Wassup! New fellar here, hope I make a good start here. What were the reasons for you people playing X2? Too many space combat movies? Like science fiction? Or too many games? Here's mine:
I WATCHED TOO MUCH JAPANESE ANIMATION!
X2 is freeform. And you can play without guns if you know how. There was one show that really inspired me to start playing X2 though. A short story going by the name of Vandread. Yeah, yeah, girls and guys again, but the combat scenes were okay. And the characters were PIRATES! At least in X2 I can play that way (bad news is that I end up shooting the pirates now)... And X2 allows players to fly even the big-a** M1 and M2 cruisers!! So maybe we could have a Titan called "Nirvana II" or something.
Well I'm out. I'm looking for friends, not enemies. Thanks for your time, whoever reads this.

I started playing out of nostalgia really.
I used to play Elite many years ago when I was but a nipper. I saw some reviews that said X2 was the best thing since Elite, and having not played a space sim since those days, I decided that it was about time I did.
Happily, my introduction to the X-Universe is a good one.
I think others have a similar story to mine, but I believe a large amount have been into X since the early days.

ditto to dawson, I saw reviews for the origional X-BTF and later tried the demo. This was when most other games looked crap and played crap, but X-BTF didnt on both accounts, then got hooked.
I missed out the X-BTF expansion, never could buy it where I was. So when X2 started to get touted again nearly 2 years or more ago, I started following this site again.
One thing X-BTF taught you is patienace, as there was no time acceleration until a fair bit into the game, so still waiting for 1.4 patch or more likely now should be called an update.
Just got to replace a dead game pad in the mean time, lying not used mine has died, so will have to trawl the best stick threads of a year ago

My reason is similar to Gdawson. I Loved sundog (1985!!) then elite, then frontier, the first encounters. Been hanging out for a space game since first encounters. I thought Freelancer might be the answer but it wasn't. X2 is, and can still be much much more. Hopefully 1.4 and the expansion pack will fill in the "much much more" bit above.

Space, endless, no boundaries, you know; I think it has a natural attraction to all of us. May have something to do with evolution; it's somehow in the genes.
Played Elite ages ago and after that started desperately to find something similar; in vain.
Over all the years many space games came out but the first that triggered my attention was Homeworld, then Cataclysm, Heagemonia, O.R.B. and Homeworld2. But they all do not have the freedom you will find in X2.

one game, freelancer
that game i loved, and this one even more.
i think some of the other guys can relate to that one
that and i was getting bored of installing old games and completing them in an hour, just gets plain dull.
but when i first got it, (sorry to say) but i didn't enjoy it as much as i do now.

Like many here I played Elite in the 8-bit days (on a BBC Model B), went through Frontier, other space sims, X-BTF, XT and naturally I'm here playing X2.
The root of it all is Elite, to which X2 is the clear natural successor.

My introduction to X2 was by mistake.
I was looking for a space game to play because i am a Trekie, I like Sci Fi.
I read a few game revues and i thought this game looks interesting and then i got the game.
I nearly gave up in the beginning because I started to play the game without reading the help files. I did not know about Seta for the first two weeks.
When I came to this forum it was like a revelation because all my questions where there to be read.
Suddenly I was becoming very proficient in the game.
I like JAPANESE ANIMATION, i watch it all the time.
I have not played Elite or any of the old space games before so X2 was very new to me.
Thanks Egosoft for a very good Game.
I hope the 1.4 upgrade will improve the game and the expansion will make it even better.

When there are no more games it is time for music.

I missed Elite so much. Frontier was good but dissapointing, ffe was crap. I'm nervous about Elite 4.
Homeworld, Cataclysm, Homeworld 2 & Haegemonia LOI are grate games but you're really just a General whereas in Elite/X2 you're a pilot right there in the thick of things.

I never played the precursors to X2, however the Wing Commander series was excellent and X2 IMHO is better than WC ever was. I thought Freelancer might have been a better Privateer but X2 blows them all away. It is so cool that I can actually own a "Tigers Claw", hell I could own a whole fleet of them.

similar, I played elite, then later onto privateer, then I waited and waited and waited for freelancer.
The game that was meant to make me happy again, but it didnt
I just went to one station, bought something, flew to another, sold it....
sometimes pirates would annoy me and get in the way, but otherwise not terribly exciting (had a great storyline though).
Then I heard about X2 and when it came out had to get it
luv it

I saw it in tescos and thought i'd try out a different genre for a change... dont play space sims often...
the one exception being X-com Interceptor... i love that game...
only reason i dont still play it cos i was getting an annoying bug with jamming satalites that were there but wernt if i tried to kill them...
