Buying now - playing on GNU/Linux later?

Post by Vampyr »

Hello,
if I buy the game now (Windows version, maybe Collectors edition), will I be able to play it on a GNU/Linux system later when it will finally be released?
Or will it be a separate sold application and so I should not buy it now (because I want to play it only on GNU/Linux, my main system)?

Currently it seems that the main work in developing is still done in bug fixing the Windows version but is there a rough estimate when the GNU/Linux version could be developed/released? Or will other functionalities for the Windows version be higher prioritised? (I think the 64bit executable and the steam workshop are things that are important for the game and the GNU/Linux version will benefit from them too)

i am not completely sure, but i think i read that EGO will make their own Linux implementation and you wont have to buy it twice.

regarding Progress on that i think it depends how far EGOs port of the previous Games is (they hired a Linux Programmer some years ago and began porting their Games beginning with either X2 or X3R, and continuing chronologically) - currently he is afaik in the process of porting TC/AP, but not really sure about that since i am not keeping track on that.

PS what is your Distri? ^^ i am currently here with Archlinux ;)

EDIT: it was timon37 if you want a Name ;)
if not stated otherwise everything i post is licensed under WTFPL

Ich mache keine S&M-Auftragsarbeiten, aber wenn es fragen gibt wie man etwas umsetzen kann helfe ich gerne weiter ;)

I wont do Script&Mod Request work, but if there are questions how to do something i will GLaDly help ;)

I am sure there will be an Linux version. I personally think that the xbox controller support had nothing to do at all with that mythic supposedly "xbox" development for this game, but al LOT more with support for the upcoming Steam console.

Let's face it. If the Steam console succeeds, it could be an big boost for X Rebirth. Because the steam controller has a big similarity with the xbox controller it is not that strange that X Rebirth is developed with an controller in mind.

Anyway - as Steam OS is Debian based (an distro that I use a lot), I think the question is not IF there will be an Linux port, but WHEN that will be.

Oh - and I used a lot of distro's. I started in the early days with SuSE, Mandrake and Red Hat. Now I use mostly Debian, but I also have started an pet project with Linux From Scratch (LFS) about an year ago. I still maintain that "distro" and have the latest KDE running on it. It's fun and educational at the same time ;-).

They said yes or suggested it, but that was prior to release.

I believe they all are focused on fixing Rebirth and when it is decently playable for most they may focus on porting. Timon did a great job with reunion, TC and AP in no time so I bet there shouldn't be much difference with Rebirth when he can.

But fixing the game now comes first for sure.

Thanks for your posts but it were not the exact answers I hoped to read.
I asked not IF there will be a GNU/Linux distribution but if the current available versions (that have to be activated on steam?) will work with/get support for GNU/Linux systems.
I remember a statement from egosoft (I think) that you have to buy a GNU/Linux version even if you already own a Windows copy (I don't know if it was for X² or X³).
But that was the pre-steam era.
Last year I bought the steam versions of X²+X³ and they are installable and playable on both - Windows and GNU/Linux.
So my real question was, if I can assume that the X:Rebirth version will work on GNU/Linux some time in the future without the need to buy the game twice (now for Windows and then for GNU/Linux).
PS what is your Distri? ^^ i am currently here with Archlinux Wink
I am using archlinux too.

Given the continuing performance issues and memory leaks under Windows, I wouldn't expect it to work well, or indeed at all under wine. Soon(tm) where of course the definition of soon is no less than 1 working week and no more then from here till the sun burns out :P

That was some time ago, when ports of our games were developed by third parties. Since we moved the porting process in-house, we have been following the SteamPlay principle which means that if you buy one of our games then you can play it on all supported platforms. It's highly unlikely that this policy will change in the foreseeable future, so as and when create Linux/Mac versions of XR, anyone who has bought the game for Windows should be able to play it on the platform of their choice.

Honestly, save your money. The game is still unplayable because of many critical bugs in trading, AI and performance.
Save the money or come back in 6-12month.
I regret spending $50 on a game in this alpha state..
