Sadly until docking and wing commands work I find the XL carriers pointless in battle. Also due to the issues with L and XL ships navigating gates, accelerators, etc. there is no point in not just sending your swarm of S and M ships "naked".

I have mothballed my carriers until they can be used to... well carry things.

Go, play Elite Dangerous with BIG ships...
Go, play Star Citizen with real BIG ships...
then, back here and say SORRY!

Get over yourself, if it's flight model you don't like then just go play other games, because it is not going to be anything like ED.

I think it is less that they are unplayable, and more that they are absurdly impractical. I spent 14 mil on my teladi L destroyer only to find he could barely navigate and only really used his two front weapons. Not even close to the 8 nemesis I could have bought

My L trader was literally useless. For 10 times the price of an m trader he has 4 times the cargo space and cannot navigate jump gates.

In general the combat, from the ship classes to the weapons to the stations to the war functions, are essentially non-functional at the moment. While you can pew pew and things blow up, it has no soul, no tactics, and no reward worth mentioning yet. Im sure they will fix that, but it does somewhat sting that they knew this wouldnt work at release.

Ultimately, L and XL ships are useless, for many of the reasons listed above, I won’t repeat them as we’re all aware already.

No ones asking for them to be like ED or SC, but having them a bit like X3 or XR would be a good start, they had real presence and were actually dangerous.

At the moment M’s are basically heavy fighters and L and XO are simply broken.

Another point that seems to have been overlooked is infrastructure.
For example, buying a destroyer or carrier in X3 was a serious undertaking! Buying the Hull was the easy part, equipping it was usually much harder, and much more expensive than the ship itself! Difficult to the point that many players would plan ahea and build an entire factory network designed purely to supply their impending war machine. Weather or not this was intentional or incidental on Egosoft’s behalf is unknown, but added a whole new element to the game and a reason to build a trade empire. As combat was expensive and required logistics. In X4 this simply isn’t the case.
