Thanks for the Free Weekend EGOSOFT!!

Post by donzi »

-------------------------------------------------
NOTE : without butchering the message I want to clarify any reference to low FPS, stutter, crash, etc is because of my misunderstanding / oversight as relayed here.
-------------------------------------------------

I may have missed one of these before but I managed to catch this free weekend right off the bat - clocked over 11 hours so far. Although it's certain that I won't have the fortitude or time to get all the achievements on this free trial time it's kind of a nice surprise that they're able to be earned, I guess.

I've been limited to a rather poor mid-range system (stock 2011 iMac 21" w/bootcamp and W7 x64) which seems to be -okay- for a great deal of my game playing.

It's right along the min reqs for Rebirth with a 4-core i5. I'm not sure if I can handle much more though since station exploring has become extremely too slow -- dips into the 1 frame per many seconds which is just unbarable. Sitting for a bit waiting for the system to catch up seems to help, but it's onlly very temporary.

Space is MUCH better and highways are workable most of the time.

At 1280x720, I've pretty much dropped everything to the off/lowest settings now. Last ditch efforts will be to tweak the LOD settings and try some smaller 4:3 resolutions if possible..

Nothing much going on in the background but will be auditing that soon enough -- as the designated game system I don't bother with any AV software either.

The one hog on the system though, aside from explorer.exe is steam and all the extra helpers it's got these days.. While it doesn't seem to be hitting the cpu much, it can sit there doing nothing with nearly 400MiB memory consumption.

..I suppose a "NO STEAM" for Rebirth from egosoft as other X games have will be forthcoming? ..may not help that much anyhow I suppose. Although I am not 100%, I am assuming Rebirth has evolved as the first steam only/required title..?

With any luck I'll be able to come up with a more workable configuration so I can learn the game more and perhaps commit to a purchase before the weekend expires.. Still a lot of deer in the headlights with this one so far just discovering what is and isn't possible with regard to my prior experiences with prior X titles.

If nothing else, I am feeling like revisting X2 or reunions again now. :-)

Anyhow, thanks again!

This game is GORGEOUS when run on a more powerful machine. It's well worth £11.50 by a long way, and if you manage to upgrade any time in the next year or two you'll also want to revisit this and whack everything on max settings to play all over again ;)

no, it doesnt worth £11.50. its just your view it does. X3 still looks better and plays better... i wonder why your kind feels entitled to mislead others into buying this turd. i have a power pc and this game is everything but gorgeous. still full of bugs and crap design, just a few

-its still freaking ugly
-autopilot is useless, it cant even fly straight and its like complete utter rubbish in finding its way through highways
-autopilot bumped into the ship i was following, i ended up inside its hull
-while using menus or talking nothing else (like controls/warnings) are working
-if police get me with illegal wares not only me but my entire faction will be enemies for them
-police scanned me and the entire stations started shooting me without warning
-menus are still crap, slow and overcomplicated. ohh, and ugly
-autopilot doesnt disengage if i try to maneuvre. even today's autopilots do it
-fps control is still too fast for walking and there is no running
-inverting FP updown in settings doesnt work
-if you tell the captain of your capital to "take me there..." and enter the skunk while the capital is on the move it will just bump you dead
-it shows random ships around stations as enemies but if i shoot them everybody becomes enemies
-funny graphical glitches and random teleports with autopilot (in one moment i was 70km away in the next moment i was 14km away)
-i still killed the biggest capital with the totally basic skunk

and yeah, i will tell it always to everybody because this game is just here to cheat gullible ppl

And it's just your view it doesn't. BlackDemon merely stated his own oppinion, which last time I checked, everyone is entitled to on this forum.

According to your own posts you haven't played this game since release and have just tested it for half an hour now. Yet you still feel you can make a reasonable recommendation, as to whether to buy it or not?! Yeah sure, so much for misleading others.

@Luanda - All of your points are completely and utterly false. I don't even have the inclination to reply to each of them individually because you've literally just pulled rubbish out of your backside.

Seems like you're a bit jealous that some of us enjoy this game, and YES it IS well worth £11.50. Just because you have no idea how to play, doesn't mean it's a bad game.

Go back to X3 then, and stop posting on this forum, since you clearly have no factual input to give.

And as stated above me, you've barely even played this game once. So please stop before you hurt yourself ^_^

As Terre said, don't start an argument between yourselves. You can voice your opinions but downright labling them false isn't going to help the topic, it'll just end up locked.

I will say, some of those issues listed are known bugs (some of which should be fixed for the next build).

In all X games, I want to add.
Not just in Rebirth.

Running is already there, double-tap W.

Well I've doubled the 11 hours now.. This doesn't seem to be cpu bound on my system.. but rather more the game gobbles up all my RAM (4GiB) and then some.

I expect the massive frame rate drops which set in after a while are due to pagefile being constantly used. Apple iMac is basically a notebook class system stuck on a desktop sort package -- hence the HDD (or anything else in these toasters) isn't performance oriented.

After 4 1/2 hours playing I ALT-TAB to desktop and checked on the xrebirth.exe process with process hacker:

-memory-
private bytes 4.12 GB
peak pvt bytes 4.31 GB
virtual size 4.39 GB
peak virtual size 4.58 GB
page faults 5,464,072
working set 1.83 GB
..
peak working set 3.36 GB
..and a bunch of other stuff.

Maybe some patch to the game to more efficiently use windows prefetch or perhaps some sort of memory 'leak' is at work.

I do know that the game works the worst in stations once passing through the first door once ram has been gobbled up. Another constant lag is the cockpit door transition in/or out is lagged by many seconds.. flying though is good.

Stations and everywhere else is good for a while after a fresh start at 1280x720, even at 1920x1080 it's workable with all custom graphics settings off or lowest. Might actually be something with entering stations many times is hastening the slowdown/memory maxing.

I've never seen the CPU beyind 25-26%, which the game stays at while ALT-TAB'd to desktop.

Also, seems if alt-tab desktop and do something to which causes xrebirth to release it's RAM use, then going back into the game will be just about like a fresh start of the game -- speedy and all again without quiting the game and restarting it.

General thoughts so far..

Rebirth is interesting and fun until things go slow-mo in the stations and I have to exit and restart the game.

I always wanted to walking around in something in previous X games. The space walks were a good substitute in a way, but the first person moving about in Rebirth is great. Heck we can even jump. Many lousey AAA titles with tons of walking don't even have that. The stations are well done I think, although pretty damn dark in places. Could use a flashlight.

I am sad to see the test flight simulator elements that'd been in X since X2 where the player can fly all sorts of craft gone. But this is 'Rebirth' and just a newborn at that.

Egosoft has a plan and hopefully this first game of the new plan isn't the last.

I can't think of another game developer who has galvanized their love and dedication for the space sandbox, flight sim, economic sim, etc as much as Egosoft.

I hope the addition of steam workshop, steambox/steamos really expands on their fan base. I hate to see the game creep towards mainstream console to the extent rebirth shows, but I can also thank them for holding out as long as they did. ;-) ..and that the extent which Rebirth has been massaged for console hasn't completely ignored the PC like some developers do.

Maybe I am off base here, but seems the rebirth has more to do with biting the bullet and sacrificing a certain bit of the PC features so that the series could make a better living room experience than would be possible without the sweeping chamges. Coupled with the apparent ease of gamers using steamworks and 1-click install/uninstall of (still scripts?) mods seems, well, makes sense.

I wish that the PC + windows was still the dominant platform so developer freedom wasn't complicated or hindered by 10-foot suitable GUI, lower complexity GUI, etc.. I don't think that I'll ever be able to shake the mouse keyboard nor be able to mirgate that control to a gamepad. Partly because I don't want to. After 25+ years I just don't see that I'll ever be able to re-wire my head to clutch onto a controller for the same purpose I use a mouse and keyboard for.

Is there any game which provides a similar AI world on a simple PC and has also the million $ budget to cover it with top 10 good looks too?

If I ever win the lottery and could afford to give huge amounts of money, egosoft is a company I would like to see operate without $ factors -- hire additional talents, form their own private publishing department, not have to worry about cash.. and see what happens. The other thing would be to fund a TV commercial campaign that is complete satire of the junk commercials and shows which led me to quit my TV services.

Surly you're aware the autopilot has/is a YMMV feature, particularly in congested situations. So far it's not caused me much harm.. at least nothing I needed to pay for. :-)

..try it without collision avoidance on and see how it works. Maybe that is how you got inside the lead ship's hull? lol.

The AP has gotten better over the series though. Highways are pretty easy to navigate anyhow, why bother with it within them?

I like the suggestion on the auto disengage you have made. Would be a decent -option- but at the same time it's nice to be able to strafe with the AP on too.

I've taken out red ship in various faction spaces and it seems to work as expected.. Perhaps you're hitting a station or non red ship too many times for them to consider it an accident?

I have outrun police during a scan and the sector remained calm. Typically I am just looking for a merchant to sell the stuff off before leaving.. or boosting the ship to the next docking port ASAP to avoid scans, looking for a merchant to buy my illegal stuff. Too poor to just drop the items. :-)

It may be that not letting the cops actually find any illegal items (racing away) is a more forgivable 'crime' than just sitting there and letting them shaft you.
Luanda wrote: -while using menus or talking nothing else (like controls/warnings) are working

I am fumbling with the menus myself still. Then again I have not poured over any additional info that is probably required reading. The manual (X_Rebirth_Manual_English.pdf) is lacking a lot of info that I'd imagine is helpful.

I've not even scratched the surface of whatever learning curve rebirth has. It's not like the new user experience can really teach beyond basics here (or ever has in X2/X3..) -- and that's a chore in itself given that the game is still more complex than most others.

One of the biggest and most important things egosoft should make SUPER CLEAR to the campaign player (it was actually very clear in one of the X3 line or maybe X2, forget) is that campaign needs big blinking neon lights and all "DISEMBARK FROM PLOT NOW" -- "we'll wait for you"

..this is essential and should be crystal clear to players who are often going to assume that following the plot, as with other games, is the way to play the game.
Luanda wrote: -if you tell the captain of your capital to "take me there..." and enter the skunk while the capital is on the move it will just bump you dead

..agreed, when I haven't lagged out due to the memory overload as my previous message, walking is pretty fast when working in close quarters.

As Earth Ultimatum IV. mentioned though, there is a run feature.

I've sort of got the hang of the crouch-jump. It seems to be as such FYI:
-doesn't jump higher as one might be expecting
-jump then lifting legs (crouching) affords the extra height.. more like jumping and using arms to pull up, only without that sort of animation or outward appearance otherwise.
Luanda wrote: -i still killed the biggest capital with the totally basic skunk
You are the man! ..what's a capitol ship? ;-) I'm still unsure what the freighter I have is. Restarted since apparently it will be lost if following plot and not sending it off to a safe place or job.

Wow. If you honestly think the prime objective of the rebirth project was to swindle people.. no comment. Speaks for itself.

well, in X3 the stationconnection was rubbish, but the stations looked fairly dont even mention that they were clear and simple to identify, now its just a big mess of colorful boxes. and still these are the best looking things in this game. (ok, except some really nice cap ships) what my real problem is the crap ugly specular shaders. those should be removed and changed to some simple diffuse shaders with some fair lightning and colors and it will not burn out my eyes and it will run 90% better. it feels like everything has the exact same color inside stations or inside the skunk
Is there any game which provides a similar AI world on a simple PC and has also the million $ budget to cover it with top 10 good looks too?
sure there are. actually in x3 i used my own scripted traders to run my systems perfectly. i wrote not a few but many AI scripts which were doing complex stuff far better than any ego scripts do

no, i ended up in the lead ship because nothing is working, especially not the AP when an NPC is talking. incredible. if you use any menus or somebody is talking to you the skunk flies through the highways without entering them, flies through other ships etc
The AP has gotten better over the series though. Highways are pretty easy to navigate anyhow, why bother with it within them?
I have AP to tell it to fly to there from here and i dont want to manage it because it cant find its way into the highway. actually it always stopped for me when exited one and i had to deactivate/activate it or sometimes even fly a bit before reactivating it to make it working again.
I like the suggestion on the auto disengage you have made. Would be a decent -option- but at the same time it's nice to be able to strafe with the AP on too.

i wasnt looking for the police, i was in the menu, i've heard the siren but i didnt care, i didnt even know i have illegal stuff on my ship, im not checking my cargo all the time for it. when i exited the menu i saw the policeship following me all the way, no warning or chat and after a couple of seconds it just started to shoot me and without me shooting back the station and everybody around turned red and started to shoot me... sure i run away but i was trading and just saw my rahanas appearing for the stuff i bought and it went down in seconds because it was also attacked by the station. who is that r******* captain of any ships goes to an enemy station and why my capital ship which did nothing wrong is their enemy because i had a hacker chip in my pocket?

yeah, the most unintuitive way... double tap w, omg. normally it should be like ctrl sneak shift run and set a normal walk speed as default (and can even add capslock to switch between modes) not this half running something. many times i tried to go close to a container and ended up on its top...

its not about being the man, its ridiculous. a ship in skunk size shouldnt even be able to scratch the shields of a capital (not capitol lol). same with stations. ok, weapons and modules could have their own shieldprojector which are small enough so with a good enough gun you can shoot it through to disable modules but the main shieldgenerator should just hold back the skunk or other fighters just from recharge rate. (it wouldnt protect from a fleet of fighters but taking them down with a single fighter is just not fun) the same way the stations hull should have a shield so missing targets around station with a fighter sized gun wouldnt bother the station/capital itself anymore... ohh, forgot to tell but also crap if you shoot a ship but not you take the final blow you get nothing for it? haha...

no it wasnt, it was meant to be a casual xbox spaceshooter but it failed and it became a crappy pc port had to be shoveled out and thats what i honestly think...

Luanda,

I appreciate you reply. I am still pretty lost in Xrebirth.. Much of what you've been able to do I have not even figured out yet.

However! I did contribute to a big capitol ship explosion. The station was also hammering it with turrets and there were no enemy fighters around to defend the thing so I was able to plink away at it and got a little credit for the station defense -- then the game locked up. lol, sigh.

You have more experience in the graphics than I do.. The fact that I cannot use anything above off and low at low resolution sort of stinks but that is the cards I've been dealt, for now.

Clearly you're a fan of egosoft from prior play in X3. TBH, X2 and X3:R remain my favortites -- they too were/are pretty rough around the edges. Yet, they're a ton of fun and patches and user mods have really made a huge difference.

AFAIK, unlike some developes, egosoft is thinking of the past, current and next installement of X, all the time. :-) ..not tangenting to do some filler project like the episodic mini games or otherwise.. That counts for something, commendable and rare as hen's teeth.

I sort of liken the apparent fiaso of rebirth's launch and reception to a kid who gets into big trouble... do you cast them aside, brow beat them for the rest of their life or move forward and use the experience in a positive way. I tend to think egosoft is trying.. I venture to say they don't desire the beatings to maintain their apparent thick skin.

I understand not being comfortable reccomending this product. It's too early for me to digest 'to who' and how I would reccomend rebirth. X2 onward always required obligatory "you -must- invenst lots of time, read and learn to enjoy" bias.. all things considered I respect the people who brought us rebirth and prior X games so I dropped some money on the CE edition so I could at least contribute a little cash their way and finally begin to participate here as an owner.

Each step (x2 to x3r, etc) seemed to rub people the wrong way but in time I guess they either bailed or didn't. I waited on Xrebirth until now, I went ahead and bought it despite that the game predictably becomes unplayable -- due to IMO game or the 'Elephant Memory' code bugs. However, maybe I can help egosoft by providing info to fix something.

I figure that egosoft jumped into rebirth knowing it was going to cause some fans grief. I'm not sure I can welcome all the changes without reservations or even anger but this is the result of the company.. Like it or not, I think egosoft is still getting their sea-legs with this one.. AFAIK, this was quite a undertaking like starting from scratch in some areas. EG: being 64-bit only, steam integration, paving the path to linux and so forth.

Eventhough the FPS elements may not be a big hit with everyone, I secretly (?) yearned for walking around stations and huge ships since X2. ;-) I really think they've done a great job with it, particularly as an entirely new feature. Few quirks here and there but nothing major IMO.

I have and will continue to expand a laundry list of gripes with this game. It's enjoyable for me anyhow -- rebirth is different and has captured my interest enough to spend some 30+ hours so far. (despite the fact that I have to exit and restart it from time to time in order to play without it going to hell)

At the end of the day, if egosoft went poof I'd be damn glad I'd stumbled upon their games and could happily revisit all their titles. I dread the thought of the IP of egosoft become an EA or Ubisoft asset. It's a short list of developers which could carry the X torch IMO. But I digress, I hope egosoft can keep doing their thing and we all can get over this hump. Deserved or not, it stinks the way steam puts metacritic out front. Maybe it's better since it's an average but as in the past, professional reviews in trade magazines are worthless as a primary criteria for decisions. Problem is they are plastered all over steam. It least they could display the user score (also somewhat worthless) side by side.

hell yeah, i quite understand what you feel, but i guess its sentiment caused by the older x games. i wished so much this game to succeed and probably thats why im so angry on it. i was waiting for it so much. many ppl here say wait for elite or star citizen, i cant care, those are completely different games. i was waiting for nearly a decade and i thought when it finally comes it will at least not have the same silly mistakes and flaws the x3 games did. like the stupid like hell AI. i've pre-ordered, i never ever buy a game without trying it and i pre-ordered this one because i dont care of bugs, i knew it will be riddled of bugs but what they did to this game is not acceptable for me in any form. not just that the ai wasnt fixed and they ridiculously messed up the graphics with that silly overall shininess and the ugly and stupidly moving characters, the lightnings can burn the eyes of an average man in a few hours, they messed the control, they have made an ugly and slow menu... these are things doesnt depend on engine or time, these are wrong choices. choices they had 25 years of experience and fan input here on the forum...

they knew 1 ship is not a successful option, that was shown back in x2 times, so why? but its ok. i knew it, i accepted it... gravidar. they just forgot it. ok added it finally but still its wrong, the plane is fixed to the coordinate system not to the ship. its annoying. and it shows the directions completely wrong anyway. FP controls. simple as hell. if you have ever played FPS or RPG you know how to control an FP character. it seems ego has never played... pathfinding, base of every single game which has npcs. doesnt matter if its fps or space sim or car racing or whatever, if you cant make it right, dont do it. its impossible to fight fighters around the station because they get stuck on it all the time and if you shoot and miss them the station will attack you. why those craps after 8.5 years of working still cant maneuvre around the stationcomplexes? absolute basics. im a developer and a gamer playing games for nearly 30 years by now and i just cant look over these things.

sure there are good things too. i like that they wanted to make station walk, i like that they are improving it (i loved the labs, manufacturing lines, energy centers i have found on the stations) but all the interiors are ugly and the fp movement is silly, its hard to enjoy things if my immersion is being broke again and again. ehhh. if ego will work the same much they did with x3 and they keep what they have promissed, well, in 5 years more working might make this game really nice but not any soon as i can see it. and im here, im coming back because i still want it to be good and i still want to buy it but im decided a while ago that i dont support any devs who does a crap job. i just cant accept any excuses for that...

The gravidar has two display options, you can witch between a gravidar which follows the ship rotation (like a static linked camera behind the ship) and one which just looks down on you like you do on google maps.

Shift+m to switch between the displaymodes.

Personally find it more helpful that way than if it was fixed to the ship. In essence it works much like the old Ecliptic Projector from X2 (something I really missed in X3). Makes it easy to orientate my ship relative to the ecliptic plane & also judge turns - IMO if the grid was fixed to the ship it wouldn't be nearly so useful.

yep but the X3 gravidar was clear, this one isnt. when the plane is rotating it catches the eye more than the important information, the other crafts around and also you cant see where the other crafts are compared to the plane you can see. you can just guess now

Well, each to their own, but I definitely prefer the one in XR. Personally don't need a grid fixed to the ship to work out where another ship is relative to me - much more useful to use the grid itself as an indication of my ship's orientation in space. Also love the way that nearby ships & stations are shown on the gravidar, not just a tiny icon as in X3, but a detailed depiction of the station or ship itself (find that aspect particularly useful when dogfighting in close proximity to stations). For me XR's gravidar is by far the best there's ever been in an X game.

I enjoyed the free weekend. As a fan of the X universe since X2, I am always excited when a new X game comes out. I haven't bought Rebirth yet, even with the excellent price. I put in about 20+ hours this weekend, and enjoyed it, but I'm in no rush to buy the game right now. Lots of other things going on not video game related that take up more of my time than usual right now. If I see it in a few more months at the same price point, I may pick it up. There are still some things I am just not a fan of, like the single ship, the drones, the menu system and a few other gripes that I ran into during my limited time playing.

Though I am super excited about the Steam workshop. I grabbed 4 or 5 mods this weekend to fix little things that I would like to see changed, and they made a huge difference.

What I would love to see in the future, is egosoft looking at those mods, seeing which ones are super popular, and incorporating those somehow into the game, so that way we don't have to worry if a mod is compatible with a new update to the game. I don't want to have to restart a game for a mod I love because it doesn't work with an old save game on a new updated version of rebirth.

There were some things I liked, some I didn't like, but I really like the effort egosoft has put into the game since it's rather rocky release. I'm glad I got to play it, this was my first time playing rebirth, thanks for the free weekend. You've got me really leaning towards purchasing this game when I have more time to play.

Thanks and keep up the hard work!
