Looking for people currently playing XRVR

Post by StestRokit »

I have been looking at theXRVR's SteamDB page and seeing there is often only 1 or 2 people playing XRVR. I am one of them these days. I would imagine that most X players are playing X4, but I keep going back to this title because it starts with VR.

I am very thankful Egosoft released this title. I know it was not financially successful for them, but I think it could have done much better. I don't think the fact the game is VR was the thing that held it back. It took me multiple attempts just to get into the game and past the start page and I have seen similar comments in many reviews. Some people pressed on and some gave up.

It was actually my first exposure to the X Universe. I have bought all the games now - even though I am sticking with XRVR. Maybe I will get around to the other games. I am certain there are benefits to them, but there is nothing more magical than being in that cockpit and my real dream would be for someone to launch a made for VR Space Sim where you don't need to take off the headset and you can actually use the controls in your cockpit. Maybe that is a pipe dream. I think Elite Dangerous has the best cockpit experience, but I thing XRVR is the best VR Space Sim I have played.

I am now about 140 hours into the game, and I expect that number will grow substantially. But what I would love to know or hear from is other players who have or are currently playing XRVR. I would love to hear what you really enjoyed about the game, how many hours you played, what were the goals that you set for yourself in the game to tell your own story? and what would you love to see that would make your experience better.

I do love the scale of the game... when you are flying among the stations or large ships. The visuals, the music...and I am someone who fully relates to the love of a real economy concept as the basis for a sandbox. I prefer the player experiences to the management aspect of the game, but that is personal choice. I am really enjoying my time. I think I am looking towards building a decent economy and building a fleet to start taking over sectors...Maybe I become the scourge of the galaxy - after becoming its hero by wiping out the pirates and Xenon as best I can. At the point I am still at, I am still finding new things in the game.

I know XRVR is a adaptation of X:Rebirth, but if I could go back and ask for one major change it would be to change the use of displays and generally overhaul the User Interface. I would love to see actually use of a 3D headset and have holographic displays - especially the zone map/tactical display. Get rid of the monitor and give me a small hologram. And then also be able to see a map with my ships and contracts and flight maps... ah a guy can dream!

Thank you Egosoft for at least giving us this gem of a game. I'm sure one day I will jump up to X4... mind you I wish you would at least provide head tracking and a VR camera there, just as an option. It would be really cool to fly different ships especially with the new flight models coming....I use a HOTAS and Mouse and keyboard for XRVR (and if I had a better HOTAS I would probably eliminate the Mouse and Keyboard). I'd probably try adding Voice Attack for other controls too, but the last thing I would need would be tracked controls... I almost never use them in XRVR

I bought it on sale. Could not play due to hand sets not recognizable. I have a Samsung WMD VR. I would LOVE to give this another try. Looked awesome.

Ugh! that sucks....

I wonder though... and maybe you could prove me wrong on this... I don't use my Oculus touch controllers at all after I launch the game. I only rely on the headset for the visual experience, and then I am using a HOTAS, with my keyboard and occasionally I use my mouse. You should also be able to use a game pad (xbox controller) to do everything. Give that a serious try. The VR controllers can work (at least the Oculus/Meta Touch and the HTC Vive Wands, but they really don't work well - I'm not knocking the game for that, but other controller are much superior, and the mouse gives you a laser pointer that works really well too.

Try launching the game flat - it does work both flat and in the headset and set up your controls so that you don't need the VR controllers at all. Set it up so you can navigate the menus. Then you can go into the game in VR and use your game pad or HOTAS or mouse to set up as many controls as you need. I will admit, setting up the controls is a very time consuming part of playing this game, but once you get it functional, it is worth it and then can be tweaked along the way. (By the way SAVE YOUR CONTROLLER PROFILE!!!...it will come in handy)

This video is actually gold to help setting the game up so you can get it to work.

I will check back on this thread if you need any other help to get the game going - don't be afraid to ask - I tried several times over several years before I got it working, but I wanted to play it so much, I kept coming back to it and finally found the fixes I needed.

Well, hi.

I wrote this guide regarding controls:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/ ... 3408256712

Basically, the game is very difficult to get into and desperately fights the player. If you manage to get through, there are some good moments.

Various things in no particular order:

* It hasn't been updated to support wands on new headsets
* Lots of cut content (station interiors) which could be restored.
* Quests aren't great. The initial quest you get even in freeplay (to fight xenon) gives the game disserves.
* Handles scale well. Omicron area above planet is very good/memorable.
* No shadows from NPC.
* Aggressive distance clipping when player is standing on a flying capital ship. (things disappear beyond 1 km)
* Smalltalk minigame being used to gain trade agents is irritating.
* Problems with capital ship pathfinding (they always fly to the losest zone first even when flying in straight line would be faster)

My impression is that there were a lot of experimental ideas and not all of them were good. In current form the best activity to earn credits is boarding ships. This is far more efficient than trading when it comes to making money.

Bought the game recently, on a sale. The only missing one on my shelf titled Egosoft's games (well, I didn't buy the standard X Rebirth, since I've got the VR edition). I had some weird problems to get my HOTAS to work, but finally managed to play the game. Not much of "wow" effect, after years of playing ED in VR, but still an interesting experience to me. After a few hours I stopped playing it finally realizing that it's definitively not the X4. The thing that's been driving me crazy was the lack of manual landing I accustomed to in X4 and a few other things.
I am gonna go back to it some day to continue the journey, tho. XRVR is moddable game which means, I may give it a shot with my art skills. The game just doesn't have those mechanics I like in X4 so it won't be the love for a life for sure :)

For me, X Rebirth VR is the "space simulation" that offers the best space immersion (especially flying through large station complexes is impressive). The gesture control feels amazing to me, but you shouldn't think of it as a virtual joystick (like in VTOL VR). Instead, you use it more like a conductor's baton. Combined with strafe movements, this creates an incredible flying experience.

That’s why I’m writing this post. The controller functionality of Pico controlers goes beyond what’s described in the article above. I’ve listed my controller settings below. A few preliminary points that took me some time to figure out (if I even understood them correctly — I’m not a programmer). I’ll just write down the points loosely; maybe they’ll be helpful to other headset users :

Before configuring the controllers, disconnect any other joysticks or pads from the computer.

When starting the game in Steam VR mode, it assumes a VIVE controller is present. Therefore, the button names in the controller settings always refer to VIVE controller designations, not PICO ones. Some designations match (e.g., Trigger). You configure the PICO controllers under Controls/Vive Controller/General Controls.

The buttons on the VIVE controllers are mapped to the PICO controllers through Steam VR.

A VIVE Trackpad analog axis is a PICO joystick analog axis.

A VIVE Trackpad Left Click is a PICO joystick center push-and-move-left "click."

A VIVE Menu Button(R) Click is a PICO B Button Click.

To configure gestures on the controller, gesture control must be activated.

To assign a gesture, you must perform it with the controller.

In the table below, only the rows where a button is assigned in my Rebirth controller configuration are included. All other rows not present in the table below are marked as N/A in my setup. The PICO column is my translation to the PICO controllers, so it’s not present in the game controler settings.

Image

The following buttons seem to be internally assigned:

- 3D Pointer Select - Pico Button A
- VR Reset - Pico Button B (long hold)

In the other Game Controls, I also have the following settings that might be important:

- Bi-directional Throttle: ON (Grip(L) + Trigger(L) = Backwards)

- Mouse VR Pointer: OFF

- Autoroll: OFF (so that you don't constantly fight against autoroll with gesture controls)

- Toggle Mouse Lock: OFF

- Additional settings can also be made under Controls/Menu Navigation and Controls/Platform Movements.

I hope this was useful to someone.

I am using ALVR with SteamVR, and the controllers are automatically detected as Quest 2/3 - which are functionally identical. Maybe this eliminates the issue described in the above post.
