Joystick too sluggish

Post by bowman »

Hi,
I played through X-BTF years ago with MS Sidewinder PPro 1. I wasnt totally satisfied with the movement of the ships with joystick. In battle againts several enemies you had to make really quick turn to catch their backs and make U-turns then they got past you.
The thing is, that then you did the sharp turn left or right, it was really hard to keep your ships nose in the opposite direction. Normally I made 270 degree U-turns then I was supposed to do a 180 degree turn. I think this is a problem with analog joysticks.
After about a years hunting for X-Tension, I got my copy. I'm doing 'The Mission' as you call it. The enemy-ship is too damn quick in its turns. My joystick is now MS SW PPro2, and I still have the problem. I keep reading that players play X-Tension with keyboard and mouse. Is it worth trying?. Do I get more precision to my aims? I'm having big problems holding the aim on the enemy, mostly shooting outside or at my wingmens.

I am the local self-acclaimed expert on The Mission, well at least that part of it. I only ever use the keyboard and mouse. The main problem you seem to be having is getting behind it. After all once you are there you dont need to move much at all, except to adjust your aim.

To get behind it trying flying slower than full speed and it should also slow down, then track its turns as it passes you and you should be able to follow it round, sometimes better than others. What you need to do is when you manage to track it quickly use the boost to get up to max speed and you should be right behind the ship. Might that a few attempts but I know its worked for others.

the problem isnt the joystick per se, but the built-in inertia in the flight model of X. I Dont know how many, if any, rudder tunings you have on your current ship, but if there are some, try fewer (which basically means getting a new ship since they are irreversible once applied). its possible to tune the rudder to the point where the ship is virtually uncontrollable. even without rudder tunings, the ships tend to be sluggish in stopping their turns, I think its Egosoft's way os simulating inertia in spaceflight. if you're intent on using a joystick, try to use not just the pointer to target but try to use the radar display as well to determine when you need to stop lessening the turn so you end up more or less with the target in front of you. As you see the red dot start to move towards the front of your ship in the radar, start easing up on the turn.
I'm not too clear on how egosoft models turn radii but theoretically a slightly slower speed should allow for a tighter turn as well.

but mouse works too, just look at Al the master capturer. :D
