The new info about 3.0 says " All your ships that are not currently assigned to a superior (e.g: They are working for a manager to supply a station or are part of a squad protecting another ship), will now be selectable in the TRADE MENU. "
However when I do 'shift T' to get the trade menu all I get are the ships that are in my squad!
What am I doing wrong?

I believe there's now a setting in the game options to choose whether the menu shows your squad ships or all trading ships.

There is, though I thought the default was to show all such ships. So, either John has managed to set this accidentally or something isn't right. Regardless, check for the setting and see if you can toggle it John. Non-squad trading is so very useful!

I have checked the options settings in my game and it is set to show all ships, but when I do shift T to show sales and offers I can only see ships in my squad. Am I missing something?

Add all ships to squad then take them out of squad and check with shift-t again, see it that helps. Not sure if warships will be shown when out of squad as it may only apply to ships able to trade.

Maybe I have misunderstood, is it supposed to show ships that are assigned to station managers when I do 'shift T', or only ships that are free, in or out of squad?

Only ships that are free in or out of squad. So ships assigned to your managers or stations or defence officers will not show up.
