Let me take you to the other hugely anticipated game I bought: Sword of the Stars. this was an awesome empire-building, 4x space strategy game. It had so much to it, it was very well thought out and implemented.

So, when they announced SotS2, I was jumping for joy. And then they released it some time later (with not much of a delay to the official release date) I downloaded it and played it and ... along with everyone else, found it was a steaming pile even flies wouldn't go near. Get this, it was so bad, the publisher offered refunds!!!!!

Still, about a year of updates followed and its now sort-of playable. Not anywhere near as good as the original though (but it has better graphics, sigh).

So, lets assume Rebirth turned into the disaster wee have an idea it might be, that happens with rewrites of codebase more often than developers like to think. So, if that's happened, then it could be the massive delay is because they've re-started again, or decided to really rip it apart - which fills me with confidence that whatever they do eventually release will be really good. quality.

Lets hope that this is the case, of course it could be that they are working to a overly large requirement with too few people to take on the job.

I cannot believe that people that play games, still don't know the professional relationship, between a game development studio and a publisher. One makes the game, the other manages the rest. Why do you think Egosoft is being so anal about the latest videos being a "making of Rebirth". And, Oppps honest mistake, we didn't want to show the gravity well for capital ships. Those videos are rehearsed, edited and then green lighted by Deep Silver, we have those videos, because Egosoft wants you to have more information about the new game.

Devblogs are a marketing tool, they keep you interested in upcoming features, that are not guaranteed to make it into the game, and they serve as a "poll" to gauge how those features will be received and to get feedback on them. They are almost exclusive to MMOG and Kickstarter games, that is not the case with Rebirth

Loving other games at the moment so no problem here.
I said I'd be back in three months for a look - and this is just to prove I did.
Seems much the same going on as 90+ days ago.

Keep working chaps and chapesses. Looking forward to a great game some time in the future.

I am starting to think that some catastrophe occurred at egosoft, or they got close to the end and decided it was a steaming pile and had to start again. That's why they have been extremely light on details - because honestly, there is very little so far to show. I have been tracking this game for years as I have previously stated and as such egosoft SHOULD have been working on it for as long, by now they MUST have something to show - unless they don't.

This game draws an awful lot of parallels with another train wreck I observed many years ago called BREED - it was also full of promise, then full of delays, then full of shit, going down as one of the worst games every made.

I hope that didn't happen to XR.... But anything is possible

I think what happened to Ego they bite off more than they can chew....They took big project for their small crew and now they can't keep up and they need more time

And i'm not expert but creating new engine from start for sandbox game is nightmare....But I could be wrong

And i wish them good luck because if XR is not as good as we believe it is it might be end for Ego

Honestly if they need more help programming and writing stuff I would work for them in a heartbeat. I like this game. What does a developer at ego get as a range?

Personally I think the game is more or less complete. Egosoft are just waiting for DS to release their current batch of less-good-than-Rebirth games so they can start marketing for Rebirth.

Egosoft developers are way overpaid. Sometimes they are even let outside into the sun for 10 minutes.

BAH!!! Here we go again with people hiding behind that blasted legally binding contract/NDA. OH MY...HEAVEN FORBID EVEN EGOSOFT MENTIONS SOMETHING ABOUT THE GAME!!! Some competitor will SWOOP IN and take note of a tiny tidbit of information & put a game out with that tidbit of information before egosoft will.

*sigh* The same broken record that is playing about "When is the release date?" can be said about the NDA/legally binding contract.

i have just finised XBF & im stuck on the ship capture in X-tension Not a problem with the game but with my wrist can not take combat for that long anymore so i have started X2

I wouldn't make any long-term gaming plans centered on the Rebirth release.

Even if it gets released with like no warning (aka maybe 2 months from the announcement), I'm sure there will be one or two tiny issues left to fix after it enters the post-beta test. =)

No Long-term plans just having fun & I wanted to see the sights of the Old Universe before rebirth

The force of the fanboi's are strong in this thread. Nothing I have read here has actually refuted anything I have said, but then how could it? Noone knows anything. Which is the problem.

I still do not buy the "were bound by our contract" argument - that simply implies that you have a poor relationship with your distributor and that is a problem for egosoft corporate to solve, not to use as an excuse. It's the typical excuse from a failing game that I have seen before time and time again, and it does not wash with me.

Edition 50 of the newsletter also doesn't help with its, again, lack of information. That was huge missed opportunity, its very purpose is PR, are you telling me you couldn't pick up the phone and call whomever is responsible for having you hog-tied so and make your case? Unless again, there is nothing really to show?
