I put in hundreds of hours years ago (before kids) and the last couple weeks I have gotten into X4 Foundations like an insane person.
I am hitting a point where I need some objective views here. I don't THINK you can play this game wrong but....
This game has been running literally non-stop for the last 2 weeks. (Non-SETA) EVERYONE loves me. I have like 200 mil and 20 factories. Xenon are kicking the Split bad and I am trying to funnel supplies to them to let them push them back.
I am getting a LITTLE over whelmed at this stage as all my stations are being harassed so I am spending most of my money replacing combat ships to protect my factories and ships. I mean I have the PHQ but I have yet to do any actual story missions or even encounter the Boron.
Okay with all of that said. Have I made a mistake? Does this game hold up long term with me running it non-stop like this? My kids and me are all getting into the cheering on factions when they push back a little. Just at a point where I am wondering if the game holds up for the long haul. Would it be better to start fresh armed with the things I have learned and stick with a more streamlined game I don't run non-stop and I just maintain a couple factories while pew pewing manually.

There are players with games that they have been playing for thousands of hours, and others who like to start afresh regularly. Just do whatever feels like the most fun for you. If you're enjoying your empire and being able to influence the fate of the various factions in the game, carry on! If trying again and seeing what happens if you do things differently sounds more exciting, go for it!

Like CBJ said, there's players with savegames much, much older than yours. I wouldn't be surprised if we got someone with a savegame that goes all the way back to 1.0. I personally like the early and midgame most so I tend to not run very long games and start new playthroughs though even I have a game run that's plenty old (coincidentally it's my Split playthrough, heh).
Aside from what you want to do in your game, the only real limiting factor you may run into longrunning savegames is hardware limitations if your CPU is running short on fumes depending on exactly how busy your universe it and the time it takes for the big savegames to load as those can get pretty long depending on your hardware.
If you're asking for tips on how to solve ingame problems (like your stations getting harassed or how to help the Split against the Xenon) I'm 100% positive people will be able to give you bunch of tips if you want it, though unless you want generalistic advice a bit more detail always helps (and you can always upload your savegame to a reputable fileshare site and people can take a detailed look at your game state).

Armed with the things you already know and starting a new game will only end up arming you with even more things you didn't know, and so it goes on. If you do want to go for the long haul and build an empire that's full of excitement, try not to kill all those nice Xenon chaps as they are an endless source of entertainment
I personally always start a new game with each and every major update or new DLC so all the new additions start with an equal footing.
