Just a random question (I have yet to cap one): When you do capture the Aran, do you need top-notch marines or will any do? And does it come with a jumpdrive or do you need to transport one over?

It is found in UFJD sectors.( sectors where the UnFocusedJumpDrive sends you.
here's how to cap.
It's an old post but it may help.

While 4-5 star mechanic are a good idea you can get by with 2-3 star in Mech if you use an M7M. the boarding pods add 2-3 stars to the marines mech skill. (I believe that the Mechanic and Hacking skills are the only ones that counts here. however it'll be better-safe-than-sorry so bring 1-2 marines with 3-4 stars in Fighting too.)

(highlight :thumb_down: with mouse to show.....in the off-chance you've never read a spoiler) :P

I'd hunt for it with an M7M and at least 10 but preferably 20 soldiers. when you DO find and capture it just dock the M7M on the Aran and then transfer your jumpdrive/e-cells/whatever over to the Aran and jump for home. :D

Good luck and happy hunting!

You forgot to tell him to get the docking computer extension so he'll be able to dock instantly.

:oops: I guess I made a bad assumption based on the fact that I always have a docking computer and transfered everything over when I got my Aran.

My 2 cents... (X3TCv3.0 vanilla)

Just found and Capp'd my first Aran last night in an Unknown sector with a Xenon base.

FYI: It DOES NOT show on Gravidar. It does show up on the Camera View of the sector if you dropped an ADV Satellite

FYI: It DOES show on Gravidar after it's cap'd;

FYI: My Cobra docked nicely with the autodock command, transfered the Jump Drive and eCells to the Aran, then jumped back to Aladna Hill;

FYI: My Aran only had 9% hull when I cap'd it. I used the repair laser for @ 3 minutes 'till it went hostile, kept it on for another 10 BEFORE I launced my marines (20 5* in all areas), and kept the repair laser going during the boarding process;

Fact: From 9% to 100% hull repair cost @ $137 million, plus 6 2gj shields, and ALL cargo ugrades (@ 47million) actually exceeded the Shipyard "resale" value of the Aran by $ 12 million;

I think the Fight I and II software, Life Support, and a triplex scanner was all I got with the ship. After 100 unfocused jumps, she was the first one I saw so I got what I could..

I'll try to remember to edit this post and load some screenies of my cap..

Have Fun..//D//

Edit @459pmCST for redjay and Nanook:

RedJay - That's correct. It will show up ONLY in the CAMERA view (I press the K button when the sector map is open) of the sector map. I was parked about 1k from it and the Triplex scanner didn't show the Aran on the Gravidar and it DID NOT show on the Sector map object list until AFTER it was cap'd..

The Aran was in the SW corner of the map when zoomed out to max, not in Gravidar/Triplex scanner range, but believe me, you could visually see it !!

Nanook: True, 5* Engineers and Mechanical marines should have worked fine, but I was tired of the jumping (@100+), dropping Adv Sat's, and looking around. So, once I found one, I wanted to BE SURE my grunts didn't abort the boarding due to hull integrity... :!:

When you say that ^^ Wizrd, do you mean you dropped an Adv. Sat. and then just zoomed out and it showed up clearly?

EDIT: Thanks for the answer Wizrd.

It's always a good idea to have a high engineering skill on all your marines to help avoid any additional hull damage. You really don't need to even worry about using the repair laser to fix it if they all have 100 Engineering skills.
Have a great idea for the current or a future game? You can post it in the [L3+] Ideas forum.

Finding ARAN.

Post by David Howland »

Sorry to be dim on this point but I have only checked out seven sectors for the Aran. The point is, what is it I'm looking for, I would hate to get to UFJD 200 and be wondering how many I have missed. If it does not show on any scanner does it show as a proper ship to the naked eye, or is it a shadow or a light, do V.E. goggles help. How far out do I have to search to clear a sector, I am searching about twice as far as the sector map at the moment. If it cannot be targeted, how do I get my marines to board it. Any help would be much appreciated.

Wellll... 1. it is visible to the naked eye though in darker sectors you'll only see the running lights and they can be pretty hard to see.

2. someone linked to a guide on how to capture it earlier in this thread.

3. drop an Adv Sat when you first drop IS and then go to the sector camera via Sector map>K key and then zoom way out with the [End] key...if there's an Aran it should be clearly visible from what I've heard about that method...

you actually need to zoom in before you search, if you zoom out you can't see the area where the aran is probably sitting and the camera won't move beyond the edge of the screen.

Help?

Post by David Howland »

Ok fellas I think I have found one. It is registering as an unidentified object, cannot scan it, when I laser it it will not turn enemy.
Q.1 Is it an Aran.
Q.2 If it is why is it so tollerant to my repair laser.
I cannot mess around too much keep getting attacked by Khak M6s running low on missiles.

registering as an unidentified object > meaning you can target it, meaning it is no Aran.

Thanks StarTroll.

Thanks for that StarToll, I must admit eyeballed it did look more like a house than a ship but on the sat. camera view it was defintely ship shaped. Ah well, carry on searching!

Most big ships don't run from the repair laser. A bit surprising, but I gather Ego figured you might not appreciate getting whalloped by the the tail end of the return ship objective you were trying to fix up to board to take home.

Im on my 3rd one so far, they can be a pain to find and a pain to board, I actually had to repair one with my little laser for half an hour before my marines would actually finish a boarding op. When I finally got it the thing had 8% hull left.

Adv Sats make it a lil easier to find but i prefure to jump/save/cheat/reload and move on if nothing. Even if you know its in system it can take a while to locate.

I don't suppose someone could show a screenshot of how the ship will look on an advanced sat? Also, where about on the map does the Aran usually show up? I've been searching for hours and hours, jumping, dropping sat, picking it up again, jumping again... no luck and don't know how many I may have missed!

They aren't always in range to use the sats, sometimes they are 120km out from the center and you cant see them. I actually found 1 right infront of me, and i couldn't see it on sat cause it was to far out. Ill see if i can find a Screenshot.

Ok, RL sidetracked me, finally got a chance to move some ships around.

First pick is Aran parked next to a Boreas.

Boreas/Aran

Second is a Cobra and Aran behind it. Cobra looks bigger then it is to lol.

Cobra/Aran

Third is same Cobra and Aran with Sat view. The little spec under the +x in the sat view is my Springblossom. Ive read of the Aran described as a big cylander and thats about what it looks like on Sat view. It is also vary well lite so you should be able to spot it with the naked eye sometimes, it is still hard to spot.

Sat View

Lastly is a straight ahead sat view.

Sat view forward looking

Sorry if the images are small, photobucked compresses them and I dont upload images often enough to know a way of getting higher rez uploaded. They started out as 8+mb files on upload......
