Sometimes missions just appear, if I am cruising the highway and I am looking at shift-m
Sometimes I see yellow marks on the map, fly to them, and then see static in the air and get offered a mission.
Sometimes I see yellow marks on the map, fly around them for an hour, and never find a static thing on the map. Yes, I am scanning.
Sometimes I see red balls instead of static, fly up to them, see "decrypting stream" and then they disappear and nothing happens?
So, what makes them just appear without me having to fly somewhere and scan?
When they are on the map, are they at the location they appear on the map? Not just the station, but the fully zoomed in location? Like the left arm of the station?
I've been looking for this for an hour, and I am zoomed in all the way, right on top of it:

Is there some mechanic preventing me from finding it?
What are the red balls?
And what the heck are the different colors when I am scanning a station? and what good does it do me to have it 100% scanned?
This seem really badly done. I do not enjoy flying in circle for hours trying to find something illusive.

When you see the yellow shields on your map view, right click on it. It will give you a small dialog box with a short description and the ability to accept or open the briefing.
The red balls are various illegal missions, access to the black market at that station missions, and get me off this station missions. If they appear on your map, right click. Otherwise, go up to the red ball and when prompted, press "f".

Wow. You can just right click the missions on the map. There goes 3 hours of my life I'll never get back.

I feel you @3 hrs you'll never get back. When I first started in X4 I was use to the X Rebirth system of using highways and boosters to travel... I did NOT know shift + 1 engaged "travel mode". It took a good minute to travel around before I figured that one out.
One more thing, with you map open, look at the very left hand side. The third box down is "Mission Offers". After clicking on it, observe there are now two boxes on top of the new menu (Guild Mission Offers and Other Mission Offers). Be sure to check both.
Below the mission offer box is Mission Manager with additional boxes on top of the menu box (like before). He sure to check through all those as well.
