Game (7.5 & 7.6) crashes almost immediately in the main menu

Most times the exit code doesn't come up. Hasn't come up in a long while actually. But when 7.5 first started in beta, I think it was 1061, is that possible? Physical device loss.

That's very much possible, but unfortunately it's a bit of a catch-all that just tells us that the driver can't contact the hardware. It doesn't tell us why!

The last few times today...there wasn't a crash dump file triggered.
Why is that?

I have no idea I'm afraid. Could be a setting that you didn't set or a permission that you didn't grant when you reinstalled Windows?

Also...the 7.6 beta dissapeared from my steam-beta-join list..

Steam probably just lost track (Edit: actually that is because you reinstalled, as Beta subscriptions are local to your PC). Just re-enter the password from the sticky thread at the top of the Public Beta Feedback forum.

Staying on the 7.5 release but I added -debug all -logfile debuglog.txt from the public beta notice and put the debuglog in the dropbox just now. Very specific about an error to CreateGraphicsDevice

I did some research on MSI MS-7D91 system crashes with that issue report (LKD_0x141_Tdr:6_IMAGE_nvlddmkm.sys_Ada, type 0) and almost all the professional advice given by Microsoft and MSI is to clean reinstall or clean roll-back the Nvidia driver (clean means removing all traces of the current/old drivers before installing). If that didn't help or vary the issue at all then the techs suspected a hardware cpu or gpu issue was present. I know that's not what you wanted to hear and doesn't help much.

One other piece of advice was to ensure that all important OS and BIOS updates were installed.

In the meantime I ran the Intel® Processor Diagnostic Tool
The CPU passed all the tests, not hinting at that nasty intel degredation thing going on.


Do you have a recommendation for howto test the GPU for anything weird happening (other than starting x4)?

I found a checkbox in the nvidia app so they also receive all my future crash reports.
Maybe that influences the driver development.

The gpu stress tests that I have heard most about here with no concerns expressed are 3DMark and FurMark - that said I haven't used them myself as I have had no need to with my NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 using the latest game-ready driver versions; these perform just fine for me in X4 under Win11.

Since your system is MSI, you might have MSI Kombustor recommended somewhere in its support site and tools.

Well, the GPU passed all the tests I put it through, stress, stability, artifacts, etc. ; everything.
And since I don't experience any problems during any other cpu /& gpu heavy application, I'll file this experience as a weird combination (my-hardware/nvidia/x4)

I'll keep following the betas and get the latest nvidia drivers. Maybe some day I'll be able to play x4 again....maybe not.

hello there,i have the same issue 1061 exit code,have all the newest drivers etc,but did try something and it seems to work fine for me(playing over longer time not tested) running evga 1080ti kingpin 7820x cpu Windows 10 64bit and did change target in evga precision X1 program to minimum on power and gpu temp change this up again ingame or so it will crash,if you have any such program with your gpu you might do the same and test it if it works for you,hope this come in some use

Edit: is only in the menu when you adjust the power and gpu temp up it will crash,did start a new game on minimum setting to get past the exit code and start a new game, adjust it when the game started did not have no effect(few minuts of new gameplay terran cadet) no crash

Yes, please give them all the info they ask for.
They'll be happy to hunt down the cause for this super rare hardware-driver-software-whatever issue.

Unfortunately this issue is very tricky and is known for its "unexpected" behavior.

Here are few things that I would ask you to test in order to investigate your case more and maybe even fix it:

1. Previous week i think NVIDIA released new drivers which fixed lots of instability, please check out this link, select your NVIDIA 4080 super card and install new drivers https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/

-> if this doesnt help...
2. go to your config.xml (documents/egosoft/x4/config.xml) and find and change the resolution entries:
<fullscreen>false</fullscreen>
<borderless>false</borderless>
<res_width>1904</res_width>
<res_height>1041</res_height>

run and test. did it crash?

3. it would be very helpful if you could record a video with following:

a. open Task Manager in Windows
b. find "Settings" in the left bottom corner and checkbox "always on top"
c. start a game and record the game with Task manager on top (so the moment with crash is also captured). Please open "Performance" tab in Task Manager and select your dedicated GPU
d. if the issue is easy to reproduce then do at least 3 captures and attach the videos here

oh and also attach your config.xml with what you experience a crash !

The file will be in Documents\Egosoft\X4\[SteamID] where SteamID is a numeric value. The defaults are in the game folder, and the file we want contains your personal settings so downloading one would make no sense. Not being able to write to the personal folder that your settings are saved to would certainly be a problem, but would also have nothing whatsoever to do with the crashes you're seeing.

There's no default config.xml in the game folder. Steam file verification and reinstalling doesn't restore it and there's also no personalized config.xml in the Documents path.

Yes, there is, but like most files it is stored away in a catalog file so you can't see it. But that file is of no interest to us. We want your config.xml.

Are you using a NoSteam executable? If so then it would be in Documents\Egosoft\X4 directly.

Tried it again...the game ran long enough for me to get into the settings menu and restore all settings to default.

config.xml reapeared in the Documents path.
