Can anyone at Egosoft explain X:Rebirth's low fps?

I haven't been able to find any post explaining the reason for the low fps in X:Rebirth even in high end rigs.

Wavy Haze, for example, is a special fps killing area, I get 20 fps average regardless of graphics settings when I enter that system.
Under graphics settings I disable all effects, move every slider to the left (0 value) and reduce resolution to the minimum... Guess what? Fps stay exactly the same, LOL.

So you would think that the cpu is bottlenecking, but I'm running a still powerful i7 2600k oc to 4,3GHz, and when I monitor X:Rebirth using Afterburner+Rivatuner Statistics Server, no core is working past 50%...my gpu stays under 60% load.


Specs:

cpu> i7 2600k (oc 4,3GHz)
gpu> Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X OC 4GB
ram> 16GB (4x4)
SSD> Both windows and X:Rebirth run in SSD (Samsung 840 EVO & OCZ Vector), AHCI enabled.
PSU>Nox Urano VX 750W
OS> Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

My guess:

X:Rebirth is unable to take full advantage of my rig.

Am I wrong?

Have you tried rolling back your AMD driver in case it is an issue with the newer AMD Catalysts? See this thread.

To help you further we really need the full DxDiag and whether you are using a Beta or a modded game rather than the release version.

Hi Alan, thanks for your reply.

I've been without internet access for the last 2 weeks (some technician working for another ISP plugged the line cable to my home in the wrong place...they couldn't figure this out until today, two weeks later...no comments), so I haven't been able to reply earlier.

Regarding AMD drivers, you can probably remove them from the list of suspects, I used to play X:Rebirth with my old GTX560Ti and I experienced the same thing, in fact, I didn't notice much fps increase when I upgraded my gpu, which means that X:Rebirth isn't taking much advantage of my gpu.
As I said, my i7 2600k should be able to handle X:Rebirth without problems, the computing power is there, but the game doesn't use it.

You can update your graphics driver from that beta non-WHQL one to the newer Catalyst 14.9 WHQL release version.

You can update your quite old RealTek sound driver to the 2014 HD Audio Codec R2.75 from the RealTek site and also you should disable the AMD *sound* device and driver if you are not using it.

Personally, I would get rid of the Ffdshow and Xiph.Org codecs by uninstalling whatever media application or codec pack installed them.

Thanks again for your fast reply.

I'm running all sorts of games based on DirectX9/DirectX11 at ultra settings and I get high fps, regardless of Catalyst or dated audio drivers...
X:Rebirth is based on DirectX9 and it pushes it too far due to all the stuff that needs to be loaded and calculated. DirectX9 is not suitable for a game like X:Rebirth, it should be based on DirectX11, that way the game would take advantage of powerful gpus and good multicore cpus.
That trend of blaming the drivers for the low performance of a single game got old ages ago, :wink:

There was a problem with X:Rebirth before patch 2.50, the game became saturated in busy sectors like Wavy Haze (15-20fps, which is ridiculous), that's what was happening, it had nothing to do with drivers, it had to do with the game itself.
I don't know what Egosoft did in version 2.50, but this problem seems to be finally solved, at last. I got the update earlier today and it seems to have done the trick. X:Rebirth is finally running at 60+ fps in places like Wavy Haze.
