Nice guide Al.........I will give some of these tactics a try. I will point out one thing, for me at least, I captured more ships using my disco than in my nova. It probably has something to do with the fact your kicking there @$$ in an M5, with lighter weaponry, and they are in a heavier ship. That would probably scare anybody. Khaak M3 is a decent capture ship. The Kylon beams allow you to cut them off almost instantly saving from doing too much damage.

What I think you'll find is that its continual hitting of the hull in a disco that causes the captures. If you try the same in a Nova (and can stickbehind the target) I'd expect you to get the same results. I dont think the capturing algorithm is actually as complex as people make out.

Well, I gave it a try, didn't seem to work for me too well........probably could be that I am impatient. I like my nova, have 2 Bhepts, 2 Bpacs and 2 IDs to try capping, dependent upon which group I wanna use. I got one xenon M to eject, but six other ships decided they didn't want to. I reduced there hulls to about 60% each, then went back and forth getting distance, then nailing them with 2 ID's reducing there shields almost instantly. None of them bailed, only had 3 of them ram straight into me. Tried again with an L, this time almost got destroyed by an idiot centaur that decided to shoot through me to get at the L I had damaged. Is it because I picked a nova, or because I am unlucky?

i recon you were unlucky. :D , we all learned how to capture a ship here, but sometime you are going to decide how to capture a ship in greater profit for yourself.
there are quite a lot options when you want to cap a ship:
1. usually, you want cap a ship with 80% + hull left
2. you do not care the hull condition about the ship, you want to obtain equipments on the capped ship
3. if and only if some1  interrupt you, make sure you are the one who killed the target, little money of cource :(
4. etc etc blah blah...

i choose an option from time to time, when i cap a km3, i chose option no.2, sometime even the ship got 1%- left, it still leave me shields&weapons, coz equipments are more profitable than empty 80%+ hull. other times i prefered option no.1, unless i fought in a big crowd, i never think about option no.3....

i do not see any different from cap ship using disco and cap ship using nova. after a while of practise, i can use nova with only one BHEPT to cap ships, at least km3. i just keep hiting it, keep its shield steady lower than 3%-, and wala, they are yours sooner or later.

Does everything in here still work?

Take hull down to 87% and then use ONLY IonDs until bailout?

:D 1. it is working 2.not use ONLY ID, any method will do, i currently do not use ID on my Nova anymore. i am using a single Beta HEPT to do all capping :)
there is nobody to stop you from using ID :P , but look around in this forum, u will find out that using ID sometimes will take you about 30mins to cap a usually empty hull.
i am not saying using ID is ???, but using normal laser will give me more pleasure by kicking AI piolt out of their ship.

Nothing Quite Like a Paranid Zues mounted with Beta Shocks in Kha'ak space. Get your transporter ready, they don't last long. you'll capture all the kyon emitters you want, great for credits and you'll get plenty of M5, M4 and M3 ships as well. thanks for the tip on the shields Al. thought the only way to get em out was to scare em. take them straight down to the 87% mark and pray they bail. Going to try your ion method. :D[img[/img]

Al,

Thanks for the input. I did not play the previous X game and this was my first. I finished the game before I went online... didn't want to spoil the fun. After much reading, it was only you who pointed out the fact that we must let their shields rebuild. I did not know that. It does make sense. I captured a Tel Osprey but didn't quite know how. I will try it this way and have much more fun. Thanks Again.

The 1.4 update you say?

*starts caculating*

Do you have time to make a X3 capturing guide over 2 years? maybe you can plan ahead already :P

and now serious:

better late than never ;)

Cant recall ever intensively useing this guide (well maybe at first to understand what capping is...), but im sure there are people who had good use to this guide

The scare thing really works, i went from around 10% capture rate when trying to chip away little by little at their shields and hull to around 70% when i just go in all guns blazing and try and guestimate how many shots to let off to leave them with around 60% health. So much fun, fly in, shoot like mad, listen to the cries for mercy.

Indeed. The most fun I had capping was with a Super Bayamon with 2 Ions and 2 APSGs. I haven't triggered the Khaak yet (I'm going to try and wait until I get high enough to capture the Khaak ships the proper way), so I tromped over to some of the empty unknown sectors and found a pirate base in one of them (near Wastelands, I think). I'd attack the base, deal with the onslaught, and load everyone up in my Elephant. For added fun, I had several ships doing mobile mining and ore collection at the same time. I used Brianetta's multi-monitor techniques for mobile mining, and Al's suggestions for capping, and all was well. The sector was huge, so it wasn't a problem to carry on something dangerous near my mining operation. :)

Considering that it's probably been a year since I did this, (and I've gone to other games and come back home at the end of all of them) I think it's about time to thank Al, Brianetta, and the other who have been here helping since before I started lurking for their help in making this game as fun as it is.

Thanks guys.

I like my way of capping using a pirate M3. It works very well I used that method when I first started playing. I am now capping using a pirate M3 using a ion disruptor and a belta Shockwave generator.

Very good capping ship as you cappture ships with 60-70% hull. :D

Only problem on ASS mission having 3 M6's to take out takes a while.
