X-BTF/X-tension and Linux?

Post by Rheuhll »

I just got a copy of the Linux program Redhat 8.0 and am going to experiment with it in the weekend.
What i would like to know is if it is possible to get X-BTF/X-tension working under Linux?
I am not happy with the performance of these games under windows 98/me/xp. I tried them all with all kinds of drivers for my Geforce 4MX 460, but for some strange reason X-BTF just won't run fluidly.
Whenever I am near or dock at a spacestation, the FPS become very unstable. They just drop and then speed up again??? It's difficult to explain.
I even tried it with a geforce 2MX GTS Pro and it still had that strange (and irritating) problem. (I even tried it with a 1Ghz/1.2Ghz and a 2.0Ghz)

Someone PLEASE tell me that I can get it to work under Linux (or at least get it to work perfectly under windows).

Does 'Simple Direct Media Layer' (?) emulate DirectX or does it "do its own thing" as it were?

X requires DirectX to run, so it is unlikely you will get it working with a linux operating system without it (or a viable alternative).

But then, i'm no expert. For all i know there is a DirectX available for Linux that i dont know about, lol.

Quake 3 runs under Linux, right?

Does it use Direct X, Open GL or Glide?

Quake III can use atleast two of those, possibly all three, unlike X which only uses DirectX.

There is a Quake 3 version out there that is specifically made for Linux and that one is indeed A LOT faster under Linux than the windoze version. However, you cannot expect XBTF (I doubt you get it to run) to run faster under Linux using an emulator than under Win98. From your description I guess you have some sort of incompatibility in your system. I use a Duron 700 and a GeForce2 MX (old type) and have none of the problems you describe. I believe your problem is DirectX. Update it to version 8.1a should solve those.

You *may* be able to get it running under WINE or VMWARE(??), depending upon whether (as Ap indicates) they support DX or not.

Your frame rate problem is probably not hardware related, it's likely to be software grabbing CPU intermittently, such as firewall or anti-virus. Curiously I had a problem with my MS FF1 on gameport causing frame rate to drop significantly, I replaced it with MS FF2 USB and the problem went.

Try disabling all non-essential software and check how much RAM you have, X can be quite hungry and if you're swapping to disk that could be a cause

I already installed DirectX 8.1 (I think it was the 8.1a version)
Guess I will try it again.
Maybe it's my motherboard **Sigh..*

What about DirectX 9? Does it work with X-BTF/X-tension?

Does anyone know any good Linux (games) Sites?

From what I read on this forum lately STAY AWAY FROM DX9!!!!

As for the linux game sites

http://www.linuxgames.com/

there used to be LokiGames but unfortnately they went broke. These guys converted software like Railroad Tycoon 2, Myst etc. to Linux.

I've long given up trying to start winblows applications on my Mandrake. Anything more complicated than notepad or the ogg vorbis graphic encoder (which, BTW, seems to give slightly better results than the Linux oggenc... might be a version problem) seems to give errors and crash the emulator.
I can't figure the problem for the life of me (::sighs:: I so wanted to run KaZaAlite from Linux...), so I've given up and I'll be keeping my win98SE partition for a long time to come...
