Thank you for X4 on GOG

Post by adeine »

Since all the other relevant threads are locked, I feel this is in order to give our thanks to Egosoft for listening and doing this, day one no less.

True to my promise, I've just bought the Collector's Edition and I'm sure I'm not the only one who will be glad to see this and voting with their wallet, so to speak. I usually don't preorder on principle and for a lot of people Rebirth will be a case in point, but for changing your approach on this I feel I ought to make an exception. Yes, even if the launch were to be riddled with issues. :)

So yes, thank you and please have my money.

Be nice to see a DRM free Steam release too then so theres no need to mess around with a no-steam .exe

I suspect this is because Egosoft is self-publishing this time around.

As a steamafobe this is the best news ever. £39.99 British pounds for the standard version. Thanks for this.

Very cool, though i wonder if I we're to get it on STEAM, would it use the GoG/STEAM library link function to also grant me the GoG version like they did with rebirth.

That library link thing was a one-off promotion that we were invited to take part in by GOG. We have no say in whether they decide to offer it again.

Wow, great news on GOG version.

I bought Steam CE, because I'm lazy and I like Steam workshop, but still GOG version is nice if (ever) Steam die.

I had no intentions of pre ordering X4 after being stung by steams 2 hour saga last time around as I got called out and left the game in steam page mode it showed I played for 18 hours straight through when in fact I only had it on for 20 minute as I got called out on an emergency and when I finally got home I was shafted by steam even after proving I was not at home they were not interested.

So this is really great news I have just bought the CE version and with the 30 day no questions asked refund on Gog.com that gives me ample time to try and decide if it's up to scratch, thanks Egosoft this gives us all confidence in your work.

Also from me: Thank you for putting X4 on GOG. I'm one of the people who don't like Steam, so I was already resigned to waiting for a long time.
I've bought the collectors edition and now I'm really looking forward to Friday!

X4 wasn't on gog when I looked before preordering on steam or I will bit of a willy and somehow managed to miss it.

X4 Steam cancel request is approved, so I can buy it cheaper and without copy protection on GOG.

I want to jump in and add my thanks for making it available on GOG day one! This is an awesome move by Egosoft that was also completely unexpected. I can't tell you how excited I got seeing it suddenly advertised on GOG's Galaxy client.

You've earned a pre-order from me for this. I can't wait till Friday!

I too was pleased to see a GoG option from day one. I've not much experience with GoG, only some older titles quite a while back now. So, I was wondering how well GoG handles new titles where there's upcoming DLC and a current modding community. Is it possible to miss out on anything, such as Mods, when choosing GoG over Steam? Are updates generally as timely? I expect regular patching and tweaks for the first few months as issues are ironed out and additional features are added - as is the norm with an X game. It'd be a shame to be left waiting if there are critical updates already pushed to Steam for example.

I have a fair number of Steam games and I find the Workshop to sometimes be exceedingly clunky and often plain broken. Recent changes in how the Steam Workshop is implemented in Space Engineers for example, broke offline play options for me without lots of faffing around. My hope would be that modding the GoG version is fairly straight-forward, but what if certain mods are only available on the Steam Workshop, do GoG users just have to accept that? I prefer using the Nexus offering if available for all my games.

Not my intent to derail this thread, well, maybe a little bit lol, but I think it's a valid question now GoG is an option.

Cheers,

Scoob.

Yes and no; if people only upload their mods to Steam Workshop, you may have to do some manual searching and/or fiddling to get things working - although I expect with the X modding community being fairly active on the forums here (and presumably the Steam and GOG versions being 99.9% cross-compatible), this will be less of an issue.

This is entirely up to the developer. The recent X3 patch was timely on GOG, fwiw, although they only offered the test/beta release on Steam.

Again; entirely depends on the mod(ders) in question. Nexus is a great resource if people release there as well, but generally you can get Steam Workshop mods working through some manual finagling.

Obviously no need to worry about offline play or other shenanigans; GOG's client is entirely optional so will never get in your way. If you do use the client, you can disable auto updating for the game and/or roll back to previous versions if mods require it for compatibility reasons.

I saw the GoG announcement, 20 Hours after I had Purchased CE on steam, Unfortunately, theres no time to get a Refund and use that to Purchase On GoG, before the game is released. Its a shame as I would have Bought On GoG if I had known that was going to be a thing.

Thanks for the response @adeine, I appreciate you taking the time.

I'm sorely tempted to pre-order on GoG. I've always welcomed the Steam-Free .exe versions of the prior X games as it gave me the flexibility to easily have multiple builds/instances of the game. It also worked great with RAMDrives, which I tinker with from time to time, with no pesky Steam DRM getting in the way.
