and got even more excited, and wend and bought it on a credit card :P. Haven't looked back since (except to my bank :() :) :)
