HIGHLY UNLIKELY THOUGH
Correction: some Terraformer CPU ships are sentient and want peace. That's the distinction between Terraformers and Xenon: the one is sentient and sane, the other is sentient and omnicidal.
Terraformers == Xenon. It's a different name for the same thing. The difference you probably mean is between the remains from Aldrin and the "usual ones".
Don't forget #efaa, which seems to be somewhere between them.
Also, even then it depends on the source material. According to the (mostly German) books, several Xenon CPU ships have gained sentience.
Not disputing some of the Xenon CPU ships are sentient, just that they're sentient and sane. Though, there is that weird bit in Farnham's Legend where the Split patriarch gets a communique from the Xenon...

Can I still play with just mouse and keyboard or will I have to buy a game pad?

There will be a video showing mouse and keyboard controls, so yes, mouse and keyboard will be supported, joystick as well.

ThommoHawk wrote:So if I read the minimum/recommended specs correctly my PC is well above those specs (subject to change etc...). :)

But it begs the question: is X Rebirth in 64_bit native code?

Steam says minimum and recommended requirements in all Win OS's from WinXP to Win8 state 64 bit only. In which case this is an awesome step and again, congratulations to Ego.

Also thank goodness it is confirmed that joystick control will continue to be supported. I am happy that the gamepad is now supported, and good for players who prefer it, but I feel more like a pilot when I'm using a flight control stick.

Other Comments:

1) I think this game will get some space MMO fans back to enjoy single player mode.

2) I hope that the irritating music during the demo Bernd was showing us is not typical of the in-game background music, because if it is I will be be wanting to learn how to change/mod get rid of asap.

3) still have my fingers crossed that the ship computer/pilot/betty VOICE will have a quality that does not grate on the nerves (because I suspect it is the main pilot/ship computer interface and it will be a constant, permanent and indispensable part of the X-Rebirth-Universe).

Summary: MORE I SEE, MORE I WANT.

which video are you talking about with the irritating music? the X rebirth controls or the scale and detail video?? because the first one...that music sounds really goood!

Looks like it's been worth the wait, great trailer & good follow up on the detailed videos by Bernd. Well done Egosoft !

Wonder if there's going to be a demo / benchmark exe released, like in previous X game versions.

Particularly wonder if it would be steam-free, so that steam dissenters (like me) can see the whole effect & maybe be convinced to come across to the darkside :P

main reason for high spec will be not fancy effects but the sheer amount of polys on screen as the draw distances will be quite large!
I used to list PC parts here, but "the best" will suffice!

Before anyone gets too excited has anyone taken a step back and asked themselves WHY a game of this structure and development type requires computer specs higher than the last Crysis or Rome TW 2?

No one gonna ask how this game magically became 64bit over night? or why the 500 series graphics cards with 1gb requirement on a clearly 9.0c platform?

Ok then, I guess you all can go back to your jubilee.

The 'controls' music iirc, and I acknowledge that it is goood.

what I meant by 'irritating':

When spending hundreds of hours in a game - sometimes dozens of hours in just one sector doing stuff (X games can be like that), background music for me becomes 'less is more ... better' sort of thing, and just turning off the music often means losing a lot of ambience in the soundtrack too.

This is all I meant with it being irritating (potentially, for me). I am weary of music's potential to sound good the first time, but then being fatiguing when repeated over and over... great background music can repeat over without becoming an annoyance, and adds to atmosphere.

but yep I know i'm jumping the gun there as in 'wait till im playing it to comment any further'.

I'm pretty excited by all this so now I'm blabbing blblblblblbll

Egosoft and Tri Synergy

What does this mean? Why is a company I've never heard of, with a web site design dating to the early 80's, responsible for publishing to the NA market and not DeepSilver?

I admit, I'm ignorant to the responsibilities of such entities, but their role seems important.

No, I am sorry but I cannot just blindly be jubilant when just a few weeks ago representatives from Egosoft were arguing the virtues of making Rebirth available in DX9 and 32bit to reach as many potential gamers as possible, just to have it announced as a 64bit game a month later.

And I care, because if they have a serious issue with the game like a memory leak or redundant code and they are masking the issue with outrageous minimum specs I want to know that before I spend my money, and you should too.

Good for you, so why don't you sulk off and start your own thread about it? Pretty simple to do isn't it? That's all I'm gonna say to you about this.

I don't even remember them saying it'd be 32bit anywhere, and the minimum specs certainly aren't outrageous.

Considering the sheer scale of what we've been show so far, I'm not at all surprised by the increase in specs. The X3- economy is already very processor and memory-intensive, and what they're trying to do in rebirth is to simulate everything - with resources being mined by mining ships, and warships all being produced and armed from in-universe factories.

Naturally, all that is going to demand more computationally than its predecessors. You may have heard debates over whether it would be possible to run the game on 32 bit architecture, but evidently it's not.

I'm glad it's 64-bit. My modded Skyrim crashes every time it reaches 3GB of memory usage (even a Large Address Aware 32-bit program can only use 3GB). Modern graphics demand more memory, so next-gen games will be switching over to 64-bit. Get over it.

How funny  Ego-soft should hire you as some kind of entertainer with a clowns hat on during Gamescom, or selling candy and ice creams to people.
