Is loading X Rebirth on two computers possible?

Post by Europica »

Hi all

I used to have X Rebirth on my pc and laptop. However, I had to reinstall it on my laptop and now I' getting a steam msg saying I have a duplicate cd key. Is there anyway I can resolve to have the game on both machines? I like to have in on the fly, so to speak. many thanks for your help.

Yes it's possible, but I don't know the details exactly. You must install Steam on your 2nd computer and also activate from there. I think you can then even transfer the files (not sure, I did never try this).
You should get help in the Steam Support for this.

You can directly transfer the game files from one steam folder to the other, and avoid having to re-download most of the data (it will usually still downloads a few hundred mb to patch up anything that didn't transfer properly)

As for owning the game on 2 pc, I don't know. I've done it with other games without any issues, so but "world of goo" ain't exaclty as developped as X-rebirth, so maybe there's some issues with more "secure" games.

In any case, it's probably more a question for steam support.

As far as I know, you can install your Steam library onto as many different systems as you like. However, you can only then activate (transfer) your Steam online account onto whichever system you want to play on next.

What you must *never* do is play your game on more than one system at the same time from the same account as that (if you somehow make it happen) contravenes the Steam licence and bad things could happen to your account!

You also shouldn't need to enter a Steam key again, so shouldn't see a duplicate key message. If you install Steam on any system, and log in with your Steam account that you've installed your games to, all your games should be displayed in your library without the need to enter any keys.

Hello there.

You can install your steam account on to as many computers as you want (as Alan Phipps states), and you can even run the same steam account on more than one machine at the same time (used for streaming). If you have Steam cloud activated it should even transfer your savefiles between each computer.

1) What you can not however:
Play a game on two computers at the same time (unless streaming, which isnt quite the same). I think this even counts if you play 2 different games on the computers.

2) Use the same Steam Key on 2 different accounts.

So, if you have a different log in for you laptop than you use on your stationary, then you would have a problem. Log on to same account on both computers, and you will be fine. Just dont attempt to start a game on both computers ;-)

Thanks for all your help folks. Problems solved by logging into steam on the same account on both machines.

yes you can, make sure you got steam on both machines, load the game on both, the save game files are located in your document folder under egosoft.

Steam is a service that you use to buy stuff. Once you activate a single key on your account - it's yours for life, no matter which PC you use (yes, it can even be someone else's).

However, Steam uses DRM which means you can never play your owned games without Steam itself. So like mentioned, you need install steam, log into it with your account and all your games will be available.

To avoid redownloading the whole game you could copy X:R files (found in your steam folder\steamapps\common\ to your 2nd pc/laptop in the same place.

Once you hit the install button, Steam will start looking for existing files and just skipp the whole download proces. If you have steam cloud enabled for a specific game, all your saves will be there automagically. If not - copy them from your Documents\Egosoft folder.

No need to respond to a two month old thread that has already been successfully resolved.
