Best Central Sector for Mining Fleet Range?

Post by Praxdra »

Hey everyone,
I’m wondering if there’s a solution to this.

When setting up a mining or trade fleet, we usually define the range in terms of jumps (for example, up to 15 jumps in my case for mining). So, my question is: which sector would be the most central on the map in terms of jumps?

I want to assign that sector as the base for my mining fleet, so they can reach 15 jumps in all directions and cover as many sectors as possible.

I hope this makes sense. :gruebel:
Thanks in advance!

If your miners need to make 15 jumps between mining and delivery you may as well not bother. Their efficiency will be absolutely abysmal. As in "less than 1k ore/silicon per hour per miner" abysmal.
Even the vanilla limit of 5 jumps is already pretty useless in practice (unless you take advantage of the highway ring) since your throughput per ship will be terrible.
You'll get much better return per ship mining stuff as locally as possible.

You can make something like that work in the center of the map around the highway ring (i'm doing something similar with a network of trading stations in HC1, Holy Vision and Trinity Sanctum III) since it nearly removes travel time along it, but without that feature anything more than 3-4 jumps isn't very feasible in practice when there's usually a resource deposit within 1-2 jumps of wherever you want to deliver that'll get you multiple times the profits per ship used.

That out of the way if you insist on your plan i'd suggest a look at Watchful Gaze.

It has all 5 main resources with good yields and can support a large number of miners, it's close to the highway ring via Hatikvah's Choice I and also right next to BOR and ZYA territory.
Heretic's End one gate over has a 1000% workforce bonus, 181% sunlight and scrap so it's ideal for setting up your production stations.
It's also neutral - if you keep it that way pirates won't cloak in the sector, making it easy to keep them away from your stations.

And with 7.5 there'll also be a connection to TER, PIO and ANT space via the new gate between Getsu Fune and Ocean of Fantasy.

Thanks a lot for the detailed reply! That’s super helpful, especially the point about miners efficiency and the suggestion for Watchful Gaze.
I’ll definitely reconsider my strategy and look into optimizing for local mining.
The info about Heretic’s End and the highway ring is also gold, I appreciate you taking the time to explain it all!

If you are doing a human and boron centered playthrough, though the sector itself sucks, stations can spawn in or near the hazardous regions so m and s class ships die as they approach or take off, The Void is fantastic. After completing the Boron plot, you can hit all of their sectors, almost all of the argon sectors, all of Ant, Segaris and Terrans.
A long while back, there was a post in which the author used a python script to calculate the optimum sector for centralized trade and mining, it calculated the amount of sectors within the five sector range of a station and it was Hatikvah's Choice.
