I'm sorely tempted to pre-order on GoG. I've always welcomed the Steam-Free .exe versions of the prior X games as it gave me the flexibility to easily have multiple builds/instances of the game. It also worked great with RAMDrives, which I tinker with from time to time, with no pesky Steam DRM getting in the way.

Its a shame as I would have Bought On GoG if I had known that was going to be a thing.

Going a little off-topic, but the problem with many Steam titles is that they don't actually run off the RAMDisk. They look like they are, but they're not. I did extensive testing of this when I wasn't getting the benefits I expected - a couple of years ago now - using diagnostic tools allowing me to see exactly where a given app was reading data from. While the game executable launched from the RAMDrive fine - if Steam was running - it then proceeded to load most of the data from the Steam source folder, not the RAMDrive. You can still sometimes see some benefit, as the act of copying the data to the RAMDrive can also cache it, so it's already in RAM when the game asks for it. In my testing, copying the folder, deleting the destination, then running the game as normal saw it running / launching a bit faster. I'm not sure if every Steam game has this DRM built-in, but several I've tried do. An example would be Skyrim - before my game folder got waaaay too large for a RAMDrive, and also Kenshi, which I play quite often. There are ways around this by setting up a new Steam folder on the RAMDrive, then ensuring this image is loaded before launching Steam, but that's a little more faff.

Note: I of course use symbolic links when the games Save folder is in the main folder, so saves aren't lost when the RAMDrive is purged. I tend not to write a fresh image - aka "saving" the RAMDrive game folder - though this can speed things up potentially.

Note 2: I attempted RAMDrives with X3TC and AP as well as Rebirth, and they only yielded decent results once the No-Steam .exe was available. Without that No-Steam .exe, I observed data being read from the source folder, not RAMDrive.

My intent is to revisit RAMDrives in depth at some point...I did do a quick test a couple of days ago, when discussing this subject on another forum (Kenshi) and, as before, the game was not accessing all the data from the RAMDrive copy.

Whoops, I probably posted my thank yous in the wrong thread but it doesn't hurt repeating: THANK YOU for bringing this game on GOG on release day!

As for the OP's Steam Workshop question, there is no native support on the GOG platform for mods (the most "official" thing is a couple of articles on their site on modding some of their popular games). However, as I understand there are ways to download any Steam Workshop mod without using the official Steam client and then it's just an archive that one can install in their game directory and assuming that modding wise the Steam and GOG X4 versions are identical[1] it should "just work".

[1] Note that on release, the GOG X3AP copy was incompatible with mods that change gamestarts because it itself included a "mod" to remove the Hardcore mode from it (which wouldn't really work on a DRM-free platform like GOG) but this was quickly fixed.

Excellent news - more choices the better.

To me personally DRM-freedom is no a big win if the game has to be ran on Windows. Additionally I'm supporting Steam over GOG because Valve is pushing open source and open standards forward unlike GOG.com.

Hi all, I've been around for some years now, but this is my first post as I'm very excited to to discover that X4 will also be on GOG on release!

I have my full X games collection on GOG, so this is the best news I've read to days! As a side note, I've waited until yesterday evening to buy the CE, then, just after I bought it on Steam, it came to my knowledge that X4 was going to be released on GOG too...
I immediately asked for a refund and already bought the game on GOG!

So THANK YOU EGOSOFT! :)

I bought the game on GoG without any concerns at all and personally I do not play games with mods I play them as vanilla as much as I can. Having said that I did use mods on XR but that just didn't help me to love the game only have 52 hours in that game and most of that was idol too 25ish so I get why folks like mods and that's cool it's all about choices but it detract from the original game play for me. However if Egosoft endorse and include it then I'm happy to use it for sure.

Yeah, you can install games wherever you like, including multiple copies which is incredibly useful when it comes to mods. Don't see why it wouldn't work off a ram drive.

From what I've read GOG and Nexus Mods are sneakretly working on some sort of more integrated solution for those who want it, but so far all we've seen is the odd collaboration and mod spotlight. For what it's worth I've never run into an insurmountable problem getting a mod to work on GOG installs, and that includes mods off Steam Workshop, but then most of the games in question are modding-friendly.

Given the X series' history in that regard, I really wouldn't worry about being left out when it comes to mods.

Just wanted to add my appreciation.

I like both platforms but prefer to buy through GOG where possible as I admire their customer focus and like what they do.

Haven't pre-ordered as I've been burned with previous X releases  but I'm really hoping for a positive outcome on this one.

I'm new to using GOG myself (i started so i coul dplay thronebreaker) and i'm not a steam hater, Steam does what it sais on the tin and perhaps im just lucky i have good internet although i rarely play multiplayer games. And DRM? who watches shows on Amazon and Netflix? they track everything you do aswell and if you have bad interent your also screwed.

But for this one i think i'll get the collectors on GOG now i know its on there! and i see we get the first 2 dlc later on aswell!
I used to list PC parts here, but "the best" will suffice!

Even though I might not conciser myself a steam-hater - I got over 100 (reasonable expensive) games on steam - I definitely prefer GoG as of lately. Especially as they seem extremely responsive to the needs of gamers (i.e. fair local price policy, DRM-free, curated games, no launcher needed). And thus, I rather have GoG using my money to bring more DRM free games to their platform instead of a money grabbing, data-collecting DRM giant taking my money without any guaranty that any game I payed for would ever be truly mine.

Thank you, Egosoft, for taking this step and distributing your games through GoG for pre-order and purchase on launch day! As of this early afternoon GMT I 'own' the CE of X4: Foundation.

I just ordered the game on GoG - a very straight-forward sign-up and shopping experience!

I assume the download links will appear upon release, and it appears there are various options from using their Galaxy client, a "lite" downloader and even directly through the browser. I assume it just saves the install files or perhaps an .ISO file like my MSDN downloads...

The standalone installers are executable files with some data archives. Used to be in 2 GB chunks due to old file system limitations, but not always the case for newer titles that wouldn't run on affected OSes anyway.

There is also gogrepo, if you want to backup or manage your collection in a more automated way.

I know this is off topic, but if i already bought the CE version from Egosoft, and they gave a Steam key, is possible to change from Steam to GOG? I have Steam and GOG installed, but i prefer anytime GOG and no DRM. Or maybe in the future Egosoft will remove the DRM.
Thank you in advance.
