Is there something i should know about X3TC & win 8.1

In win 8.1 I tried to install x3 terran conflict and all I got was a error saying something about this game not having permission to play.
so I tried installing X3 reunion which left my screen blank, and screwed up the windows 8.1 boot-up sequence, leaving me with a long roll-back session every time I boot-up. I am not about to reload win8 plus the add-on's then load win8.1 plus all it's add-on's. So now I am using win 10 beta. One of the game required an older C++ version, so I am left wondering if this is what has screwed it all up.

The copy protection systems used by X3R and X3TC are not compatible with newer operating systems (Windows Vista and newer). To play X3R and X3TC on these Operating systems, you install the games as usual, but before starting them for the first time you have to update both games to their latest version (easiest way to do so are the complete patches: 1.0 -> 2.5 for X3R and 1.0 -> 3.2 for X3TC). That will prevent the copy protection driver from being installed at all.
