They said each game start has unique mini plot arcs of sorts that's what I was referring to, I know some areas will be shared like getting teleporter, but u can't play one start and experience all the story missions as they will be locked to different starts from what they said. Or did we hear wrong? If one game has all story content then cool but its not what I heard AFAIK.

I think they were referring to something like the Tormented Teladi and Poisoned Paranid starts in TC/AP. Those 'mini-plots' were unrelated to any of the main plots.

All regular plots were open to any of the different gamestarts, although there may have been slight differences in how they began (eg. the Terran plot in TC where it started differently depending on whether you were a Terran or Commonwealth pilot).
Have a great idea for the current or a future game? You can post it in the [L3+] Ideas forum.

I'm guessing that every start will allow you a route to the essential/unique game progress items (XR examples: SETA, jumpdrive, etc and now teleporters). Each start will also give you access to 'equivalent' early game ships, weapons, etc and eventually allow you to amass sufficient funds to buy (or maybe to steal instead) whatever else you might need to progress and branch out later on.

Well I'm willing to see how it turns out come release date. I was just worried I "might" be locked from some content I was wanting to play on a single play through on the one game start is all. Sorry if it seemed I was over complaining on it.

Practically everything in this game would be impossible if there was a campaign mode, having a campaign with key locations such as stations and having those stations being destroyed would resolute in the campaign being non continuable.

I can see that they could add a campaign mode that disables warfare and faction progression and having it enabled at the end of the game.

They already stated at the presentation some plot object will be indestructible.

I' glad this will have a plot (Actually, it never occurred to me that it wouldn't). Sure it's not specific to a character, but that's fine and to be expected.

A pure sandbox is really not my idea of fun, I need something to push me along (and then conveniently ignore whilst I amass wealth and an Empire).

I hope they focus on the gameplay and engine first and make it solid.
Justr have some Missions for us to get into the world.

Then...as they always tend to do...bring in more and more mysteries and stories via big patches and DLC.

@EGOSOFT:

Don´t try to do it all at once...you are not a big enough developer for that...
I am wishing you all the best and am really looking forward to a REAL X experience! :)

As I really suck at the start (well, probably I'm bad in all parts of the games), but still really love the X series, I would love a campaign (or more than one) to help set me up. Actually I liked X3:TC's campaign progressions the best so far. It introduced lots of cool player tech, which you could use when you were done with it, thus basically you had a less rough start.

That is true. Terran Conflict was great from that perspective. I also loved how they added more and more to do via Patches/DLC.

To clarify: the approach we're taking with X4 is similar to that of Terran Conflict and Albion Prelude: multiple game-starts which put you in the shoes of different characters, each with their own smaller stories, as well as story lines that you can come across in multiple or all gamestarts.

As far as the "lore vs story" discussion goes, I will say this. Finding new ways to put across the lore of our very beloved universe is something we're alwys looking to do - it's always something we can improve on. I hope that we'll continue this trend with X4.

Generally, I'm happy with where we're at with the story of X4, both overarching and in-game, and am really excited to start proper work on it.
Sounds great, I do prefer less of the hand-holding, but still having interesting "plots" emerge that I can decide to take part in or not, at whatever moment. Sometimes I just like to drift around space admiring the views, or sit in a map screen for hours watching my traders making some money and diverting them away from danger :)

I found that in X:R with the story campaign mode, it was too much "go here do this go there do that" and if you wanted to explore outside of it or diverge from the 'story' there were so many bugs or possible things to go wrong that it just didn't work lol. The individual game starts were way more fun and I could make my own story, rebel against the corporations and become a pirate, trade my way to billions, build up a fleet and take on the xenon... whatever I wanted at any point. Not being stuck to a certain mission telling me where to go or what to do!

I'm the opposite, I'd want to be led around busy doing things to advance the story as I wana see the end before the sandbox part starts for me. Its nice to meet plot characters to talk to be given cool missions like escort a escaping convoy from intruders then go find where there coming from and report it to HQ. Like the story from fs2 or starlancer for example. Then when its over I can mess about with doing stuff tho not too bothered if I don't play sandbox as I'd get my fill from the campaign story if it was long (20hrs worth I hope) and satisfying.

Saying that I don't mind if a missions too hard I need a better ship or equipment then I can try get that before next mission starts.

Glad to hear they're going for multiple game starts. Thoroughly enjoyed this facet of the old games, particularly the starts where I was essentially shoot on sight for most of the major factions or, if not hated by everyone, at least dumped in the middle of a sector surrounded by a vast horde of hostiles (e.g. Enemy of the State, Khaak Invader, Lost Lar, etc). Hope something like that will be available in X4.

What was great & different of other games with X series was the huge sandbox given to players imo.

Personally, I am not fan of long plots.

The only thing I hope is that key features in the game will not be availble through a Plot (like teleportation...)

Different game starts yes,
Plots, why not if they can be avoided for the ones who are not fan of them

I have not played the XR plot completely through yet. So, that shows. I am a big RPG fan though and i do love small plots to get unique stuff or discover secret sectors in X games.

X-Rebirth plot was OK with the exception that all arcs end up with cliffhanger that is not followed in next arc nor completed in campaign end.
This leave terrible after taste.

Yes I feel the same, the problem was that it was just ok and the cliffhanger part. The fact that it was voiceovered improved it by a lot ( at lest for me ) despite the fact that the voice over was not amazing but still ok .
