Map is laggy - Resolved

Post by Tranecarid »

Since I joined beta (around a week ago) I noticed that everything on map is jumping for lack of better wording. Then I look at the place my character is on map, everything around me if smooth. Everything else (I assume everything game considers OOS) is skipping about few frames. Not sure if it's some form of optimalization, haven't noticed anything about that in patch notes, but if it is, the visual side of this is tiering to look at. Especially since I am one of those players that spend way too much time looking on the map.

Please see forum rules and provide the information requested there, in particular whether or not your game is modified, your system specifications, and a savegame showing the state of your game universe.

Version 7.50 (549980)
Game is not moded in any way.
Below I am pasting link to my save.

Detailed description:
I noticed the problem as soon as I joined beta (I believe it was 07.01).
Viewing map within the vicinity of the player character is buttery smooth - ships flying near the player are shown flawlessly flowing through space and their position is updated on map on every frame (I assume).
Objects moving on map that are not near the player are jumping or skipping frames between updates on their position in space.
After some testing, objects coming toward the player stop jumping on the map when they come withing approximately 40 km. Objects moving away from player start jumping approximately 100 km from the player.

Hate to spam but would like some form of confirmation - am I the only one experiencing it? Are devs on it? Works as intended?

It was mentioned somewhere as a known issue at the start of the 7.5 betas, and that they were working on it, so I think we all just refrained from mentioning it since due to that note.

But yeah still happening, it has improved a little during the progressive beta updates, but still very noticeable as you say where ships are more than circa 30km from you, also depends upon how zoomed into the map you are and how many ships/stations are on screen at once, the more there are the worse it is.

Its not currently mentioned in the Beta patch notes sticky topic at the top of the beta forum under Known issues, so presumably the devs think its fixed ? idk.

I joined around beta 4 I think and didn't see anyone mention it anywhere. But I'm glad it's a (somewhat?) known issue, thank you for a confirmation.

It should be noted, that by design, the map does have a delayed update of ship icons and such in certain cases, which yes gives a "jumping" effect.

Thing is it was nowhere near as bad in 7.1. With the first 7.5 beta it was really bad, and as mentioned previously it has got better since with successive updates to the betas as the devs promised .. But even now with 7.5 beta 6 its still worse than it was in 7.1.
Still got to try 7.5 beta 7, downloading.

@Tranecarid - Give 7.5 beta 7 a try.
For me and my machine spec' the devs seem to have improved on this problem a little bit more.

I don’t see much difference. Might revert to stable to compare but on my machine it’s jumping same as before. Doubt it’s the hardware issue (9800x3d + 4080s).

Is this still an issue, or has it improved significantly?

I'm answering because it seems like anyone else is not noticing.

For my machine since 7.50 released, its much better than earlier betas, but still not quite as good as it was in 7.1
But personally if its a case of any adjustment to this would affect the overall performance of the game, the map update is not so important to me. It just stood out initially as being remarkably different to what we had before.

Any ships on the map that come within around double the radar range, seem to be smooth, but anything further out occasionally has the update position lag. It also seems to be affected by how much you are zoomed in/out on the map, closer zoomed in with fewer ships means smoother updating of ships positions, but the further out you go (before different ship classes start getting hidden) the more likely they are to be laggy.

Any ships engaging travel drive (for example if you "Attack" target a Corsair Prometheus and it immediately detects you coming after it .. game magic) then the faster it goes the bigger the lag position jumps as it starts to scream off the edge of the sector and out of Sensor Array range.
