Every time after going through warp gate in X3AP and X3TC I have this annoying glitch for all menus.

[X3AP linux] Graphical corruption of the UI after gate jump

Post by FuryFlex »

This is for X3AP English/Linux/Steam version 3.0.2013 build 1. This is a fresh install with no mods. The problem occurs with at least four different starts (all the ones I've tried).

After jumping through a gate, I usually get some severe graphical corruption of the UI. The game plays fine in this state, though it's annoying to deal with. It doesn't happen every jump, but I'd say more than half. Loading a game, for example docking then loading the autosave, fixes it until the next jump. It happens in fullscreen mode and windowed mode.

I'm running Ubuntu 13.04 on a Dell XPS Studio 13 (model 1340) laptop from 2009, with nvidia's 319.17 driver (although it happened with 304 as well). The laptop has an integrated nvidia 9400M G, and a discrete nvidia G210M, although it is my understanding that in Linux, the discrete card does nothing except drain battery, and the game is running on the 9400.

Screenshot:

Here's a save game, although I doubt it's useful--loading any save, including this one, fixes the glitch temporarily:

Played X3AP on Linux today for the first time. Nice work! Thanks a lot! Only had some minor glitches:

1. My Joystick (Thrustmaster T.16000M) was detected correctly and works fine, but I had to manually swap the sources 2+3 with the sources 4+5. The Joystick has JoyRudder=2 and JoyThrottle=3 but Sources 2+3 were configured as Joy2X and Joy2Y. But thanks to the great Controller Adjustment Tool this wasn't hard to fix.

2. The texts in-game were blurred. This is already mentioned as known issue. I fixed it by reducing Antialiasing from x16 to x8.

3. Also already mentioned a few posts ago: When scrolling through texts (The ware list of stations for example) then the frame per second counter text "fps xx" is appearing randomly in the displayed texts. That's actually quite annoying. I guess this is some bug in the "Hack FPS Replace Text" feature? This config option is set to 0 in my config.

My system:
Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS
Gnome Shell 3.4.1
NVidia GeForce GTX 660 with driver version 319.17
Intel Core i7 2.8 GHz
12 GB RAM

I have been playing TC for at least 32 hours almost continuously without any major issues. Purchased the TC/AP warpack on steam and decided to d/l TC first to start playing quick :)

I use Xubuntu 12.04 (64 bit) as base, but replaced xfce with e17 sometime ago; Nvidia GTX 460 1g with driver 310 from the repository (works fine with all games) with vsync forced in nvidia-settings, as i hate tearing; cpu is an I5 2500; 8g of ram.

Forgot to mention i don't use antialias, the only antialias i might be willing to use is FXAA because is nearly cpu/gpu free. If the game supported it the text could be spared from unnecessary blurring.

Started the game (TC) in window mode, works fine, sadly its just a few predefined window resolutions, but quitting the game and hand editing a text file cured that, so i could have a "maximized" window which doesn't cover my taskbar equivalent for easy app switching/browsing (the game doesn't let you re-size the window).

Very rarely i have noticed that "mouse pointer can't reach" (as if trapped in a smaller rectangle) situation, but its cured quickly by moving the cursor fully to all corners; i wonder what it is?

The game starts with the voice volume too low, which is bad for that opening video. Btw: recorded voices don't have the same volume, maybe you should consider applying replaygain (ie mp3gain/vorbisgain/wavgain) to all audio assets, including videos.

For a noob like me launching missiles wasn't very intuitive, keyboard is simply L, but with a joystick, you have to hold the secondary fire button, and only when you release it the missile launches. A simple push will _remove_ the missile from its slot. My joystick has throttle and rudder (main stick can be turned to sides) and it works fine for speed and rolling, also the hat moves the viewing angle and its nearby buttons to select next/previous targets, quite nice.

Joystick in question: Logitech Extreme 3D Pro.

Also, in this game you can't trust autopilot very much, its collision avoidance isn't flawless, even docking i once crashed because the autopilot did not do that final turn and head crashed against the arm that lowers above your ship... I also have crashed against objects in space when in autopilot, things such as asteroids, large ships in the path that could have been avoided miles back, etc. Bah, screw dead is dead, autopilot has killed me more than any hostiles already ;).

Maybe add an achievement for autopilot kills for laughs?

I'm also seeing this on my notebook (nvidia Quadro FX 770M (very similar to Geforce 9600M)) in TC. It seems to randomly appear or disappear when going through a gate.
It happens in the menu and other parts of the UI. It seems as if everywhere, where text should be displayed, the background just is uninitialized memory.
I tried driver 313.30 and 319.17, no change. I have no longer seen it since I switched from texture quality low to texture quality high. All other graphics settings (except for memory) are at lowest (or disabled).
I also have seen a graphics bug when displaying Jupiter which disappeared after I switched from texture quality low to texture quality high.

I have a funny assumption:
is it possible, that this is related to the unity startbar?
Try to enable autohiding of that. Could be possible that this actually is hindering the zone of the game, where you can move the mouse to.
I've seen the same thing under KDE so it's not a unity thing. The fix for me is to just switch in and out of X3TC quickly (alt-tab or something).

Did you try without compositing? Ie. the Unredirect fullscreen option (using full screen) or temporarily using a desktop without compositing (such as openbox) to launch the game?

I've played at texture quality medium and I confirm that after switching to high quality this doesn't happen anymore.

Anyway I didn't notice difference in performance so I will just stay with this settings.

Hello,

I don't know how Ubuntu's Unity handles this but in Gnome Shell the X3 Albion Prelude application isn't connected properly to the desktop file which starts the application.

When starting X3AP then the config dialog is displayed first which has a WM_CLASS of "X3AP_config". Gnome Shell is not able to connect this name to the X3AP desktop file so it can't display the correct icon and correct name in the top bar. See this screenshot:

http://ailis.de/~k/permdata/20130521/x3/1.jpeg

The same happens with the game itself:

http://ailis.de/~k/permdata/20130521/x3/2.jpeg

The same problem in the Dash. The icon is not displayed and it is not possible to pin the application to the dash because Gnome Shell has no idea how to start this application (Because it is not connected to the desktop file):

http://ailis.de/~k/permdata/20130521/x3/3.jpeg

Normally this connection between the application and the desktop file is simply the executable which is executed. In some cases this can't work (When the executable is Java for example or (like in this case) Steam). But there is a second way to create this connection: The WM_CLASS property of the window.
I'm not that familiar with X11 programming so I don't know the exact mechanics behind this window matching stuff. As far as I know the WM_CLASS must match the lower-case name of the desktop file. And whitespaces in the name seems to be problematic. So if you give the application the WM_CLASS "x3ap" and name the desktop file "x3ap.desktop" then it works.

Currently the config program has the WM_CLASS "X3AP_config" and the game itself has "X3AP_main". I was able to map at least the game itself to the correct desktop file by renming the "X3 Albion Prelude.desktop" file to "x3ap_main.desktop". Now the icon and title is displayed correctly in the top bar and in the dash and I'm able to pin X3AP to the dash.

Would be nice if this could be fixed in a more appropriate way. Maybe as suggested above by setting the WM_CLASS to "x3ap" (In the game window AND the config window) and renaming the desktop file to "x3ap.desktop".

Build 2 of AP fixed the frames per second counter showing up in the trade and stock exchange menus. Great work :)

That is very minor, but i have the same: no app icon in the panel (tasks?) when the game is running (E17 here).

The menu glitch also appeared at least once with texture quality high, but it seems to be much less likely to happen.

I haven't experienced the menu glitch or the Jupiter problem with texture quality low since Build 11 for TC was released yesterday. It seems to be fixed or at least the chance of it happening was greatly reduced.

I'm trying to launch X3AP from terminal on Fedora 18 : it run but the application don't grab the mouse... unable to click anywhere pointer stay on the left screen and some time go center.

Launching from Steam mice work without problem.

I was also able to work around this in Build 1 by choosing high texture detail, and in Build 2 it doesn't happen at all for me (I'm running low now, since my laptop's video isn't too beefy).

There still is a minor menu glitch present in Build 11 with low texture quality. It was also present in Build 10 with high texture quality. It is really seldom, only noticed it once every few hours.

First off, and above all else, thank you for supporting a Linux build of these games. Devs like you guys give me high hopes for the future!

Now to my issue. I have no problems running vanilla X3AP on Linux. I mean zero. It's awesome.

However, a 3,0 specific build of the XRM mod has recently come out, and I figured I'd try installing it on the Linux build, since I almost exclusively played on it under Windows X3TC/AP. Everything seems to work great as far as I can tell, with two issues:

1) XRM adds a few custom start scenarios. A few of them have the pilot portraits turning into a random set of vertical color bars that change every time you select them. Example: http://i.imgur.com/MWvr4RB.jpg

2) Many of the custom starts, when I move the selector to them, crash the game instantly. No error message if launched from the console. Just BAM, crash to desktop. Every other start I've tried so far works flawlessly.

I had a few posts in the XRM release thread, and the dev is looking into it as far as he can (nobody else there seems to run Linux), but I have been asked to also post here in case it is something related to the Linux port as well. I understand if you can't really do much past the vanilla port, just mentioning it in hopes that I can narrow the issue down.

Thanks again!

So X3AP on linux via steam (ubuntu 12.04,) i have ran into a minor problem, I can not find the Commodity Logistics Software. I thought that script was included in the default installation but after loading an existing save (from windows) i have several ship with unknown commands and i can not find any mention of the ship upgrade in the in game encyclopedia.

As it turns out that script is not a part of the default X3TC/AP installation and thus it should not work... so on linux I download the installer for the AP bonus pack, ran it via wine and pointed it to the steam install directory. after restarting the game everything work as expected.

For point 1 : Every time selecting custom start with striped image have this error :

Code: Select all

======================================
Error. Tried to alloc 0 bytes.
======================================

For point 2 : Encounter the same crash when selecting game start with XRM but have this error :

Code: Select all

WARNING: OpenGL Unsupported DXT level used, skipping texture l\true\startJS (fourcc = 1701536609)...
launch_xrm.sh : ligne 79 : 24509 Abandon (core dumped)./X3AP_config
Where can be find the dumped core to provide it ?

Also anyone have an idea to fix the mousse problem I've reported up ?

Hmm...so this is looking like some kind of OpenGL compression issue with portraits? Time for some Google-powered research...

Also, I cross-posted your errors in the XRM thread to add to the info there. Hope you don't mind.
