[7.60 FREEZE/CTD]: Guaranteed permafreeze after 10-30 min with native Linux - Improved after BIOS update.

Post by ketchuplips »

  • Version: 7.60, English (GOG - Linux native build)
  • Mods: Occurs on both modded and vanilla
  • Game Start: Occurs on any/all
  • Problem: Guaranteed complete game freeze/crash after 10-30 minutes regardless of situation or action. The freeze is such that the mouse becomes useless and ctrl+alt+del (or alt+f4, etc) doesn't work. Unless the game was launched in the terminal (alt+tab and ctrl+c works) or the system monitor was open (arrow keys and ctrl+k works) I have to hard reboot the entire system. All other aspects of the system remain responsive, however, so it's not a total system lockup.
  • Error messages: None given due to the nature of the freeze/crash
  • Save: It's not specific to any area or action, modded vs vanilla, new/existing saves, or chosen start
  • System:
    • OS: Linux Mint 22.1 Cinnamon
    • Kernel: 6.11.0-26-generic
    • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600
    • GPU: AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 (8gb VRAM)
    • GPU Driver: Mesa 25.1.4 (kisak-mesa)
    • MOBO: Gigabyte B450M DS3H
    • RAM: 32gb
    • SSD: NVMe
    • System Info output: https://pastebin.com/Stzv1iBT (sans net/repos for privacy)
    • vulkaninfo output: https://pastebin.com/Xjrut3Xr
Notes:
Everything is fully updated, including the bios, and all hardware is at factory settings (I'm not even remotely comfortable with tinkering with hardware over/underclocking). I'm not sure what other output would be useful or how to capture system logs when the freeze/crash occurs... if there are specific commands I'd be happy to oblige, but please keep in mind I'm not a Linux expert.

All other aspects of the game seem to work great. Other equally intensive games don't have similar issues. Multiple full game reinstalls and file verify/repair attempts have not fixed the issue, and neither have numerous settings changes (low vs high, etc). I fully power off my system nightly, so it's always using a fresh reboot. I don't run any applications in the background while playing games, and am a 100% offline player. I'm new so I can't say if this was happening prior to 7.60.

I was previously using the Windows build via Proton but I can't remember if it was doing this (sorry!). I will be able to more easily test that in a few days once I've swapped my GOG purchase for the Steam version, but if possible I'd rather stick with the Linux build since it is waaaay more efficient on my system.

Hello ketchuplips,

Thank you for the report. I will see if I can reproduce this.

In the meantime, can you try editing 'start.sh' and change line 20 to the following:

Code: Select all

./"testandlaunch" -debug all -logfile log.txt
and then send the resulting log.txt file after the crash.

Just checking - what is your used resolution in the game?
I had Acer Predator-Helios gaming laptop earlier with AMD Ryzen 2700 + Radeon Vega 56 mobile and running Windows.
When I played the game using 3440x1440 (LG 34" ultrawide monitor) I had similar issues. Vanilla game crashed to black scteen (version 4.x & 5.x).

After I reduced resolution to 1920x1200 (and after changing monitor to 27" 2560x1440) crashes stopped.

I don't have that laptop anymore as I changed to newer Asus few yaers ago.

I don't want to jinx it, but it seems like this may be resolved. At the very least I was actually able to play multiple hour+ sessions yesterday and today without the problem rearing its head (a first)... though of course that means I wasn't able to get any logs of the freeze/crash.

Hugely embarrassing on my part, but turns out my Gigabyte B450M DS3H bios wasn't as up-to-date as I believed. I had just done a long overdue update a few weeks ago to version F67d (from Sep 2024), but by sheer coincidence right after that a new one was released (May 2025's version F67g) without me realizing or doing the proper due diligence and actually checking.

I'll continue to monitor the situation just in case, but it seems optimistic! Apologies for wasting everyone's time.

I only play at 1920x1080 (60 Hz, with VSYNC on) so I don't think it was an overloading problem. Though in my situation it wasn't crashing to black, but rather just completely and permanently freezing on a single frame like the world's most annoying desktop wallpaper.

Hi. I had recently downloaded 7.60 from GOG and after installing it would freeze as soon as I tried to launch it. After reading this page I added the suggested text to the line for debug and log. The game now starts and I was able to install all the DLC successfully. I haven't tried playing yet but I am hopefull now. This is what the log file put out.

So somehow the debug got around the problem.

I notice that when it launches in terminal and then I exit the game, that it writes this.
