Litcube's Universe BSOD [Solved]

Post by Insigar »

Hello everyone,

after some time playing I usually get a complete freeze. The sound gets stuck and I have to restart my PC. It seems random since it always happened while flying around, and always in different sectors. Sometimes there were huge fleets battling, sometimes just a dozen ships flying around.

Gameversion: Steam AP 3.1 English
Mods: Litcube's Universe 1.7.0 + EMS + Mayhem 1.11

A BSOD is caused by something more than just a problem with the game. The game itself can't trigger that kind of crash; only Windows and things like your drivers can do that. The message on the BSOD screen usually contains some clues as to where the problem lies.

I don't get a BSOD Screen, only when I restart the PC there's a popup telling me I had a Bluescreen. I took a look into the event viewer and the only error I get there is "Driver ACPI returned invalid ID for a child device (5).". Since I only get BSODs with AP I thought it might be something caused by the game.

Edit: Bluescreenviewer tells me it's caused by ntoskrnl.exe with the Bug Check Code 0x00000116.

Edit 2: Also in the Eventviewer there seems to be an error regarding d3d9.dll in the Gamefolder.

The reason you don't see the bluescreen is that your system is configured to automatically restart when you get that kind of error. You can switch that off, then you will see the bluescreen message itself.

Regarding the error itself, it's a bit difficult to tell from the information you've provided, but the messages you mention do confirm that there is something not quite right with your system. Whether it's with Windows itself, DirectX, or a device driver is unclear, as the three messages you mention all suggest different answers.

The fact that you only get the BSODs while playing X3AP just means that only X3AP happens to trigger the conditions necessary to expose whatever problem you have, not that the game is actually causing that problem.

Disable automatic restart, temporarily at least, so that you can see exactly which error it is that's happening while you're playing.

That suggests a memory fault. Your next step would be to take out one stick of RAM at a time and see whether one particular one not being in your system solves the problem.

I can say now that it's definitely not the RAM. It's also not the Haali Media Splitter which caused problems for others. I removed it completely and still get the BSOD.

Other than memory issues, and since you are not overclocked, the most likely issue remaining is a driver.

Please run a 64 bit DxDiag and see if your sound and graphics drivers are the latest WHQL-approved ones for Win7 x64.

Terre often recommends running an Intel Update tool that checks your Intel chipset drivers are all up to date.

Ran the DxDiag and drivers are WHQL-approved. The Intel Update tool only showed me an USB 3.0 driver that already had the latest version installed. I also tried updating all drivers with DriverBooster (showed me 21 outdated drivers). Still freezing

The sound getting stuck could have something to do with the mod you're using. Can you reproduce the issue in a vanilla game?
Have a great idea for the current or a future game? You can post it in the [L3+] Ideas forum.

Sound getting stuck is almost always a result of a crash, not its cause. It's the sound card looping over the last sample it was given to work with, when its requests for something new to play receive no response because the application that's supposed to provide that response, or indeed the system as a whole, has crashed. While it's possible that there is a sound-related issue, don't take stuck sound as evidence of this.

Previously you were talking about BSOD crashes. Now you are talking about the PC freezing. Have the symptoms changed, suggesting we've moved on from the original problem to a new one, or are you just using different words to describe what's happening? A complete PC lockup is something else that a game can't do on its own, without some help from a fault deeper in the system, but it's still not the same as a BSOD.

It also happens in vanilla AP.

I probably just failed to describe it properly. Sorry about that. Basically the whole PC is freezing with a soundloop and after restarting I get a popup saying I got a bluescreen. The reason I'm assuming it's only this game causing it is that I can play other games (Witcher 3, Rocket League, X Rebirth, Black Desert, CS:GO) just fine for hours.

Different games stress your PC in different ways. It's perfectly possible for the PC to work fine in some games and then crash with one particular game. You only have to take a look at the release notes for your graphics card drivers to see all the game-specific faults they fix each time.

Anyway, that's beside the point. A complete lockup is a little different to a bluescreen error, and I've seen a few cases where a mod or a corrupt game installation could have that result. You should do a client file verification on Steam for both X3AP and X3TC, and also check that you don't have any X3TC mods installed as they can interfere with X3AP.

Completely reinstalled from scratch, verified again just to be sure. Went smoothly for about an hour. Then it happened again.

I assume that when you're reinstalling, you're starting a fresh game and playing that, rather than loading old savegames that might have bits of mods still left in them. If not then you need to. Otherwise the fact that it takes a while to happen does tend to point back towards a possible memory issue, as playing the game for a while will use more memory than playing for a short time, as the game caches as much data as it can. When you said earlier that it's definitely not the RAM, was that just an assertion or did you try the steps I suggested?

The other possibilities that spring to mind for a full-system hang are heat and power. The former is generally less of an issue these days because processors have throttling, but it is still possible. Power is a much harder issue to deal with because identifying and diagnosing a fault with a power supply is really tricky. Oh, and one other question: have you updated your BIOS recently?

Always a starting a new game. I followed your advice and tested it with only one RAM stick at a time. Also ran a memtest now (6 simultaneous instances with 2GB each, 100% coverage) and not a single error. Heat shouldn't be a problem. I checked it with HWMonitor and nothing went above 70 °C. I don't think it's a power shortage either. Got a 650W PSU and checked how much I needed with http://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator. Told me I need around 560W. The last time I updated my BIOS was a few months ago.

Edit: Seems like my PC is dying. Everything running slow, winrar crashing and 5 minutes to restart. Gonna reinstall Windows and we'll see if something changes.

A power shortage wouldn't necessarily be the issue. I've seen a number of cases with similar symptoms where the problem turned out to be the PSU turning out spikes or dips on one of more of its power rails, resulting in some components not getting enough power for just long enough to cause a system freeze. I'm not saying this is definitely the cause, or indeed even necessarily that it is the most likely cause, but it's a possibility.

You say you updated your BIOS a couple of months ago. Did that coincide with when this problem started?

I can't say for sure that the update has anything to with it since I only started playing X a few days ago. The BIOS update fixed another error I had at the time.

Edit: Reinstalled Windows now and tried launching AP with a single core (read somewhere a few years ago that it might help) by editing my shortcut's target path to: C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /C start "X3: Albion Prelude" /affinity 3 "C:\Program Files (x86)\Egosoft\x3 terran conflict\X3AP_n.exe". Not sure what fixed it but it ran for 2 hours straight without a single freeze, crash or bluescreen. It's stuttering in a few sectors but that's ok. Thanks everyone for the help.

Edit 2: Played for 3 and a half hours today. Definitely solved.
