The first part of chapter 2 is very interesting in showing how the skunk is ugly and tiny...

Just watched that second video and where I thought walking around and talking were just pointless gimmicks, it turns out they're really obnoxious tedium. So waiting for a capital ship to turn is totally lame and boring, but waiting for some random NPC to drop some random line before we can see his stats is exciting? It's extremely rare that I am actually baffled by something, but this just takes the cake. WTF were they thinking?!

Come on guys, why can't you give the developers an even break?

Interviewer: Welcome back ( etc etc )

00:25

Interviwer: so, we're going to do something we haven't been able to do before in the x series, dock up and walk aboard a station. ( bernd explains the controls, that he needs the interact menu )

00:50 Bernd: The copilot will take over the wheel and dock the ship up for you. You can start walking around. You can see the back of the ship here, you can even walk around here when you're in space. here's the ramp downstairs to the hangars. You can get a pretty look of the exterior of your ship here. through the halls and this passage..

1:16 Interviewer: The ship looks really big from here.

Bernd: yeah it's bigger then the ships one sees in the mass traffic. But it's also a lot smaller than capital ships. If the ships was in one of the past games, it would be classified somewhere between M3 and M6. Those where pretty big categories we used in our old X-games.

1:35 Interviewer: Do these categories still exist?

Bernd: Not in their old form. It was a bit awkard. The numbers could get quite confusing. Par example the M3 was a smaller then an M6 ship, but the M6 in turn was smaller then an M2, so there wasn't much logic.

Interviewer: yeah, they got added from series to series right? Shoved in between the other models ( bernd: Exactly! there was simply no more space with the numbers ) Over there in the distance ( 2:07 ) we can see someone who looks like he is pretty high rank!

Bernd: yes, that is a captain. When you get close to him you can see that you could potentially hire him. That's something you only really need when your game has advanced a little, like when you have a big fleet or a lot of stations where you can employ these people.

Interviewer: I'm going to take a look at this skills, oh, I can't see them!

Bernd: Exactly, thats one of the gameplay elements on these stations. To find out how good these people actually are before you hire them. You can find this out through a minigame we call "small talk".

Interviewer: Can I do that right now or do I not have the neccesary skills or something?

Bernd: You could potentially do it but the trick is is that he must be the one who wants to do it. You can't do it all the time, you can't initiate this small talk. You have to wait for someone to make a remark about someone before you can talk to them about said person, and even influence them with your charms. ( 3:08 ) you need to go to the side there, there is a button you need to press to open the door.

Interviewer: So, I am assuming it depends on what reputation the player has? With the factions and stuff?

Bernd: That is correct. there are different.... that's another captain, a similair dude like the one before. but if you go downstairs...

Interviewer: I can't afford that anyway.

Bernd: go in the bar itself, there should be some more in a tighter space and more likely one that...

3:38 Interviewer: who is she?

Bernd: That is a trader and... Arms dealer. that is...

Interviewer: So I can buy weapons here?

Bernd: Exactly. you can..

Interviewer: Are those weapons for me? Or for other ships I could perhaps have?

Bernd: Those are rockets you could also carry on your own ship. You can buy them or sell them. This aspect of trading is what we call item trading. Because, well in size these are things you could carry on your personal ship, or even on your person. ( 4:09 ) there are people here that are traders. They will often sell you rockets, or drugs. But sometimes they will also buy... things.. that you found. Par example if you open up a container you find on a station, or find a crate in space from a ship you destroyed, you can find items and sell them to these kind of people. But this is all disconnected from the large scale trade.

4:35 There appears to be some sort of manager here. I'm guessing she is somehow involved with large scale trading?

Bernd: Yes she could be one of your employees at your own station. But she's unique in that you need only one for an entire station, so when you want to start constructing a statione... well, the build has to start first ofcourse. The architect, that we may find around here. They are the ones that know how to build a station so once you order them to do so they will get to work and start building but at some point they're gonna say "we're done building, we need a manager to take over from us." and it's very important that you pick a good one. And this way, NPC's take over the micro management aspect from you. And this way, you command an ever growing empire. You deploy people as pilots, as managers, as engineers who repair your damaged ships, as specialists who optimize your factory results. But those are aspects of advanced levels of play. But everyhting is organised by people.

5:45 Interviewer:

We talked about how big and important stations are.. Wait, is there something burning over there? In the distance? Is there a fire? What's going on? I'm going to take a look. Because these factories exist out of small individual components, that's burning right!?

Bernd: Yeah, but that's normal here. If you fly a little further you can see that ore is being melted here. You can take a detailed look here at how the production line functions, and they're getting smelted over there. This is a Foundry. Ore gets processed into resources here, and you can really see from the outside of the station how the process functions. Like you can see what gets build here, and if the process is running or not. If the proces wouldn't be running then there would be no ore on the conveyor belt and the flame would be off. That was a big target for us, details. So that trade doesn't just happen in menus but you can see its effect around you in the world.

6:48 interviewer: We're at an info point here. This segment of the factory also lighted up for us, shortly. ehm.. one moment..

Bernd: you can see on the monitor below that this is the Zoltek Bridge - Metalworks Yard I. That's the module, this only single station. And you can see you unlocked it 100%. If you would get a bit further away from the station.. you can leave the menu by pressing B. Yes now look away from the factory. Yes now you can see your unlock rate for the entire factory complex. You can see that the metalworks yard is only unlocked until 27% but if you find more infopoints they will add up to your unlock level. A lot of the time, you will get a lot of infopoints at once. Par example from computer data leaks or perhaps your co-pilot can hack into some details for you. Or perhaps you find a lot of things at once. If you fly around the station you should probably try to find these unidentified info points. This way you unlock new stuff. One advantage is that you gain more knowledge about stations, the other side is ofcourse that you earn more discounts. Discounts are more important to large scale trading.

8:20 Interviewer:

Let's take a quick look.. eh.. I can't get rid of this menu? I wanted to see the sector map. ( bernd explains, he then explains how to find yourself on map )

9:00 bernd: You can see that some of the station menus are colapsed and some are not. The metalworks here is unfolded at the moment here. the - symbol gives it away. And the steel refinery.. now you have a good overview of the zones. a zone comprises several stations + ships. The ships don't get all show up though. If you click on that HDA Symbol. Excuse me I ment HOA, thats Heart of Albion, one of the ingame factions. You can see that he is in a fleet and that there are several ships belonging to that fleet. This is just a small group but it could be many ships. Par example with capital ships it could be large amounts of small escorts. But they won't clog your screen here, you need to unfold the menu to view them all. If you unfold a station you can see that station's build tree. Par example the Steel refinery over there. You can see the components in unique colours here. The components all have their own function, Par example the conveyor belt we just saw that melted ore. It could also be perhaps a warehouse. or a military structure that defends the station.

10:26 Par example the military buildings won't give you 100% of their info points the first time. They have missions or activities that you need to perform in order to unlock the full 100%.

10:36 that's a lot of depth! a lot of people have expressed concerns like "hmmm reboot that will probably dumb down the game and make things less complex or varied". That doesn't seem to be the case at all. I'm going to enter scan modus now. Let's take a look at how big the place is. I really understand now how important all these components of the factory are and how they all play their part. Par example you could make very targetted sabotage attacks on a place like this. to sabotage your competition. Perhaps I could send a combat ship here, or even do it myself.

Bernd: That would be a possibility, albeit a very dangerous one. You could start shooting up the place, only to find out that this place has a goddamn large amount of turrets. Attacking the station in this sitution would be suicide. The station has hundreds of turrets wich will all proceed to engage you, at least after a short warning period. Also the police ships that we've seen before will try to hunt you down.

But saboting these modules could also be attempted a little bit more covert. Par example with the assistance from a hacker drone, one could try to turn off the electricity so that you can shut the plant down, although only for a short period of time. But you will be taught how to do such things in missions.

12:28 interviewer: yeah we would probably be killed. Do we actually have a drone with us? a small one? ( bernd explains the controls )

12:58

Bernd: you now have virtual reality control over your drone and acces the infopoints that are not so easily accesible.

Interviewer: Do I have to fly it back to the ship?

Bernd: No when you press B you will leave the VR console, the drone will try go get back on its own provided it's not stuck or something. You can also use drones without directly controlling them. Par example you can use the emergency button, if you would like to press X again, go to the drone menu. ( 13:37 ) See the red button there? thats the emergency button. "smart defense" then all the drones you have will be deployed and they will defend your ship. you can also assign soft targets to your drones. So you don't have to manually fly them, you simply find a target in the distance and tell your drones "there's a target over there, deal with it." and the drone will engage that target autonomously.

14:00 interviewer: Like you said. you will learn this piece by piece in the plot campaign. I hope so atleast. ( bernd: yeah ) how this all functions and stuff. We will find out for sure on November 15th! this episode is now over. I think this will suffice for now, flying around the station. For the next episode we hope you would like to answer some questions that pour in through our facebook channel. Perhaps also grant us a better look at the combat, that's also an important part. I hope we could also take a look at another sector as well. < towards the camera > We'll see each other again for the third episode for X: rebirth!

On that point I must say you are right, ego has nothing to do with the subs or not of that video.

So hacker drones sound cool! Hack off part of a station and disable its defenses while it's down? Subterfuge!

These are small, local ships. local traders and civilians. Did you ever play the old X games? Do you remember the civilian ships? smaller then a M5 I even believe These ar the equivalent of them. The traders intended for mass trading and militairy vessels will be much more awe inspiring.

He actually said spacebar

The Ancients? They are in the game? So I won't be able to pretend that they don't exists? Meh.

Thanks for the translation!
Yes, one could also translate "Das alten folks" as the "ancients". I never heard about them in my X adventures but I didn't play much plot

To all of you who are contemplating wether or not we'll actually controll capital ships. This is what Bernd says during the first video, from 3:20 onwarts:

"Und doch kan Man gleichzeitig große Kapitellships, also Schiffe von viele hunderte Meter, oder Kilometer, besitzen und auch steuern. Nur eben nicht aus den Cockpitt Perspektive.

The word I am tripping over in this sentence is steuern. You can translate the word steuern with the following english words:

- Control
- Manage
- Steer
- Head ( as in a form of leading )
- drive
- navigate
- sail
- govern
- pilot
- run
- con
- be at the wheel/the controls/ the helm

The translation of the sentence is " and at the same time, players can own large capital ships, ships measuring in size of several hundreds of metres, even kilometres. You can own these, but also control ( steuern ) them. Just not from a cockpit perspective.

Actually, they were normal M5's, M4's, M3's, TS's and TP's. Only the sector map icon was smaller.

And thanks for the excellent translation. :)

What I've taken from it - aside from a general jaw dropping wow - is:

- How much depth there is in man management with a view to creating your personal empire / trading operation.

- The tactile completeness of the economy, being able to actually see the asteroids, become ore, become goods and getting shipped around the universe - to the level of seeing practically each rock.

- The amount of discovery there is, unlocking station info, befriending NPCs through reputation, exploring items within stations and finding resources in space.

- Was happy from an immersive perspective that you could see the ship being lifted clear of the station as you entered the cockpit. Don't know what that mattered to me, but there you go.

- How full of life & robotics the stations were. Was it just me or are the NPCs looking better?

- The opportunity to affect the economy, the hacking drones sound amazing.

Ok, I'll stop because I'm waxing lyrical but I'm quite astounded by the level of depth :-)

I am overwhelmed with a desire to drive one of those little police cruisers. Maybe in the sequel. :D

I'm happy we're seeing a little more foot traffic inside the stations now... the cleaning robots were pretty nifty. I'm expecting a mod to come down the pipe that increases the amount of superfluous foot traffic. ^^

Really reassuring. Devs really got the point there, telling we usually fly only one ship.
Indeed, personally I was 95% time in a M6 which I found a bit slow (not talking about Vidar  ) but strong-shielded and well armed. And a M3 was in my opinion a bit too weak.
So something between M6 and M3 ? You made my day !

One thing I am noticing about the videos and I really hope this isn't too obvious is the fact that most if not all the other ships are flying around in an orderly fashion. Even in queues going very slowly. And here you are in the skunk flying around wherever you want with absolute freedom not in any sort of queue not following any sort of pattern.

For me personally this is something that breaks immersion completely. When NPC ships and player ship(s) have different sets of rules or behaviours. Where all the NPC's are following very obvious rulesets and flight patterns, yet the player ship can fly anywhere and do anything.

I am hoping it is just a matter of me not having seen many non-civilian ships?
