Hi Thrangar Smile
There's some considerable confusion and disappointment that in the recent newsletter David Braben states that ...(edited) quote..."A fully offline experience would be unacceptably limited and static compared to the dynamic, ever unfolding experience we are delivering".
Sadly, only SPG2 and XR "Teladi Outpost" remaining to spend my time among stars on Christmass.
I was hoping ED was the good game it looked but sadly, seems it turned into David Braben's retirement plan. Luckily for me I haven't spend a single penny on it so I will not be entangled into the refunds and more than likely lawsuit actions that will be enforced by UK consummer laws. If you checked the reaction on their forums it was more than "stronger than expected"... They had to split the thread as in 4 days it reached the 10k replies limit. The flaws are so many that hurts:
- Online DRM. They have tried to twist the reassons left and right but if you pay attention to the multiple quotes (in particular they late claim as how "low" is network traffic in single mode) and how this is just following some recent games trend, the main goal is not support "player experience", see below why.
- Potentially growing "store only" content not clearly defined.
- Couple both above and you know why they need online DRM to enforce that store content is ALWAYS paid to be available -> F2P model to pay the "expenses" of those "servers needed to support player experience". The follow up question is pretty obvious, why is this so important if they are just cosmetical effects? Occam FTW... Because they have plans for desireable items that will have an impact in gameplay. It doesn't require too much to realize which ones they may be... Store Only ships.
- He basically put ED in straight and direct competition (By filtering out old timers wanting a modern Elite experience... Which has ALWAYS BEEN SINGLE PLAYER) with the playerbase SC has been aiming to from moment zero... Stupid movement to put all your eggs in the same basket... Already hold by a giant enjoying 20 times your budget.
So to be short, Mr Braben played the nostalgy card on kickstarter, got the money, lured hyped players into one of the most expensive beta programs ever, and then greed makes him to toss away initial backers looking for that "proverbial new type of player" (That's already attracted by another product)... I don't know but sounds familiar, don't you think?
So with all the pain of seeing a classic spoiled by a stupid bussiness model, I will just sit here waiting for a FULL offline support (or for "other" ways to get it... If you know what I mean).
Probably I will have to wait a bit for it to be released, as first the following list of things need to happen:
- Week long waits when online servers get overloaded on the launch week.
- Intermitent server shortages triggering progress loss, something any Elite player always "loved"... The equivalent to the "savegame corruption" back in the day.
- Star Citizen launch luring away a sizeable portion of ED playerbase (The one he seems to only bother about) that simply bought it because if was launched 1st.
Some of us waited years to see a followup of the Elite series... I think we can afford waiting a bit longer so Mr Braben learns the hard way what other had already (Check Simcity Online, as the most recent example)... If you call your Community for backup and later you try to steer way from it because you see the opportunity to increase earnings... Expect a backlash.
