I've seen people complain about ui elements in x4 especially at the beginning, but some of my friends actually liked it. And I think "why" comes to controls you are using, keyboard shortcuts vs mouse. Navigating main menus via mouse only is definitely feels awkward at first.
But my personal complain after few days of playing x4 is mutually exclusive tabs. Mainly the Info tab that contains 95% of information, ship cargo, orders, crew etc. If you want to check multiple ships, you stuck constantly switching between property and info tabs. I think ui designers went the right direction by distributing some of the info tab content on the map. But there is no option for displaying cargo on your own ships at the moment.
My proposals is to make vital information like ship cargo visible on property tab, or easily accessible from property tab. Maybe even making info tab not mutually exclusive with everything else.

I agree with you !
Mostly the UI is great, at least to me. But that would be a nice improvement.

Someone suggested displaying info and behaviour tables side-by-side, I think that would be great - less clicks!

Re: UI critic
I was almost annoyed when I realized there was no cargo/freight button as in previous games, until I realized there is next to no reason for a player to use it aside from dropping illegal cargo. At least the player inventory is easy to find. The info tab is just a little too dense, I think. Maybe break up some of that info and make it a little bigger.
Also, we need behavior presets!

Yes, having to constantly muck with ownership menu, information menu, behaviour menu is a chore
There needs to be a short summary of cargo and current destination visible when you highlight a ship
