I don't think so Pointer :(
Much as i'd like to believe this could happen, still.....there seems to be a lot of other new things in X2 so it's no big deal if ya can't... IMO.
Maybe in the future.....maybe..... :)

Oldmans right.
Just think of the sheer strain on the programming, I mean that and the fact that Planets take bloody forever to reach in XT. Only to crash into. Tho I did once try and see how close to the surface I could get while going flat out in an Octopus without crashing. :D
Knock knock. Who's there? Zerg Rushhhhhhhhhhhh!

Reaching the planets could be much easier in X2, we don't know how much has changed compared to X-Tension, one thing is sure though that a lot has changed we didn't expect, like choosing your docking berth inside stations for instance. Or being able to "borrow" cargo laying around in a station.
The strain of programming wouldn't have to be so high if the developers would make it like in Privateer2, that's made out of cutscenes and menus with nice invironments.

Ok just read the Press Release thread.

I supect this will be done using cut scenes, and then work like Privateer, i.e. a little map, and the ability to visit bar's etc.

I doubt we will be able to fly about on planet's.

Maybe we will get to fly down to a landing pad, similar to EFC.

I'm not trying to knock this idea, it would be great, but I think it would take a lot longer to develope the game, if we could fly about on planet's.
And that can only mean more delay's, which is a bad thing.

I agree with ya 100%, and I don't expect being able to fly around in a planet's atmosphere either. Just like you said, more in the likes of Privateer. It would add quite a bit to the game though, knowing you an visit some spaceport on the planets you see.

I'm just excited.

Yeah, I know that there's not much detail to go on yet, but it's starting to come out at a greater pace lately and it's all positive. I'm sure X2 won't be everything to everyone of us, but it looks like there will be lots of great new features.

I hear ya "The_Abyss" X2 will be great to roam around in and discover all the new features. Maybe it won't live up to everybody's expectations (hard to imagine because it will be ten times better then x-tension and that was great allready), but I'm sure that I'll be thrilled when I get my copy.

On the other hand, I don't need to know all the inn's and out's (wich I doubt will happen) before I buy X2, It's good to be surprised when finaly playing the game itself.

Errr....Oldman, I take great pleasure in calling you a dumb pratt!
When are you going to learn to scan ALL the posts in the first page of the forum?
Instead of replying to the very first post that you happen to read why don't you take the frickin' time to see what OTHER posts might ALSO be relevant before you start jumping in with your big gob!
Oh...and BTW...get some decent spectacles will you?, you useless senile old *&"%%$*!

Sheesh!.....I get more stupid as I get older

Good news though, and I wasn't expecting the planet 'connection' in X2.
*wipes away tear of joy* :D

AI "Constructive Cheating"

Post by Aye Capn »

The AI can "cheat" to get information humans would know instinctively and it doesn't break your suspension of disbelief. In particular the AI could "peek" at the player's faction status relative to other ships in the sector.

If an AI sees hostiles in the sector within a certain distance of you, it should assume your weapons fire is directed at them.

If an AI sees nothing but blue skies on your radar and your weapons fire comes within a certain distance it should go hostile. Players will soon learn to check their weapons fire in secured sectors.

If there were some hostiles in the area but now they're gone or out-of-range an AI should give you a few seconds to stop shooting before it freaks out.

An enemy which is already hostile should probably take action as soon as the player gets within a certain distance. I've never played X-T (X-Gold arrives in 3-5 weeks) so I might be way off base here, but Xenon are always hostile, right? So when you creep up behind a Xenon ship that ship knows you're an enemy ... why wouldn't it take immediate measures to defend itself as soon as you get close to weapon range?

The rationale is pretty simple: to keep players from exploiting the AI you want the AI to be very suspicious; on the other hand you don't want friendly AI's turning on players who are fighting nearby (you also don't want the AI to get paranoid right after the last enemy is dispatched -- the pilot needs a couple of seconds to cool down). Weapons fire in the absence of a threat is highly suspicious.

It would be kind of cool if popping off a few stray rounds in a peaceful sector attracted a bunch of attention, like if fighter patrols start shadowing you or if you're within communication range of a station they complain. It shouldn't affect your faction status or anything, it would just be for show. It's analogous to discharging a firearm in the country versus the city. Split the difference for frontier towns -- or X universe space sectors.

I think Iwar 2 had reasonable AI, around stations there was a deadzone where you could not use jumpdrive until you were at a safe distance, if weapons were fired within the deadzone you were hailed by station and defence ships would do a fly by maybe even stop close by (no comms from ships giving warnings though) when answering distress calls the usual scenario was two or three freighters under attack if you approached the melee the fighters would attack but if you waited till attack had finished the enemy fighters would fly away not even noticing your ship :)

A couple of heuristics which may solve the problem of being able to sit on a ship's rear end.

* In the case where you've already attacked, and your intent is clearly hostile, if the protagonist ship max speed > your ship's max speed, don't even try to run.

* In the case where you don't know the intent, introduce a concept of 'comfort zone', etc. Isn't there something like that in Dungeon Siege? Simple as calculating the distance between 2 3d points, and maintaining a timer.
