Website Maintenance [UPDATE]

Post by BurnIt! »

[UPDATE]

Maintenance work has been completed.

Today we added an additional server to support the already existing one with our website and forums. Not only will that extra machine serve as a backup solution, it will also help to balance the load during busy times. This way we can cope with a significantly higher number of visitors resulting in a more stable web experience for everybody.

----------------------------------------

We are currently performing maintenace work on our webserver. During this time occasional downtimes are to be expected.
As of this time we expect the work to be completed today at around 8PM (GMT+2).

Sorry for the inconvenience.

I take it that the "Ran into problems sending Mail. Response: 550 relay not permitted," is part of that?

Oh well, I'm not that bothered...

It is part of that - however it's supposed to be fixed already...

It's done :)
Hope everything works well.

If you see that "ran into problems sending mail" message again - no need to worry, your post is fine. The message should go away in a few days at max - just takes some time until the new address of the second server is known around the net.

Load balancing - very nifty - and inbuilt on the latest M$ Server editions. If I ever get my head around it I'll be a rich man with an mushy brain...

It must be in the transmission of bytes to users... the Servers might be alternating which of them send you which bits, or they might each pick up half the users...

I've never ever checked that, and I'm still getting it, although it's a bit random now.

You get the error if there is a problem and anyone has asked for emails to be sent for the thread you are posting in. It doesn't mean your message hasn't been posted, and as mentioned above it will hopefully be solved soon.

It should now definetely be solved - of course our mailserver needs to accept data sent from the new server (different IP) - and it does that now.

We're not using the highly "advanced" load balancing mechanisms though as our experience showed that the database and webserver almost always shared ~50% of the CPU time we simply have the database on one server, and the webserver on the other one - really simple, but effective nevertheless.
