Are you planning to fix this issue? (no offence meant, just asking)
apparently there were some issues with russian characters.

and tbh, im not sure how to fix it, as im using the QT API for accessing the file system, so its the API itself that is havn't trouble understanding it.

i will look into fixing it, but i cant promise anything.

could you give me an example of your directory, so i have something i can test it with
QT should understand them well, 'cause lots of my friends are using it here, in Ukraine.

Nice to hear this :)

My directory is like this -
C:\Program Files\Новый Диск\X3 - Воссоединение

(If the characters are not readable, try CP 1251 encoding)

Seriously, thats asking for trouble imo.

I use C:\X3. Very simple.

All you need to identify it is "X3", why put all the other cr*p into the path name ?

Simple solution that save Cycrow a lot of work. Use "X3" as the complete pathname !

May be so.

I'll use something of this kind with my next installation of X3

It is the default path. And I have lots of games which install into folders with Russian characters and work fine (with mods, updates and all of this stuff)

Yes, it will save Crycrow lots of work. But knowing of this issue will let him to improve the software and increase his skills a bit. :)

BTW does anyone know, which registry keys (except those that can be found easily) are created by the installer, so that I can edit them to specify a new installation path? Or they are easy to find and there are no tricks about them?

Microsofts default installation path was a bad bad idea imo.

I ignore all default installation paths, and always install to a single word directory in the root directory.

Makes for simple installation paths (especially if you need to find something later, or worse, type it in manually later). The stupidity of putting things down 10 levels of menu has always amazed me, when most things only need 2 or 3 at most.

When I install a game, I want to see it installed when I look at the root directory, and I dont care who the distributor and maker were and dont beleive their names have any business being in the directory structure.

Maybe its just me, but long directory paths really annoy me.

Now I understand that it was a terrible mistake (/me acted like a complete dumbass)

As for me, I keep tracking of major game developers and publishers, so having a separate folder for each makes sense for me. I just reorganize the shortcuts to start the game and almost never use the Windows Start button

Windows Start button
:o

I make a point of avoiding the damn thing. They built a splendid icon driven way of starting programs and then stuck the whole thing back behind a menu. Talk about going backwards. If I use it, its got an icon on the desktop !

same goes for me

Will it be sufficient to rename the folder and correct the paths in the registry, or it will be necessary to reinstall the game to fix the problem?

X3 isn't all that fussy about the register, so renaming or moving it will work just fine.

althou if you do that, the installer wont be able to use the registry entry to find X3, but you can set this manually easy enough

Is there a way to manipulate the SPK files without the use of this utility? I can't get the Linux version to compile on my 64-bit SuSE, but there are a couple of scripts in this format I would like to play with.

Thanks!

not unless you make ur own program to do it.

whats the reason it doesn't compile for you ?

it uses pretty standard c++ so it should compile no problem, and doesn't need any depencies.

i managed to get it to compile fine on Mandriva, Ubuntu and FreeBSD

I guess I am missing some of the headers. It tells me it can't find "_null.h", and searching through for provides, I can't find any dev packages that give it.

Hopefully I can get it resolved.

Thanks for any tips...

My issue is solved. The trouble was with Russian characters in the path name. I renamed the folder and corrected the registry entries, and everything works fine now.
And your tool, Crycrow, works fine too :)

I want to do something like this. I'm having trouble with Realspace backgrounds mod. I wanted do a reinstall, but I have a copy of my unmodded, original X3 folder on my computer. Can I redirect the target location of my X3 icon? and will Cycrows installer find it? I just want to clear a few things out (for instance the Realspace Mod is renamed Cat/Dat 14, I know XTM is Cat/Dat10 but the 11-13 I'm not sure what's what) I did not want to bother with the complete uninstall/reinstall and the 5 CDs if I didn't have to.
To clarify, can I copy my X3 to C:X3 and then change my "PlayX3" icon's target to that? Is that all? Then reinstall the mods?
Thanks.

I havent tried it, but seems from a previous answer that its yes.

09 should be 2.5
10 should be XTM rar
11 should be XTM patch spk

I'd suggest you remove 12 and 13 and see whats missing. In the Gunbus mod, 12 is a PHQ spec. Alternatively, remove everything after 09, and then make xtm 10 and the patch 11. Then go from there.

Yes, the new location can be picked up by the installer, but you have to select the directory manually the first time. After that, its in the drop down menu and you just select which directory to use.

OK, thanks very much for the help. I forgot I have the Military HUD by Ulfius so that's 12 or 13, but I'll redo everything from 9 up as you said.
[EDIT] BTW, all scripts would just be reinstalled over everything, but will the Plugin Mgr show them as uninstalled or will it be necessary to DL all the scrpts again and install individually. Hope this makes sense. :)

if you copy the whole directory over and point the plugin manager at the new directory.

it will find all the previous installed scripts as well

I copied my "clean" patched directory to C:/X3. Opened Plugin Mgr and clicked "File/Change X Directory" and the Plugin mgr display is empty of any scripts. Are you saying it will it find the scripts in my other X3 directory and copy to my "clean" directory? Or do I manually copy the scripts file to the "clean" patched directory?
My whole purpose is to get Realspace BG installed correctly, so maybe I should install it first as a fake patch free of any scripts and then install script files, but I don't want to digress, this is not the Realspace thread. :)
[EDIT]BTW, I went ahead and installed the scripts again, but when I tried to install LV's full pack it made program mgr crash and now there are no scripts showing, but they are still installed in the directory.

the scripts will only be listed if you copy the whole lot, ie you copy and existing X3 directory that already has scripts installed.

if you are just copying a clean directory with no scripts installed, then the plugin manager will display an empty list
