Naming of your ships in X4
Enjoy taking the time to name a few special ships, the 3 big ones are called Douglas Adams, Ursula Le Guin and Eden Ahbez, no Yoda yet. My personal ship is called KNOCK KNOCK a Peregrine Vanguard and the first proper fighter was a Falcon called A Need for Integrity. My game character must be getting a bit fat as i kept getting stuck in the cabin space of other fighters...... Enjoying the journey immensely playing the mod Commonwealth No More.

Re: Naming of your ships in X4
Ever since Freespace 2, I continue to name my ships from various Greek mythology (ableit it's sometimes hard as many ships in X-universe already use greek namings).

Re: Naming of your ships in X4
I call my first Fighter the Night Wing after the DC Super hero.
I'll name my first Carrier after the Corporation I named myself (Designed Logo Ragna-Tech Ltd.) Call it the Ragna-One or the Ragnarök, try to base my character around the Terrans that use allot of Norse mythology in the naming of their ship models.
The background of my character is he's the son of Terran refugees, father was a Terran Pilot in the Terran Conflict who became disenfranchised with war and became a trader.
The son becomes a pilot, trained by the Argon Navy, wants to be a mogul so they never have to run again, but also believes in uniting Argon and Terran.

Re: Naming of your ships in X4
I don't really name my ships randomly to things I like.
I name them to their function. Like Nividium Miner 1, Nividium Miner 2, ...
This way I can easily see if I'm missing a ship or not.
the only thing I did give a random name is my company to "Asgard" and made my personal logo to fit the name.

By Last count I have around 2200 ships in my fleet so I stopped naming them a while ago
My personal Nemesis is called SS Holtzman-Cenva. You earn a Spaceweed cookie if you get the reference without googling it

@ Jeremy ,,, well at 2200 ships I would have very few names thrown around,,, as for Holtzman, I can only vaguely remember something from Dune and Inkblots. The Cenva reference has me beaten ...no space cookies coming my way ..
Now I can go Google ....

I name mine like waltz does, based on purpose/load out. Only personal ships get a unique name. I named a colossus after my wife, gave it a pretty paint job
...when I showed her she told me I'm a dork

@birdtable Well that earns you the crumbs from the bottom of the cookie jar at least
The Holtzman effect is the (fictional) science underpinning the interstellar drives, shields and las weapons in Dune. Holtzman and Cenva were its discoverers. I like to name my ships after (real or fictional) scientists.
I did have an Ody destroyer (my first one) named SS Heart of Gold once too, but it was lost in a big battle against the Xenon... at a probability factor of 1 to 7 million against... Apparently the ship's computers were tied up trying to figure out the taste of tea.

Re: Naming of your ships in X4
I name all my ships. In X3 I had 2 wingmen, Jascor and Meracles (made up greek sounding names) so I carried thoe names into X4, but I just name my ships what ever comes to mind at the time. "Big Mamas House", "Dr Dolittle", "Ralf Wigam", "Chief Farts-In-Mouth", "Plasticator", "Creative", "Microsoft", "Apple", "Al Borlan", "Ed McMan", "Ampere", "Scrooge", "Donald", "daffy", "Mouse", "Pluto", "Catdog", "Rocco", "Stimpy", "Ren", .... and the list goes on.
Just... another... bug.

I'd go with the same names I used in the X3 games, they are listed in the following thread. - viewtopic.php?p=2406644#p2406644

My personal fleet command Panther in X3 was always called "Hegemon".
Trying to find a good alternative to it in X4, so far its Behemoth, but I hope for some Split ship.

Re: Naming of your ships in X4
I make sure my Venture ship has as long a name as will fit… Filling the poor recipient with a big fat YELLOW name across there screen.
My personal Ship is Called. “ My Ship “
Many of my ships get names based on there performance,
Bewildered.
Useless.
Dizzy.
Not a clue.
Empty.
This is done during the customary naming ceremony, where the captain gets a meddle nailed into his forehead for being so Bad.

Re: Naming of your ships in X4
Some of the names I want to name my ships have already been taken by the game its self, like Super Dolphin, or Elephant, Vangaurd, so I cant use those cool names as names for my ships.
Just... another... bug.

Re: Naming of your ships in X4
I might name my few primary ships or the lead ship in a fleet. Typically use some type of mythology, or legend. Other than that my ships all have a tag in front of the default name.
Something like if it is a Miner, built from a Teladi station, and its the 3rd saved variant it would be M-T-C. I would like if the variant name could be auto added to the ship name.

Re: Naming of your ships in X4
I tend to only name my capital ships usually after real world ships, or movie space ships. I do have a peregrine called the Rocinante from the expanse as my player ship though.
The rest will have my empire initials, and whatever their tasks. E.g. LIB Mercury (TDR-HUL-001) for hull trader ship 1 etc. I really wish they would let us change the serial number of ships.
For stations i tend to name them after whoever invented the product it produces or famous places for certain goods. e.g. Silicon Valley for computer chips/microchips etc.

I name my destroyers, carriers, and supply ships. Basically the big ships. I named with names that I come up with.

Re: Naming of your ships in X4
Most of my ships are named using the current in-game naming conventions, albeit modified slightly, eg: "Patrol Destroyer Behemoth Vanguard," "Intermediates Trader Tern Sentinel," "Patrol Frigate Gorgon Sentinel" (that last one isn't found in game, frigates are called "fighter squadron,") etc.
However, I have two exceptions; Ships in my major warfleets will be named after their fleet, eg. "Gladius Fleet Behemoth Vanguard," and my personal flagships will have their own personalised names such as my Paranid's carrier, the Aspect of Vengeance

Re: Naming of your ships in X4
I have always enjoyed uniformity and order in games with personalization (Stellaris, for example) and use a similar scheme regardless of game.
(Royal Markov Forces: Civilian, Naval, Defense)
Stations:
Faction name, branch of service, purpose, location. So a station for minerals in Hatikvah III would be:
RMCF/Refinery - Solid HCIII
and a defense station (with compass points for relative sector location) would be:
RMDF/Command Post - North HCIII
Ships:
I use the old x3 number scheme. Capitol ships get actual names, and the rest are just designation and purpose (Rename Fleet mod was a massive saviour for me). Regular fleets use RMNF and defense station fleets use RMDF.
Auxillary:
RMNF/M0 AUX - Hoplon
Carrier:
RMNF/M1 CAR - Trebuchet
Destroyer:
RMNF/M2 DD - Zweihander
Medium:
RMNF/M6 DAC (Drone Assault Carrier)
RMNF/M7 PGS (Plasma Gunship)
RMNF/M8 TAB (Torpedo Assault Boat)
Light: (To differentiate between different fighters, I use the first initial of their chassis name)
RMNF/M5 REC (Recon Scout) So a Discoverer would be RMNF/M5 D REC.
RMNF/M4 INT (Interceptor)
RMNF/M3a CSP (Close Space Patrol)
RMNF/M3b SSF (Space Superiority Fighter)
RMNF/M3c LMF (Light Missile Fighter)
Fleets themselves are done similarly:
RMNF/CFC North (Combined Fleet Command Northern sectors)
Utility ships are a little more simple:
RMCF/TL - M - O (Transport Large Miner Ore)
RMCF/TM - T or MT or S (Transport Medium Trader or Military Transport or Station assigned)
And that is pretty much how I do things.

Re: Naming of your ships in X4
i tend to name my capital ships so they appear where I want them on the list. Carriers = A Tarcon Carrier 01, then 02, 03, etc., B Tarcon Destroyer 01, 02, 03, etc., (Tarcon is the corporate name). Boring I know but is how I find it useful.
