There is no instant docking mechanic as far as I remember - you have to

• approach the dock-node
• select the "dock-node"
• hit "F"
• select "Dock" (or docking request or whatever)

... or replace the last two actions with pressing Shift+D.

PS: Known dock nodes can be selected from farther away, but you need to be ~600m away to press Shift+D
