Noob needing a bit of help - Seems resolved with update 6.0 -> 6.20.

Post by deaths hand »

Just not long got this game on gog on sale. This and rebirth are the only ones i didn't have. But im having a bit of a performance issue and it's probably my fault for ramping everything up high.

This is what im playing with

Ryzen 7 5700x (pbo and resizable bar on)
32gb 3600mhz cl16
A factory overclocked rtx 4070

Set the game to ultra preset. Used smaa high for anti aliasing as there was a tooltip somewhere that said msaa doesn't play well with a shadow option. Turned on vsync as well. That's the settings i put in to start with.

It was going well. Was doing the tutorial because this game is different. Was getting 130 fps + to start with. Got to the part where it's on about activating travel mode. Did that and flew to the target. Next thing my fps tanked hard all the way down to 25 fps. Worse still rts shows its only using 1% cpu and 32% gpu by this point and im in free space so there's very little around me. I tried to fly back to the station but it wouldn't change. Even in normal flight. From then on its stuck at 25 fps. This happens every time i try that tutorial.

What am i doing wrong? What am i missing here? Surely the game is supposed to utilize my hardware better than that?

You'll need to provide your full DXDiag an Vulkaninfo, as requested in the first thread at the top of the forum, for us to have much chance of being able to help you. Driver versions, sound devices, and all kinds of other factors can be important, and we can only see those with the requested info.

Appologies. Didn't read that bit up top. This will be the proper post then. Dxdiag and vulkaninfo included.

-Version 6.20. The current gog version.
-No mods. Game is litteraly a fresh install
-Atm just the flightschool tutorial
-Frame rate, gfx usage and cpu usage tank from 130fps, full gpu usage to 25fps only 32% gpu and 1% cpu usage. This happens at the point you are told to follow the target and enter travel mode. From there the frame rate tanks and never recovers until i quit and restart the tutorial.
-No changes on any front and a fresh new install of the game.
- Just that i have over 400 pc games. I game regular between multiple games and ive never had this problem before.

Just to add, i havent actually tried the proper game yet. Just the tutorial. I'm about to test the game itself to see if the problem persists there.

So i've finally pieced this together and figured it out.

I don't download games through gog galaxy. I download the offline installers. I have many games on gog and have a 5tb external filled with gog installers. I have my reasons for doing that. I have 2 pc's and a laptop. I only need to download it once and can install on all my machines.

Turns out the offline installer gog supply for this is only version 6.0. I just assumed it was already 6.20 but it wasn't. Gog galaxy kicked in and downloaded the update. That's me now def on 6.20. It says so on the menu screen.

I tried the young gun start. Spent half an hour flying around that sector and never had a problem with it. Fps between 80 - 140 fps. 85% of the time i was bottlenecked by my gpu. The rest of the time was cpu. It was using my equipment properly the whole time.

Haven't tried the flightschool tutorial again yet but am about to. I really want to just get this out the road and settle into playing the game now.

I use GoG and gave up on the offline installers. Rather, I'll download a game once, via the GoG Galaxy Client, then back up that folder - usually zipping it up.

As I have ample space on the gamer currently, I have a vanilla, linked to GoG Galaxy version of the game. Then I copy it to create a new instance, I then apply mods to that new instance and run that version of the game.

Note: I initially used Offline installers because my Broadband was terrible (2.5mbps down on a GOOD day), so I tried to download as infrequently as I could. Now I have gigbit Fibre, so my whole way of doing things has changed... well, that and offline installers were often a bit quirky / out of date, as you've discovered.

Glad v6.20 sorted things for you. Your system should play the game really well, I have a 5800X3d (VERY good for X4) and a 3070 (perfectly fine for X4). I run at mostly higher settings but I've noticed one performance gremlin... I can usually run 4x SSAA just fine at 1440p. Looks nice, performs well - 60fps, limited - however, with certain fog effects in certain sectors, fps will TANK. Going to 2x SSAA or 2x MSAA seems to fix the issue. Only happens in very limited places, Heretic's End where a certain thing pops in where there's fog was a prime example.

putting fog on low solved that drop for me, didnt notice anything looking worse
Fixed ships getting spawned away from ship configuration menu at resupply ships from automatically getting deployables.

Cool. For me, I prefer to keep fog high (I like the effect) and turn down AA a little if I have problems. Either way works, depends on your visual preference. I don't mind a little jagginess from slightly lower AA settings. At 1440p on a 27" screen sat about a metre away MSAA 2x looks perfectly fine. If I look closely SSAA x4 is fantastic, but then I get the fog issue. AA + Fog don't play nice at higher settings.

I understand that LoD Setting and Effect Distance can also have a big impact on performance, but I've always kept those at 100.

For me, with my current settings, it's rare that a performance drop will be down to either CPU or GPU being maxed out. Rather, it's in large battles where I'm present that I see FPS drop alongside both CPU and GPU load. It's like the engine can't quite cope with what's going on. To be clear, these are pretty big fights with literally thousands of projectiles in-flight at once, many ships of all classes, stations etc. I'm at the game stage where I'm fielding quite large fleets and lots of them, actively taking over sectors. Additionally, my game is modified, which pushes things a bit harder. So, an extreme situation.
