Suddenly my game is modified - Resolved.

I am playing X4 beta 6 for ... what is it , a week now? and I keep my game up to date automagically, yet this evening, I suddenly came across an option in the game and was pointed to the ventures.. Now I had not read anything about this, but when I got into a weird situation, I did read up.... Ventures are off in the beta 4, so that said, I wanted to know before I knew this why my venture modules were not active, I went into google, ofcourse, found in the settings Steam download which was turned off, and I saved my game, at that point, and turned that option to ON! , ended the game and restarted it..
Now remember, this was before I knew that the beta4 had this option turned of temporarily, I was looking for a problem that was not there.
Anyway, I started the game, and Steam thought it would be nice to push an update through and I went along with it.
Mainmenu gave me the shivers, I was playing with a modified client......... a what now??

you see, turned that steam download off again, but no change, still modified client.... modified client, how do they come up with this stuff.....

I am now searching for turning beta 7 of, use beta 6 again, but that, it looks impossible, the only way is forewards I guess....

Now, I have not modified the game, I have been playing this particular game for about a few weeks now, thinking of it, I usually start it early in the day and end it about midnight, so, I use no mods, no cheats, no changing something somewhere, except my pants, and was kinda baffled that this turned up....

What is this and how can I get rid of it???

Generally the very first thing to do is to verify your game installation. If that does not help then have a read through this thread for ideas.

Is it your game that is showing up as modified, or your saves?

If it's the game itself, then a simple file verification using the Steam client should sort it out. If that doesn't work then something, for example your AV software, is interfering with the game's self-verification.

If it is just specific saves, then there is nothing you can do about it. We have added a warning in the 4.00 release, so that you don't accidentally overwrite unmodified saves with modified ones, but once a save is modified it can't be "de-modified" again.

By my knowledge it is the client, not the save game, that story I went through last year (or before that)
Just now, beta 7 gets pushed, I have instantly a modified client....

One of the things I already did but forgot now if I mentioned it, was verifying my game files.....

No change.... I shall retry this tomorrow and give the AV a notch down, see if that helps, otherwise, i'll report back here with my findings....

Nope, no change....

Maybe is it not better to make this message disappear? not ever show up at all? It surely does not do the job right, so it is now a timely annoyance and that ends up in forgetting it was there, and if at some point people would ask for data if anything in game goes wrong, and forget that this message has showed sometime, sending gamesaves to any of egosoft team, would end up in: "Yeah, we can't do a thing for you, your game is modified"

So, the only way now to have fun, or even try, is start all over, and that is unacceptable from our side of the game, at least, my side it is...
As Egosoft puts hours and hours into this game, so do we, having fun, and actually testing Egosofts game, giving feedback etc...

So, would it not be nice to alter this message into something else? remove the acceptance of using mods in any beta for example? instead of anger people in throwing away a good game play time?
It would be so much better.
So, Ventures is OFF, make MOD-USE also OFF in beta's instead of throwing us in the dark with this gameclient modified, because now it says when I want to load a game from yesterday evening, MODIFIED...
So it goes from a bit weird to really BAD.
I can stop now this game, useless, at all points to even come to the forum to tell about things that happens.....it is a shame, feels like 1985, no internet, no forums, and problems with a game? "So what!" is the unspoken answer to that....

I really don't understand what point you are making. This has nothing whatsoever to do with this being a beta. Nothing has changed in the game, other than that it now warns you if your game is modified so that you don't accidentally overwrite unmodified games with modified ones. That's all.

If you know you have mods installed and don't need to be reminded, then you can turn off the message. If you don't have mods installed and the message is still showing then either your installation of the game is corrupt or something outside the game is preventing it from validating, and the warning is telling you something useful, as explained above.

After this morning I started the game again, you know (previous message) all of a sudden I wanted to jump ship, so let the helm go, waited for the captain to arrive, waiting, take time for coffee, ah, there he is... Now I wanted to click on him, telling to take previous action and resume duties when my eye fell on something in the menu.... a number one option.... CHEAT
Where did this come from?

Now believe me if I say to you in all honesty, I did not do this! and not that I mind at this point because the game is poisened anyway, but a complete cheat menu? I , I don't know? did you guys throw something in?

That CHEAT option is from this mod which must be in your game installation and is marking your game as modified.

maybe you accidently subscribed on steam, dunno if you have to activate mods in your game after you've subscribed as i've not modded X4 yet check your subscriptions though.

steam mod subs are very annoying bc they auto download and update/start mods without any control from you, or you even realizing it happens

I have to install a mod then turn off the steam workshop so they stay and no autoupdate, and when I delete it from extension folder it does not dl it again

Any clue what did this to my game is me being unaware of it. Thanks Buzz2005 for telling me I am not crazy!

oh, and thanks to steam, my game is rendered useless......

I reported this to the mod maker (Honestly I have not used that mod in two or three years ago) and I am now going to try an older savegame..... (First checking if steam is not adding more old mods that I do not want to use during testing, damn!)

What Buzz is saying is that you probably had that mod from Steam at some time in the past, and now Steam Workshop (or maybe Steam Cloud Backup) has (not very helpfully) decided for you that you still wanted it now. Steam will (or at least *should*) not randomly download workshop mods, especially if you had never used their mods before.

I checked again my steam bla bla, and I found no more mods active.
Crossing fingers and hope my old game is still good to go...

Nope, game client still is modified, gonna uninstall X4, remove steam client, restart laptop, install steam, install X4 and go from there....

if you for instance dl a github beta mode for testing and if it has steam workshop instance number there it will see it like you did subscribe to it and even dl the lesser version that is on workshop

its all kind of screwed up

EDIT: in your steam page for x4 workshop unsubscribe from all. mods

yeah, I checked and double cheked that be-atch, and after doing what I told before, started 3.3, there was no message, so a clean vanilla, like I want!
Now the beta 7 try-out.... crossing fingers again...

Update, again:
I managed to do all I told before and the game starts clean, the older savegames from yesterday also give no more client warning, so lets hope it stays this way.
I backed up my saves from feb. 11, so if there is a problem anyway, I can revert to those....

So, I pin this on STEAM..... Thanks to all participants on my topic, it works as far as I can tell now perfect..

.... just one remark, the day before when I had the client modified message?? I used now the savegame, and when I wanted to shut it down, it gave again a modified tag.
Now I am gonna test real quick a day before that, see if that makes a difference.....

Next day I had to go back another day, so now I think all is fine, again... Pity I had to throw away two or almost three days game time....
