Is it okay to release an optimization mod containing the original textures?

Post by VapeMom69 »

Is that a thing? I kept running out of vram in asteroid-heavy sectors so I went and resized/optimized their textures. Is it ok to upload them somewhere? It's not, right? Is it...?

It's always been done extensively with pretty much every big game, I know of no company that ever complained about it, so I'd say go ahead.

BTW: lightweight optimized retextures and remodels of asteroids - among other things - have also been done for previous X titles, and no issues were raised for them as well.

As Kadatherion said, it's a pretty standard thing for mods to reuse textures so I wouldn't worry about it. It's possible you will never receive an official response however, since companies are generally leery of saying anything that could be interpreted as releasing rights to their intellectual property.

As long as u're not using their assets for other games, they'll prolly rather encourage you to use them to create content for the game. :)

A general rule for modified (not Unique) texture mods:
1] Do not claim them as your own.
2] Do not use them in any capacity beyond their original intended use. (IE don't import them to Minecraft etc)
3] Do not alter files in such a way as to bypass a paywall(such as buying a game) or licence.
4] Do not extract or modify anything considered "Trademarked" or "unique" to a branding. IE Extracting and modifying a Ubisoft logo from an assassins creed game and then defacing it negatively might prompt a company response.

If you meet those few restrictions almost no one will care if you modify them. Pretty much just doing a texture resize limits the modification to X4 exclusively as you must own the game to utilize the texture.

Just to echo the above and lend another voice of support for your up and coming mod :) I can't think of a company that actively supports (by which knowing, allowing and supporting them in the official forums and praising them) customers modding the game that doesn't let you use assets from the game if used only for the purposes of in the game and not doing anything that would otherwise breach Intellectual Property, Copyright, or any other law etc. etc.

Optimisation is always welcome :D
