Even if he resigns to avoid the impeachment trial, he's still going to face a shit load of criminal and civil cases against him.
I like that you give him enough credit to assume that his total disconnect with reality is down to strong willpower...
lol well I almost said 'character', but then considered that other than of the cartoon variety, he has no character to speak of. I'm just interested to see what happens when he's beat upside the head with reality. Which will happen first... he admits his failures and wrong doing, or does he fully crack and get committed to an asylum? Either is acceptable to me.

Wow, slightly late to the party with this news but there it is.
A US diplomat has gone on the record to congress to confirm that THE most impeachable bit of the whole Ukrainian saga (the quid pro quo element) was indeed the directive originating directly from Mr Trump.

I concur with the opinion piece, if the US doesn't impeach him in light of such behaviour then it's political institutions have lost any and all integrity.

I can't even imagine what the future would hold if Trump isn't tossed out on his fat orange ass. I've joked off and on about moving to Canada or Australia, but if the senate fails to put an end to this walking disaster, it may just be the tipping point for me to gtfo. I still have faith, though, that the republican senators will reach deep down and tap into their humanity when the cards are on the table, most of them at any rate.

Hah. Their weak defense of Trump might as well be randomly selected cards.

A group of Republican members of Congress have forced their way into the classified information secure room in the House while carrying mobile phones because they're mad it was being used to hear classified testimony (despite there being Republicans on the committee that was hearing said evidence!), in flagrant violation of security rules.

What the hell were they thinking, they are supposed to be responsible adults at an age that should know better, not some kind of teenage schoolkids. It looks like a couple of them have a pretty good chance that they will not be up for re-election, not that they will not be ineligible to be elected, but due to the fact that they are stuck in prison because of what they did. What did they think they were going to achieve or how did they think it would make things better for Trump or even their own political party, it has done the exact opposite. They are nothing but a bunch of Trumps total and utter idiots, and kind of explains everything they have done in the past. Honestly, I think they should all resign.

So the republican defense of Trump to date has been:

I know you are but what am I?
Oh yeah? Well I'll do it again, whatcha gonna do about it?
Now to calling them nerds and knocking their books on the floor.

Such great role models we have.

Also, apparently about half of these idiots had a perfect right to be in the room anyway, without any need for the illegal theatrics.

Honest question, using ad blocker, I am located on the UK. I clicked on your link, ars technica, read the article, at the end, it was an option to vote in a a poll for me. On left top corner is shown Action Button, on right top corner is shown Ars Technica, the question is "Where do you stand on the effort to impeach President Trump" with a slider.

Does not matter what I choose, wait a little bit and a pop up tells me that I should contact MP Tom Brake to know where I stand on conducting formal impeachment proceedings.

Is this legal?

Interesting, it's the same behavior for me, though it doesnt know what my representative is without asking for my address first.

I dont immediately see anything illegal about it. It's just polling of readers. Public info for contact representatives is available in US to everyone. Though, it's interesting that a British MP was entered too.

Just odd polling I guess.

Sounds like amusingly fudged up geo-location to me :). It probably goes "who's the local representative of x with this ip address", without bothering to limit the query to the US.

I hadn't seen that (I have an Ars subscription and it doesn't show when I'm logged in), but logging out and looking at it it's a tool by this group to encourage people to contact their representatives about stuff in the news articles they're recommending. As others have said, it seems like a mildly amusing omission that it doesn't check that the person is in the right country before recommending that they contact their representative, but at any rate there's nothing illegal about suggesting people write to their MP/Congresspeople/etc about things they feel strongly about.

My ad blocking must be better than yours as I can't find any kind of poll to vote in, or any kind of popup either. So I tried it on edge (what a horrible slow browser that is) and there it was, along with some adverts and a popup. Used the poll to say impeach Trump and it shows a result of 87% in favour of impeachment. :D 8)

Also told me to get in touch with someone called Andrew Slaughter, who ever that may be.

lol... so the republicans whining about the rules the house is using to run the impeachment inquiry were apparently written by the republicans in 2015 when they had control of the house. And of course, the claim that republicans are excluded from the hearings is an outright lie as there are 47 republicans on the various committees involved in the inquiry. More "winning" by team Trump.

I spoke too soon. There is no team Trump. "I don't have teams. I am the team" https://twitter.com/i/status/1187769002409545733
